I've always been kinda amazed at how good the lighting on source can be. Especially with use of colors. Such as yellow tint to give things an uneasy feeling. For some reason, though, they added color correction which thankfully can be disabled.

Source engine doesn't have good lighting. vrad is nice looking when implemented well but it's a chore to tweak until it's ideal. It requires a ton of work to get effects or results other engines can do automatically.

a5392e No.15192378

I know source is really bad for generating lights, requiring invisible lightblocking textures to get effects desired. It also has really shit dynamic lights. This kinda forces the map makers to think more about how lighting is going to work since they have to fuck with it at such a rudimentary level. As a result source maps have some of the best lighting I've ever seen in games.

The lighting algorithm itself is really good to.

General Reminder that Ray tracing and Subsurface Scattering is the next thing Nvidia Is planning to ram down the Gaming industries Throat.

Just like they rammed over bloated Tessellation into every game they could.

Just like they rammed Hair Tessellation into every game they could.

Just Because their cards could run heavy tessellation slightly better than their competitor.

Now their next gen Cards have huge gains in Ray-Tracing and are already starting to implement SSS into Gameworks.

Get ready for all you polygons to be oiled up like hookers all the time so you can see those "Refections in Real Time!!!1111"

The two subjects don't blend as well as you think, especially since the technical-minded will always be more critical of what he doesn't see as the gold standard.

000000 No.15195395

Lighting doesn't really matter. Its importance has always felt inflated to me. I remember watching a review of God of War III before playing it. Above all else, the reviewer praised it for how well Santa Monica nailed the lighting and how, up to that point, Kratos had the pinnacle of realistic "human" 3d character models. I agreed with the 3d bit because Kratos' model truly was something back in 2010. But I could also care less about how supposedly "good" they nailed the lightning was. I played the game but the lighting didn't "wow" me at all.

And really, that has been my reaction to every game. No lighting in any game has ever floored me. Not GoW3 or any other title this medium has produced in its sprawling history. The only time I ever notice it is not when it's "good", but when it's seriously a bad detriment with lens flare like in Mass Effect 2. So when it's good, my reaction is "meh, who cares". And when it's bad, it feels like someone is blinding me with a flashlight.

I really like how dark the night is Dragon's Dogma. A lot of games treat night as this grey hue where it won't even affect your sight at a distance that much. But in DD, you can only see as far as your lantern permits in the dead of night. I actually dread travelling at night in that game due to how paranoid the inky black night is. It would have really been nice if there were more enemies that would take advantage of the darkness.

Lighting is hard to appreciate because what you're saying, it just feels the way it should be, otherwise you can't cope with it, and as it is an expected standard, you don't pay attention to it unless it's wrong.

I really like BotW's approach. Translucency in leaves is something that is often overlooked. It also has the most true-to-life coloring I've seen, but it still looks a bit washed out in some places like pic related.

Notice how there is never more than 4 lights per object in those F.E.A.R. examples. Hardly ever more than 2 in most of them. Which makes it really lightweight for hardware to handle. It is actually amazing how much they managed to do with this limitation. I am only assuming based on these videos that their limit was at 4 lights, I have no real idea if that is actually the case and it is a while since I last played the game. Assuming that the limit is indeed 4 lights then it would explain why the game mostly takes place inside buildings where rooms almost always have only one light source. Leaving other 3 available for gunfire and explosions, which happen so fast that no one would notice if one of the enemies didn't produce light with their every shot. Maybe they have a 5th dedicated for the players flashlight?

>>15192825

That room has no light sources in that scene. The only light is coming from the players gun.

>>15192806

The grenade didn't produce any light when exploding (or it was lost due to low framerate of the video?). The only light source in that video is the lamp on the ceiling.

>>15192838

Just before the explosion there is only a single lamp above that desk where the enemy is standing. The fire produces no light. It looks like the grenade is making light here.

>>15192848

This room has two light sources, but they are on opposite sides so having them both illuminate the same objects is more unlikely. A third one on the hallway but it is smaller and doesn't seem to illuminate any objects that the other two are. It looks like some enemies shots are not producing light but may be lost due to framerate. This video displays impressive use of lighting with older hardware's limitations.

Just some autistic rambling.

84b7f6 No.15195849

>>15192861

I wish the shadows weren't so hard. Shadows get softer the further you are from the surface the shadow is projecting onto in when the light source is larger than the object because the edges are actually composed of thousands of shadows. It's why you only see a plane's shadow when it has a high altitude.

I know it isn't out yet, but Ace Combat 7 seems like it'll have some of the best lighting (and graphical fidelity in general) of any flight game, let alone Ace Combat game.

If you want a game that's already out Dead Space 1 & 2 have some incredible atmosphere thanks to their lighting effects.

Lighting and color make or break a game for me. I don't care if your textures look like dog shit, if you have good dynamic lighting and no brown or blue filter it looks good to me. Escape from Tarkov has some pretty decent lighting in terms of weather and when you blow lights with grenades it's not half bad. Too bad the game is unfinished and runs like absolute garbage. STALKER has the best lighting in any game I've ever played.

Are there any games that represent night conditions correctly AND use it as a mechanic?

I love Hitman 2016’s engine, for example, but virtually all the lighting is baked in. shoot out every light in a tunnel and that baked in light bounce makes it bright as day. If you could take out the lights and use that TO HIDE FROM PEOPLE, that’d be swell.

>Is unable to notice the fucking spotlights and headlights everywhere

Darkness is a huge mechanic in the game, because the zombies use it to sneak up on survivors. Here are some of the darker areas. It even does the typical "Your flashlight last 10 seconds and has to recharge" thing so the survivors actually have to ration it out. Most outdoors areas have streetlights and shit everywhere while underground is almost pitch black and more dangerous, but that's also where all the guns and ammo is. High risk, high reward of being raped by zombies.

>NPCs don't use torches, light spells or night vision spells, but their AI isn't impeded by the total darkness they're then left in at all so they just navigate the place and do their thing magically I guess

>but that they don't use any sort of lights also means that if they don't have their vision magically bumped up in the game settings (which is something that that mod actually has as an optional extra, because fug) they'll almost never be able to spot you at all

>but then when they do spot you, they'll then magically be able to track you in complete darkness and follow you perfectly wherever you go

>so I just kinda give up on the game entirely realizing that there was nothing I could do about any of that

Although one thing for anyone who's interested, since I went through that whole experience the mod Sneaking Detection Recalibrated has had a feature added to it where on some basis NPCs can now actually lose track of the player in combat instead of magically being able to track them everywhere. So there's that.
