Heckran and that cave in general is one of the hardest areas in the game hilariously enough if I remember right, which brings me to my point:

You can trade for the following Items after you get Ayla, before you fight Magus:
>Ruby Gun
Petal + Fang
>Sage Bow
Petal + Horn
>Stone Arm
Petal + Feather
>Mammoth Tusk
Fang + Horn
>Ruby Vest

You can get the following items after you fight Magus:
>Dreamstone Gun
Petal + Fang
>Dreamstone Bow

>Magma Hand
Petal + Feather
>Primeval Blade
Fang + Horn
>Ruby Vest

>Stone Helm

After the events at the Blackbird:
>Ruby Armor
10 of each trade item
The easiest place to get trade items is the Hunting Grounds to the North of Ioka Village and East of the Dactyl's Nest. In addition to the normal monsters, there is also a special monster called Nu that appears when it rains. It can pop up in the SE corner on the upper walkway, in the NE corner on the ground level, and in the NW corner through the bushes near the platform with the vines. He gives you 3 of each item for beating him, a Third Eye accessory <only once> 30 tech points, and over 200 experience. He will only pop up 1 time at each spot before you have to leave and return. Nu stops appearing after your first visit to 12,000 BC and the Hunting Grounds monsters become scarce.

Like: It's the best collaboration that Square's top talent, Enix's top talent, and Akira Toriyama ever worked on. Chrono Cross wasn't that great because it lacked the Dream Team that made Chrono Trigger a masterpiece. They also tried to make another Toriyama-artstyle rpg with Blue Dragon, but that failed too. Ni no Kuni is pretty much the best rpg with the Ghibli artstyle and, likewise, Chrono Trigger is the best action rpg with the Dragon Ball Z artstyle.
Bonus mention to the 14th ending in the DS version that finally adds closure to what happened with the Schala/Magus subplot.
Dislike: The original Super Nintendo game is perfect. But the added content for the DS version? Not so much. The Lost Sanctum was an aggravatingly boring chain of useless quests that I still hate entirely. You're forced to do it to get Frog's best gear, the Dinoblade and Champion's Badge. Frog doesn't keep the Masumune when you start a new game+, and the Dinoblade is his most powerful non-Masumune weapon. Champion's Badge is for upping Masumune's crit rate and halving his MP use.
There was also Pokemon-esque monster fighting game, but unlike in Pokemon, you don't directly control your monster's actions. It just does whatever the fuck it wants. It made me want tear my hair out.
My favorite team: Crono, Marle, Lucca. I have a soft spot for those two girls. Marle (or) Lucca are the only two characters that will hug Crono after he gets brought back to life. Showing that they deeply care about him.
Strongest team: Crono, Ayla, Robo. When fully maxed and equipped with their best gear, these OP niggers obliterate everything.

The gameplay has a really linear gameplay progression. As much as I love Dual Techs and wish that they became a mainstay among JRPGs, Chrono Trigger proves how easy it is to fuck it up. IIRC the only things you can do with Dual Techs are either heal or deal damage, there's never any buff or debuff techs or anything. There's rarely ever a reason to not use two of your party member slots for whatever's the max DPS DT at the moment, and the third member will most likely be there mainly for support. Also Frog becomes a shit character around mid to late game and the Masamune upgrade only makes him playable again.

Use your new magic spells you fuckin noob, just like the game explicitly tells you. The monsters in the cave have max physical defense but die in a single cast of Fire, Ice or Lightning. This becomes A Thing moving forward so if you're only doing single digit damage to something, try something else, probably magic or a tech. If it's a dinosaur use Lightning. If there are suspiciously red, blue and yellow enemy types there is probably a reason they are colored that way.

Reminder that much of the time, Enix was merely publisher for various developers, as opposed to developer themselves. Though, I suppose one can still associate someone like Horii and Toriyama with them since they were always part of Dragon Quest (the original versions of games, anyhow) regardless of who was developing, but even then I think they've been essentially freelance. And the bulk of people that were credited on Chrono Trigger were associated with Square anyhow. I'm just saying.

