Call of Chernobyl is a good starting point. From there you'll want to likely get Arsenal Overhaul to help with your weapons.
In general, find out which mods are known for compatibility with one another and stick with those.
I personally am playing The Last Day with a fair amount of mods. It runs very smoothly, though every now and again it crashes. (Usually I can figure out what is specifically causing it, likely the HD model mod I have)

For Call of Chernobyl there is a mod that adds in a few more mutants which does include a few more models but it also changes a few other stuff related to A-Life or to mutants only I am not sure. But yeah I agree with you it annoys me too that new mutants are a rare thing in mods and when it comes to weapons, certain "exotic" weapons such as anomaly, explosive ones or something else are awfully rare too, I think Stalkersoup is the only mod that adds another rocket launcher weapon which does not consist of a reskin. Also most weapon mods I see is were the Author of it is too busy adding 30+ different AK and M16 variants.

Dead Air's the main one, I think. It's essentially Call of Misery: Fuck You edition with no faction selection. I'm not even saying it's bad, though, just that so far as the level of oppression Misery tends to put on the player, I think Dead Air has further maximized on this.

damn, shitting my pants, got everything up and running, -noprefetch and some nvidia settings, runs butter smooth on ultra high. Only thing turned of is real shadow, laggy as hell.
sart on a random base, old ship wreck, not leaving the ship, too many strange beings lurking out there, immidiley get attack by a splitter group. Just three randos, get shot by the guards running around on the ship. I'm shitting my pants, i do not want to leave the boat, just lurking the area with my binoculars. A lot of shit happening out there and sometimes it is way to calm, almost as if there is nobody out there. Decided to leave the boat immiditley ends with a dead animal in front of the exist. Turn around, scan the field, see three dogs hidding behind the bushes. Nope.

Forget what >>15228343 said. We've been saying this on /sg/ for years: Play all the games in the release order so that you can build your preference more accurately. Each game has radically different approach in gameplay setting e.g. enemy spawns, map transition and object placements. You don't need to complete them, spend like 4 hours at max to see how each game compares. Also, in STALKER, just like many open world games, bigger map =! fun, as many activities in a map is centralised to few points and most other areas are empty swaths of land and buildings.

Someone in a previous Stalker thread suggested Radiophobia as a vanilla experience so I tried it. I feel like I've been rused. If that was your intent, good job, you got me good. What the fuck is with this mod? It goes beyond the retarded strawberry jam smear gimmick all of those garbage AAA military shooters have, whenever you take damage, your camera jerks around in random directions like you've just had a fucking seizure, and when you're at low health the whole fucking screen goes red, the edges of the screen are an extremely opaque red, and the rest of the screen is a very dark red overlay onto everything that makes it almost impossible to see. And as if that wasn't bad enough, it also gives you blurred shifting double vision for being damaged and then the whole screen starts fading in and out and flashing pitch black or bright white. I've never seen an FPS take the retarded red tint gimmick to such a ridiculous extreme. The prices of med kits are also jacked up massively, close to 4k for a single basic medkit, so early game is absolute hell. If I get hit once it's basically game over, just reload the last save, because I don't have enough money to heal myself and it's practically impossible to play if I've taken any damage since the flashing lights and double vision make it impossible to see shit and give me a headache.

I find it pretty easy. Just go to the great swamps asap, hunt some mutants with an axe(so you get maximum parts) and farm anomalies. Mutants also can't into water so even bloodsuckers become easy. Butcher, inventor and geologists are the only perks you need.
Mosin-nagant has cheap shit 3. tier ammo so you'll drop pretty much everyone at the start with one shot. If not through direct damage, bleeding will get them fast. Same with mutants.
Then you get 7.62x51 and even exos don't stand a chance.
Kar98 is the same but with a high tier silencer.

This was something I liked from the main games, especially clear sky, joining a faction over the course of the game after proving your worth to them was more interesting than picking it at character creation. But both methods have their own upsides, being able to start off as a faction member is nice too, and leaves options that wouldn't be possible by joining them mid-game, like Monolith.
