Road Rash and Apocalypse are the two that have best stood the test of time for me. If you'd have asked me back in 98, I'd have probably said FFVIII, Destruction Derby 2, Driver, Soul Blade, Metal Gear Solid, Jet Moto, 2, Silent Hill, Parasite Eve, Medal of Honor, and Resident Evil 1/2. All of which I still like, except for Jet Moto. Medal of Honor hasn't aged well, and FFVIII was more of an infatuation with Quisty (I knew a girl in HS who looked a bit like here that I really wanted to fuck).
I probably would have said Tomb Raider as well if I hadn't played anything past TR2, but after TR3 I was fatigued with the series and they just kept coming out.

Yep, just requires a successful disk swap and from there it's back up loading heaven. I'd recommend this as there isn't a good way to do it on the PS2 without chipping it. Sure this solves a number of problems but it's a fairly time consuming mod, and a $10 PS1 gameshark is hard to beat.

Isn't it just using a PS1 emulator and not the PS1 hardware built in? I was very disappointed when I found this out, the emulator seems OK but knowing it's not running on a system that is several orders of magnitude more powerful to produce accurate emulation makes me feel as though I'm getting the short end there.

I may be mistaken, so - what you're doing is using a slim PS2, have the open lid switch permanently recessed, and forcing the game to boot a burned PS1 disc with an .elf application, bypassing the typical copy protection?
I was confused because I use a fat PS2 for HDD loading thru OPL. This can't be used for PS1 games as the PS1 hardware can't recognize a hard drive, with the only way to play these games being through an emulator. Provided you're running a game off the disc it'll use the systems normal PS1 logic. What model slim do you have?

There's 2 of them, but also yes, I just used some electrical tape
>and forcing the game to boot a burned PS1 disc with an .elf application
pretty much. There's a method called the "swap trick" you can use on a slim where the system reads a real PS1 disc, & then you swap it for a fake while it's spinning. The elf file just forces the system to stop the disc for you so the swap is super easy to do.
>Provided you're running a game off the disc it'll use the systems normal PS1 logic
exactly. My model is an SCPH-70012
c53565 No.15217856

That's excellent. Unfortunately a PS2 slim wouldn't address my use for a PS2, the hard drive loading was a big perk for me. That's a great solution you're using. I'll have to stick with a PS1 with a gameshark but thanks for sharing, always helps to know this stuff in my field.
Also, I asked which model because the SCPH70000 (pre 75000) is a perfectly downsized PS2 fat with all the original PS1 hardware and none of the ASIC jank.

>a PS2 slim wouldn't address my use for a PS2
I have a fat PS2 also for the faster load times. Were there an easy way to load PS1 games on a hard drive for faster loads I'd be using it. I remember reading there was a way to do that, but it uses some sort of emulator so I doubt it would be a good idea.
Anyway, I have a slim PS2 for burned PS1 games, & a fat PS2 with a HDD for PS2 games. If there's a better setup I'm not aware of it. Ideally I'd have an original PS1 for that Sweet DAC for the better PS1 audio, but as we all know the lasers on those models go bad very easily. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love to hear what everyone's ideal PS1 setup is.
c53565 No.15217911

>Correct me if I'm wrong.
I've never seen that DAC meme substantiated, the best version of the PS1 is the scph-5500 to 7500 models as they have the improved GPU and retain the parallel port. The reason it's worth having a dedicated PS1 is despite the PS2 BC in a number of models being fantastic due to using real hardware, it can't do some very obscure things a real PS1 can - resulting in some games having issues or not working at all. For this reason I'd rather have a real PS1.
The lasers themselves also don't go bad (well, some do.), but rather get damaged due to their proximity to the power supply, warping the laser and its tray. This is why later models rotated the laser carriage to the opposite side of the system. It's also why a work around was to flip the system upside down.

examples? Is that tomb raider picture comparing PS1 vs. PS2, or different revisions of the playstation? And yes I'm aware some PS1 games just flat out won't work on a PS2 like Monkey Magic & Puzzle Fighter. If that's what you're getting at I understand.

> Is that tomb raider picture comparing PS1 vs. PS2
different revisions of PS1 which used different GPUs, scph-1000 vs 5500+

certain resolutions which results in some of those games you mentioned just not working. The PS1 has a few 480i modes, some of which are extremely obscure and otherwise do not work on the PS2 due to the way the emulation works unfortunately.

So here's a question, which model of the PS1 retains the parallel port so you can hack it to run burned games, while ALSO having the better GPU revision that removes the banding? That would theoretically be the perfect PS1 right?

I miss the cheery music from old games. More funky horns instead of heavy dance beats like modern cheery game music has. I like both but there's a strong quality to the former that is missing from the current generations. I really miss when a lot of developers were making those sort of action-adventure games which could accommodate a range of moods. Even retro throwback games made these days tend to be highly focused in a single genre, but many of the best games from back then often experimented with other genres just to see how they could apply existing mechanics to them or explore how characters might engage with them. Even the super focused ones like Sonic which is undeniably a platformer would happily become a pinball game just so you could engage with the physics in a new way.