I honestly though Tales of Xillia 1 and 2 had an interesting take on them via Linked Artes. Sure, you had usual damage and healing ones, but then you had stuff like Jude and Leia's Sharpening Pulse. Combining the buffing effects of Coil and Sharpen, it not only extends them to the entire party, but after a mere 100 uses (fairly quick in a real time combat game) the pulse starts blasting enemies with damage as well. Also can't just spam Linked Artes outside of overlimit, as the Link Gauge has to have reached a threshold for the base arte the "master" casts to be overridden with the pairs Linked Arte (which also allows the gauge to start climbing above that threshold and to the next).
>>15188487
It's honestly been getting a bit hard these days to tell when it's just someone looking for quick (You)s, or if we're actually attracting shitters for whom modern ports (be it steam or phone) and letting a guide tell you how to progress is just routine.
>>15188657
The ported content for the DS is fine; it's the new content (Lost Sanctum and the Vortices) that are pretty iffy, and honestly show a difference in design philosophy between 1995 Square and 2010 Square-Enix. Some also do find issue with the screen dimension differences between a 4:3 CRT and DS, and some claim the more accurate English script "kills the charm" for them. it also provides some options to the player, such as moving the menu to the touch screen and freeing the top screen up, and whether or not to have the FMVs from the PS1 port, but leaves the choice to the player. Overall though I find it a good example of why more companies should have waited to port their SNES/SFC games to the DS instead of the GBA, as well as not having the loading issues the PS1 version suffered from. Do hear if you go with the DS version, it's best to play on a DS system. Something about how, while the 3DS is DS compatible, there's some small input related things on the 3DS, such as the drinking game being impossible to win.

Time Travel is not a good plot device. It never has been, and never will be.
Even if you follow the "accepted" Time Travel tropes to a T, there will always be plot-destroying holes in logic and very visible breaks in the chain of causality that make the whole thing irrelevant and meaningless. Moreover, if you can't tell the story well from start to finish in a linear fashion, jumping around is not a proper solution either.
If you're the kind of person that finds these kinds of broken cobbled-together stories "endearing," you need to understand you are a huge piece of shit.

In the bad timeline, Magus watches the world end. Frog walks up behind him and says… "feels bad, man."
After you beat Ozzie, Slash, and Flea twice they resign from supervillainy and start a metal band
Chrono gets a haircut and loses his floppy spikey hair which makes everyone else sad so they go back in time to stop him
If you forget to feed Chrono's cat it will starve to death and you have to use the time machine to go back and feed it in the past
If you bring just Marle to Chrono's room 16 times Chrono's mom will start asking if you are using protection
Schala is a cutie
If you stand still on the Zeal overworld map for five minutes, you will get entranced by the music and you (the player) won't be able to move until someone walks into the room and shakes you

No. There is no game, movie, novel, book, story, limerick or folk-song that does Time Travel "really well." It's a flawed concept.
There is no possible causality in which going back in time would not completely erase the reason (and possibly even means) for going back in time in the first place, thus creating a story that literally contradicts itself if not completely erases itself.

The thing about magic is that it's just a placeholder for an in depth and logical explanation on how the universe's mechanics work. Since it's a placeholder, it doesn't need to actually have a mechanical explanation, although you can provide some kind of "lore" surrounding its creation, its spread, its practical uses, and its limitations within the context of your world. As an example, look at Avatar the Last Airbender. What is the elemental bending ability? It's certainly not described as a magic, but it basically acts as one. It has rules that it follows, and a simple explanation for its existence, but you don't understand how it operates on a logical level beyond a few simple explanations here and there.
As long as the created magical ability doesn't clash with its own stated in-universe limitations, it should be fine to use for almost any application you can think of. Sure, it's not the most original thing to ever do, but since when is anything original anymore?
As an example, maybe some wizard dude has the ability to travel back into time, but he has a limited range of operation. He can't go forward in time, and he can't go back beyond the average lifespan of a person in-universe (e.g. say 100 years) or else the "stress" that it would place on his body would bring him to exhaustion such that he collapses and dies. This is a simple restriction that has a simple explanation and also places limitations on the character's magical abilities. Just don't start adding in complicated shit that makes you second guess how such abilities would operate, and it's fine.

I read the works of some autists who had the displeasure of having to decode the otherwise nonsensical rules of time travel in this game, according to them there are just certain points in time that you can travel to and these points move with the other points in time somehow. So if you spend 5 months in the "past" and try to travel to the "present", you can only travel to the "present" that is 5 months ahead of when you left for the "past" to sync up with the "past", and vice versa. And Lavos has only been vulnerable in certain amounts of time, so after the team fucks up and doesn't kill him they can't go back and redo it.

