Haven't played anything stalker related in a few months, but the itch is back. Was thinking about giving dead air a try, but while it looks really neat and interesting it seems quite buggy at this point. Anything you guys would recommend? I'm honestly thinking about replaying OGSE, because I don't feel like modding COC right now.

Stalker is heavily overrated. The best thing ever come out of it is original campaign of S.O.C. and C.O.P. everything else either glitchy buggy mess or unatmospheric shooter shit. I have never seen a good mod that would give me an experience like in S.O.C., and the best mods i have tried were the ones with their own unique campaign.
Call of Chernobyl is special case because only freeroaming autists can enjoy that empty piece of shit.

Stand alone story mod, which has a bad but still functional translation, interesting quests, levels are reworked and the absolute highlight are the new labs which are challenging and spooky. Despite its flaws it's atmospheric and very much worth a playthrough.

I started playing Shadow of Chernobyl a few months ago, I ended up stopping as I approached the Red Forest, and it felt really, I guess "flat" is the best word for it. The world seemed well designed, but the game didn't make anything I was doing seem important. All I was doing was running errands for Sidorovich. Yes, I was supposed to be trying to find and kill Strelok, but I forgot the reason why partway through, and the missions I was trying to complete never seemed related to my 'ultimate goal'. I didn't care about a single NPC, the factions were useless too, I couldn't find a reason to care about their aims, or goals, or whatever they wanted you to join them for. Add to that issues with some game mechanics, as well as some writing and design choices, and I'm left wondering when this game was supposed to be the experience people advertised it as. Is the first game just that bad? Or were there a ton of mods I was supposed to download to make the whole experience better?

But most of the addons are also for 98b so I don't know how that would work out. And believe me they are essential.

The reason you were looking for Strelok was because you had a note that said "KILL STRELOK" when you woke up at the start of the game. You had amnesia and had no idea why you were told to kill him, or anything about your past. The point was never to kill Strelok, the point was to find out why you were supposed to kill him, and hunt down any information you could on him, so that you could try finding out clues to your past. You seem to have completely missed the main point of the game's storyline, so it's no wonder you wouldn't get the proper experience.

Most of the missions were more related to finding the Wish Granter than they were to finding out about your past. This is intentional. If you lose sight of what you were actually supposed to be doing (finding clues for your past), you end up getting caught up in the hunt for the Wish Granter without having any understanding of what it is or who you are, and then you get one of the bad ends. The people you help don't care about you or your past, they only care about finding the Wish Granter; it's up to you to remember what you were actually here for.

I'm pretty sure I was playing on STALKER difficulty. I don't remember how high up on the difficulty list that puts me. I found that most of the people ended up saying the same generic shit though. Couple that with the trade system being useless, I never saw it worth it to talk to anyone outside of the main NPCs.

Protip: Anyone recommending you any of the "Complete" mods is an absolute literal subhuman. Complete does nothing but make all 3 Stalker games casual as shit. It causes more bugs than it fixes and you are a bullet sponge while the enemies are made of paper. It was handcrafted to pander to normalfaggots because they have a hard time getting good.
RadioPhobia 2 is for me the best way to start S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for this main reason: Fixes almost everything and is an excellent way of getting used to the usual difficulty of stalker mods. It makes gunfights much deadlier and improves the atmosphere of the game. The economy is harsh but not too harsh and you will quickly get the hand of it. If you start the franchise with RadioPhobbia then you will never have any problem with future mods you may try since the difficulty will stay roughly the same.
Also no, despite what many say, there is no reason to play the game on vanilla first. You may do that if you want, but I see no point.
