Here's how I understand the lore:
>For eons the world is ruled absolutely by an omnipotent god called the "pantokrator" (another name for jesus christ) until eventually the pantokrator suddenly vanishes.
>The abscence of the pantokrator causes a power vacuum, and beings of great power ("pretenders") emerge and assemble their respective nations and begin a war, fighting to become the new pantokrator.
>They either ascend to pantokrator by capturing magical "thrones" of power or by expanding their dominion (religious domain) to snuff out the other pretenders'. Pretenders are permanently vanquished (as opposed to being killed, which is only a temporary setback for a pretender) their dominion fails to occupy even a single province, or when they physically/militarily fail to do so.
>When a pretender captures the proper number of thrones, or conquers the entire world with their dominion, they finally ascend to pantokrator status.
>For eons, the new pantokrator rules with absolute power until it suddenly vanishes into the void. Thus, the cycle starts anew.
