Characters don't stand out enough. One of the good things about Smash and why adding more SwordsEmblem characters is bad, is characters each have very distinct personalities in their shape and design.
Heavy characters are physically larger than others, smaller characters tend to have less power in their hits, sword users all prominently feature their swords in their stance and the weapon reflects their style. More mystical characters tend to float and glide with their rolls/walking.

The only way I can be proved wrong is if these characters have VASTLY different movesets and playstyles. Even then I think it is still a poor design choice since characters should look as physically different as possible to outline their playstyle. This was a problem with Smash adding Sword Emblem characters since they could not be changed to look different since they were already established characters. This game has no excuse to have characters look this similar if they are building their own original characters.
It's a shit game, as far as I can tell this is just another wannabe that does not bring anything new. They are trying to compete with one of the largest "fighting" games out there and they are starting off strong by copy-pasting and mooching off the success of literally whos.

You must be clueless about the Brawl modding scene then. There are tons of character mods for the game. Ridley, Scott Pilgrim, Goku, Little Mac and Cloud before Sm4sh came out, tons of crazy shit. There are so many to the point where mod packs that compile them all into one .zip folder more than double Brawl's original roster.
