I'd have to say that Odyssey is the second best 3d Mario, after 64. The problem is that 64, despite being my favorite platformer of all time, is really only "good and fun, but dated". The problem with 3d Mario is the shoehorned gimmicks. Sunshine had one that completely invalidated the platforming and any challenge, so the only even remotely hard levels were those that removed the gimmick, and that's kinda like making the only good level in Sonic one where he can't run. Galaxy, same thing, the gravity forced simplistic level design, and the harder levels were just more linear, less fun 64-esque levels with black holes all over the place. Odyssey is not as bad with it's gimmick, as you can avoid it if you want, thank fuck for that, but the captures are still basically just "take some movement type that Mario can do and limit your options to just that one move" in most cases.
On top of that, I'd say, Odyssey finally tried something a bit more original with the stage themes. I'm still pissed off by the fucking desert stage, I fucking hate desert stages, but the Steam Gardens were a bit different, Bowser's Castle was neato, just a bit fresher than it had been. Not as good as 64, though, Tick Tock Clock was a fucking awesome idea and nothing has reached it's peak yet. Galaxy didn't have any of that, and Sunshine is fucking trash in that regard.

Perhaps, but I think ESA dodged a bullet with Proto not showing up in the end (we don't really know why, do we). Imagine he did show up, got memed on as expected, and complained to the organizers. I suspect moderation and control would definitely go up, and everything would be more sour obviously. Who participates and causes or doesn't cause drama is also important, and you can't fully control/predict that.
Let's be hopeful for the future, though.

That's how got DEF CON. One year there's one or two, next year they're talking about inclusivity and trans issues, the next they have dedicated sections for queers. As in, a separate, cordoned-off queer area or "village" for queer propagandizing, and the occasional talk that has nothing to do with the overarching subject of the conference and just about feelings and prejudice.