Large wall of text in spoiler tags for the newfag's sake.
That's the set of rules that they used in Bill & Ted, and it's how the standard time gates operate in Chrono, but there are some variations. Basically, different forms of time travel have different levels of accuracy and latitude in pinpointing the time point you travel to, and different levels of ability to influence the past or the future. Most of the changes the player characters in Chrono Trigger make to the past are pretty insignificant, so they wouldn't disturb the overall flow of history. They do stuff like being generous to the Porre guy in the past so he teaches his whole family to pay it forward, and 400 years later you find the same family being generous instead of stingy, but otherwise being the same. Other forms of time travel include the massive time gate that the party gets sucked into in Magus' castle and the red gate that takes Lucca back to fix the incident in her childhood that resulted in her mother losing her legs, which don't obey the Bill & Ted rules but still only allow minor changes.
The only truly major change to the timeline is the defeat of Lavos, which doesn't affect any of the main characters except potentially Robo because all of them except for him were born long before the Day of Lavos, and in Cross it turns out that he exists on the new timeline, so he either gets built anyway, is more than 300 years old or else was under construction when Lavos attacked. The Chrono Trigger itself is capable of much more precise and powerful temporal manipulations than any other form of time travel, being able to travel to any time point at will and freeze time, but it has the additional restriction of only being able to be used at a certain time and place, and it only works if the spacetime continuum, which seems to be self-aware to some extent, thinks whatever fix you're trying to apply is important enough to justify it. Since the Chrono Trigger was used to resurrect Crono, whose team was trying to destroy a space parasite that threatened to consume the entire universe, that was obviously judged important enough.
Chrono Trigger manages to keep it mostly together as far as plot holes go, but there's still the bit with Marle which should have erased the time travel that Crono did to rescue her when she was erased from existence temporarily because she was the reason he went back in time to start with. There's also the fact that the crew finds out the world has been ruined in the future they travel to, which is the very future they want to get rid of. Getting rid of that future should have stopped them from ever finding out about it, which would prevent them from going on their quest to begin with. There seems to be some amount of leeway involved in time travel, such that when you take Ayla out of 65M BC, the timeline "expects" that she'll come back in order to give birth to descendants, because if that didn't happen, taking Ayla to the future would erase a huge portion of humanity. Basically, if some other path reasonably could have resulted in you learning or doing a certain thing, the timeline will allow events that would otherwise be nonsensical. If Crono could have gone back to the past for some other reason than to save Marle, or if he could have found out about Lavos' attack in 1999 from some other source besides traveling to the ruined future himself, the timeline will allow him to use that information to change it. Given how convoluted time travel can get, it's a wonder that so many people give the developers shit for not allowing the player to do much of it in Cross, but they still introduce several new forms of temporal manipulation.

Most time travel stories don't make sense if you don't assume the time travelers can't be affected by the changes they make. Besides that. I've played games like Grandia and FFX where you can see boss HP and I don't think those fights felt any different from a boss fight in a game where you can't see boss HP, and that's just JRPGs, most action games and even action RPGs show you boss health, so what's the deal?

The problem is that the same thing can be done better in any game with a health meter by having the boss keep fighting after the health meter empties, leading to a far greater panic when the player realizes all their planning was around untrue information.

>Black Samurai based on that slave that became a general IRL (Fast attacks, low health, rushdown)
>Badass Wizard (Geralt of Rivia but with Hardcore Magic and a Crossbow obviously a keepaway character that uses spells for big damage.)
>Donald Trump riding a Raptor with Eagle Wings while using an RPG that doubles as a machine gun. (Rushdown with slower attacks than the Samurai but hits harder)
>High Tech Sister (Think Futaba from Persona 5 but as the healer character and summons high tech gadgets to fight and mess with the enemy)
>Magic Dog with a Stand (Think Koromaru)
>Your friend who works as a Roadie with an Axe and a Guitar (Eddie Riggs but less Jack Black and more slimmed down in terms of muscle mass, also well rounded with the guitar used for magic shit and the Axe used for melee)

There are forms of backwards time travel, both in fiction and theorized by actual physicists, that don't cause time paradoxes. There are alternate timelines in Chrono, so many things can be chalked up to that, and many fans of many stories that use time travel make the assumption that the time travelers are immune to changes as a side effect of the time travel process. There's also what happens at the end of Cross when Serge uses the Chrono Cross. It both weaves the two timelines into one and rewinds time to erase his entire adventure, which Schala says will erase his memory of it, but he still remembers FATE and Terra Tower. Nobody really knows what's up with the last part. It may be that he only remembers fragments of his adventure and chalks it up to being a weird dream. Using a system under which time rewinds to the past instead of having the past be physically visited by people from the future prevents a paradox because nothing from the future carries over to the past, but it's of questionable utility since all your knowledge of the future is erased in the process and therefore you won't know about any catastrophes that may occur. However, if you believe that the universe allows free will, rewinding time may offer a chance to choose a different path even in the absence of information from the future. There's also probabilistic time travel, in which the conditions for causing a paradox are changed because the underlying logical structure is changed. It's described in this Scientific American article:

It's not even that original. I can think of 3 games that do it. Hell, one of those three games has you doing it on an invisible time limit as well (prevent the boss from reaching a location) and incorporates one of its other mechanics (you get a command prompt to do a high-damage finishing move that up until now has always ended the bossfight with a cutscene) into it, where you just fucking spam finishers and the boss keeps putting itself back together after every single 'ending' cutscene.

