721a2f No.15186687

I recently scavenged a bunch of components from the trash of the local university and built myself a new PC. Hardware's not fantastic but I think both CPU and ram are more than enough for most of what I need.

Unfortunately this build really falls short on the GPU, all they had were old cards used for rendering or really poor GPUs.

If I wanted to upgrade my gpu what would be my best option? I'm not really looking to get the latest hardware. Can I get away with getting a mid-range gpu for 100$/150$?

I'll be honest I'm not very savvy with hardware so this whole machine might be unsalvageable trash, I'd be very grateful for recommendations on other upgrades in case they're needed.

Nvidia Quadro cards are very expensive. You could probably sell it for a non-negligible amount.

The CPU is more than fine, you managed to steal a server CPU. Its single threaded performance is superior to an overclocked FX-8350 so you'll be able to run most games with it. |0

at least get a 1060-6GB or AMD 480/580 since you were able to scavenge so much else. if you get anything less, you'll be fucked unless you just want to play PS1 emulators and older games with your rig

e540ed No.15186893

You can get a used R9 270 for like $50. I don't play a lot of AAA games but it's run everything short of Witcher 3 just fine.

e540ed No.15186904

>>15186893

Oh, if you're gonna be doing emulation you should get an Nvidia card instead, AMD's OpenGL drivers are pretty shit. I don't know what kind of Nvidia card you should be looking for, sorry.

I mean up until a few months ago I made due with a 6 year old gaming laptop

Who the fuck wants to play triple A trash that needs a 1060 anyways?

>>15186893

I've got most of the old consoles I want to play games on, the 270 seems pretty good honestly.

Looking at what you have, I'm not sure your PSU has a power cable for graphics cards. The Quadro 600 is powered by PCI only. If you can't find a cable like this connected to the PSU, your choices in graphics cards are a GTX 750ti or a 1050.

>Who the fuck wants to play triple A trash that needs a 1060 anyways?

why are you even building a computer anyway, faggot? like, specifically what games do you want to be able to play? that would help people answer the question of if you can get away with a $100 card. or, if you already know you don't want that, just go fucking buy a $100 and don't shit up the board with retarded threads

721a2f No.15187037

>>15186980

I don't

I've got one that looks like that with 6 connections.

I mean, PSUs are not that expensive, I can always get another one. What would you suggest?

>>15186988

Well I said nothing new that's triple A. So Indies, games that came out pre 2015.

At the moment I'm mostly using this machine for gamedev, so a middle of the line card would be perfect to optimise for.

Also check the wattage on your PSU, if it's 550w+ you should be fine. If not, you'll have to check if the power socket on the motherboard is standard or proprietary before you know if you can replace it.

That's a great gaming rig if you snipe a cheap GPU on ebay. And that's a big if. Sometimes you can get these old "super good" performance/price ones, like: R7:s or 960:s or 970:s, or the likes. It's just luck to get a cheap one.

>What would you suggest?

Seasonic with a 450+ wattage depending on what GPU you're gonna put in it and whether you want to keep it for longer than just one build, the SeaSonic S12II 520 Bronze is pretty much perfect for it's pricepoint.

>>15187048

I would not ever trust a prebuilt PSU with anything beyond what's in the build to begin with.

Wattage isn't as necessary as you might think. 550W will support practically any setup you can imagine, unless you're going bananas like 4 GPUs and like a dozen hard drives. This video explains it pretty well.

721a2f No.15187145

>>15187138

It only outputs 400W unfortunately

99ac32 No.15187151

>>15187145

The dude in that video hooks up a watt meter to a pretty powerful computer (from 4 years ago) while doing CPU and GPU benchmarks.

While the hardware he's using might not be comparable to what you'd use today, modern hardware is more efficient per watt than his setup.

1a20f1 No.15187153

You can find the gtx 970 going for about $150 but since you say you scavenged the stuff i doubt your have a PSU with the tow 6+2 connectors, best bet is an AMD 550 for a low cost but great performance option or the gtx 1050ti if you want to max out that shitty build.

4936f2 No.15187170

>>15187145

400w is fine for a mid tier build. People keep falling for the high wattage meme and PSU companies refuse to admit how little an actual PC uses at any given time since they can keep making easy money off people's ignorance.

5e2457 No.15187183

>>15187138

Doesn't account for optimal efficiency which comes around 50% (mostly between 35-70%, but lower load means less heat which means less aging) and aging reducing the capabilities of the PSU

His Xeon + a GPU with a 6 pin or more would be just right with 450-550

e540ed No.15187207

>18 pins

Yeah, that's proprietary. If you google the motherboard model you might be able to find a purpose-built adapter.

GTX 1050 is probably your best bet.

721a2f No.15187255

>>15187207

Do all the 1050 have a 6 pin connector or should I be looking for a specific one?

5e2457 No.15187277

>>15187255

I don't think I've seen a 1050 without one, maybe some mini/passive/underclocked model

As a general rule if a certain GPU comes with a power connector in only certain models (or if certain model come with bigger/more connectors) you want those that have the most power connector because it generally means the ones that don't are very close to the limit of their power delivery or massively underclocked to not cause a strain neither of which is desirable.

Old joke.

I'm the faggot that bought Z8-D6 Asus motherboard and those sweet 20€ ChinaHP Xeon server processors, and they work better than I thought. The memory that came with them was cased in metal, so I really don't know.

The two separate processors are clocking to 3.8GHz no problem, but memory is seriously overheating. It's idle at 60'C, for no reason.

The processors are at 45'C and the memory is 60'C+, what the fuck?

Do any of you know what's going on here? Going to /tech/ is a crusade I'm not ready to take.

aef223 No.15187792

OP that GPU is from 2004 and was considered pretty shitty back then(equivalent to a GeForce 5200). Just go on craigslist to find electronics resellers or a local tech recycling center and you'll easily find something decent compared to that for $10-15. The card I'm using is from 2008 and I found it in the trash.

>>15187632

This is what he has to say about it;

“I’ve never seen it, I’ve never used a system that had it; I know it’s free software, so ethically speaking, it’s not an issue – it’s just a convenience question.”

And it uses Google's DNS in case no other DNS is accessible as a fallback option. A much bigger issue is their use of Google's NTP server which isn't intended for use by the public. Thankfully most distro that use systemd have their own subdomain over at pool.ntp.org

>>15187643

Throw out any IntelAviv or AMPajeet hardware and get yourselves one of the following. These machines work better, run faster, and let you have full control over your machines- no MOSSAD/CIA/FSB spyware included. Windows wasn't ported to their platforms so you are forced to use a good OS.

That's one of their major selling points

>"Your ISP, and anyone else listening in on the internet, can see every site you visit and every app you use – even if their content is encrypted," the company says on its 1.1.1.1 website. "Creepily, some DNS providers sell data about your Internet activity or use it target you with ads."

>"Cloudflare's business has never been built around tracking users or selling advertising," said CEO Matthew Prince in a blog post. "We don't see personal data as an asset; we see it as a toxic asset."

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/04/03/cloudflare_dns_privacy/

Of course the best option is to run your own DNS server with OpenNIC. You don't even need any extra hardware just run it in a VM if you have cores to spare.
