If your friend was smart enough, he could've set up several VMs with passthroughed cards to set up a one PC LAN party. He could've easily had 4 VMs with 4 cores each, plenty for gaming. Threadrippers have plenty of PCI lanes to handle 4 GPUs.
I can't see any other use, gaming wise. 4 core CPU are the optimal value, since FPS is almost equal to 6 core CPUs, but I wouldn't do anything else moderately intensive while gaming on a 4 core CPU. 6 core CPUs are the new 4 cores, tbh. People tend to forget that your computer runs multiple processes at once.
Even if the game doesn't take advantage of it, you may be running other shit like video capture/encoding, audio processing, voip, etc.
While some of these are not demanding, some are, and it's nice to have threads to throw away like that sometimes.
Really though, anything able to be parallelized highly would probably be done on the GPU anyway. Graphics are obviously there, some physics are offloaded there. There's not much a game itself could likely benefit from more threads vs more single core performance.

Since most games seem incapable of taking advantage of any more than 6 cores right now, it is like those extra cores don't exist and the cpu is (within the confines of the game being played) technically slower than a cheaper, less powerful cpu.