I only prefer the ability to show health bars or equivalent, if there is an opportunity/loss to it. Namely, the multiple "scan" actions, or upgrades across different games. You are forgoing an attack or support action, to gauge either its current health, resistances, or weaknesses. But I also appreciate any small things that heighten tension or suspense during a boss battle, without coming across as overly cheap.

Time travel is shit. It's hardly ever done in a convincing or internally consistent way.
And Toriyama's designs are good, but they have become so over-done and copy-paste that I can't look at them without seeing the component parts from Dragon Ball characters, because that's all they are.

The problem with it as a side story, is that it takes so many steps to wedge itself into the main plot. A lot of it is really malicious too, Gato burns to death, Lucca is implied to be murdered, Chrono and Marle apparently die offscreen, you WATCH Robo die, and the only returning cast member, Magus, had his story mostly excised and left on the floor. That's not even getting into the plot outright stating that the great things you did in the previous game only made things worse, and only Serge and his SUPER COOL DOUBLE BLADED SWORD can save the world. The Masamune is my favourite vidya sword, and it's simple design is part of why I like it. Now it's got a jagged edge, two blades, it's green for some reason, and it's called the "Mastermune"? Fuck off, this is beyond Poochie.

not bait, Xenogears is a shit load of missed potential and while its ambition is adorable, the subject matter it tries to cover is conceptually cool, and the art design was great, the game falls flat in execution and is painfully boring to actually play. Moreover, while the current trend of remaking games usually means mediocrity that doesn't mean that one could not theoretically pick up the pieces that were left on the cutting room floor and fixing these unfinished games. Both Xenogears and Secret of Mana where unfinished. When I suggest they are remade I am not talking about that garbage they just produced as a cash grab, I am talking about getting the band back together to finish the third act and to fix the problems with the initial release.

The extra DS content could have done great at setting up a sequel to both games, but Square Enix are THE GREATEST cunts of all time. That whole "the sales were under expectations" line was total shit, it sold great for a double dipped port of an SNES game.
511f42 No.15207959

Yeah, that whole "if fans wanted more Chrono, they'd have bought more of the DS port" rationale was trash, both between the game getting a million or so sales despite having released here twice in NA (did they think it being the first time PAL got it would make it a best seller or something?), and the fact that it didn't stop them from doing digital rereleases on the VC, PSN, phones, and Steam after the fact. Obviously they weren't averse to milking what already exists (whilst still not bothering to give PAL official access to Cross ever) and is considered a longstanding classic, but clearly there wasn't enough interest from fans worldwide to make a new entry after all these years (yet were all too willing hail Setsuna as a proper successor). Though, considering modern Square-Enix' quality, I'm not sure I'd want a modern Chrono game in the first place.

What if time isn't linear, and you going to certain points was predetermined so that you wouldn't see the after effects until you had already done the thing. Cross doesn't say you made things worse in Trigger. Unless you have the power of a god and can change all points of the timeline to anything you want, it's logical to assume that changing just one thing won't fix everything and that problems will still occur in the future. Deciding which set of problems you'd rather deal with is left to you.
>>15207354
It's not flawless, but it's definitely not trash, either. The Gear battles are fun as fuck and there's even a fighting game-style mode to fight with them. Some of the dungeons are painful though, like the sewers in Kislev. It also would have been better if enemy encounters were done like Chrono instead of random encounters. Honestly, I don't know why any game after CT ever had random encounters except as a nostalgic throwback.

Speaking of old RPGs, I've really been enjoying Suikoden 1 lately. I just to getting your ass kicked by your dad and I'm really shocked at how hardcore some of the events are in this game I certainly didn't expect Elf Genocide, I figured we'd arrive in time to save them like every other anime. Sylvia lived, but she's cute and Stallion is fun so I'll let it slide. Also Holy shit, characters drop like flies. First Ted, then Odessa, Gremio got it REAL BAD, and now maybe Pahn? I'm convinced there was no way to win that either, I got every advantage possible, but whenever he pulls a Reckless Attack on you it just seems to go through no matter what.
I also really like the battle system itself. The animations are stellar for what they are, and it's got a lot of neat combo attacks with party members. Wish they'd tell me what each Rune ACTUALLY did in before I used them, but oh well.
