A Minetest server with players from /lv/ and /tech/ has been running for a little while now, and we thought /v/ might want to play. We have sneak jump enabled, mesecons, technic, dynamic liquid, magma conduits, moreblocks, moreores, etc and we're playing on the new Carpathian map generator.
You will need a 5.0.0 dev client to join, there are autobuilds for some OSes here: https://gitlab.com/minetest/minetest/pipelines and a general builds forum on the Minetest forums: https://forum.minetest.net/viewforum.php?f=42
If you can't find an up to date build for your system I recommend you compile the latest version of Minetest yourself.

Some simple small random dungeons are already in Minetest (they occasionally have loot), Geomoria (a worldwide dungeon layer) and tsm_railcorridors are on the server in addition to that. The server crashed for a while because of mymonths, that and the water mobs have been removed now so it should be a little more stable. There's gonna be a lot of unknown entities and nodes near the spawn but new areas should be fine.

Minecraft used to run fine on toasters when only Notch was working on it. Even the browser version was playable, although it was better as a demo than using it over the desktop client. I still had hope for a good finished game at the time. I'm pretty sure it was around the time Notch started getting less involved that performance requirements started to noticeably rise. (That or it was just coincidence that since 2009/10 people have upgraded from XP to 7~10 and thus got more powerful computers for Mojang to target regardless of Notch's involvement.)

Actually this is pretty tame, Lua gets used as an easily embedded language for various games/text editors/other programs and LuaJIT is very fast and competitive with Java and Golang in terms of speed. CMake is just a build tool, Makefiles are going to be in any project with C code and the shell scripts are probably non-essential or platform specific. Mainstream browsers probably use like 5-10 programming languages due to all the feature creep.

It was long as shit, but in the road we faced many perils, and explosive chests.
First, after traveling through many woodlands and jungles, we found what we thought was a desert. It turned up to be a savanna instead, so we both felt a bit shitty. A force in me told me to go further, and I mustered all my strength to continue. It took me more that 2 times the time it took me to get to the savanna to reach the dessert. In the desert, we both began mining for desert stone. I got 50, although I don't know how much did Painis get. Then, a monster, one of those that shoot balls at you, spawned in front of us. We killed it, although it almost killed us. It dropped a diamond block. I got myself 4 diamonds and gave Painis 5. Then, I spotted a pyramid in the distance. Upon reaching it, I saw what looked like a fire elemental or a lava golem and more of the ball shooting enemies. We skedaddled the fuck out of there and had a normal, smooth and easy journey back home.
In the end, I discovered that it wasn't the desert stone I wanted for my grinder or the diamonds that I luckily obtained the real treasure, but the friendship that had blossomed with Painis in this quest. To add "dramatic" effect, I was listening to embed related through the whole Quest for Desert Stone, as I like to call it.

When we get a functioning, stable and satisfying server, I'll start looking into renting a powerful VPS and migrating what we have to there.
On the performance of dynamic water, I have started collecting some stats of the server performance and bottlenecks, but I don't see it being that heavy. Mobs, with their AI and path-finding, are by far the most computationally expensive mods.

The Minetest API is fine for doing simple stuff such as adding new ores and tools, but as soon as you try to get into slightly more complex things, it starts to be very hacky. Adding metadata to players or the terrain isn't straightforward, the API is overall inconsistent (some function take in players, others take in player names).
Forget about any kind of visual mod: you can't add new shaders. New keypresses? Tough luck, the keyboard isn't exposed to the API.
The API improves in 5.0, but not as much as I'd like it to.
On the other hand, even though Minecraft doesn't have an official modding API, Forge does the job pretty well.

The same is true of minecraft, combat is absolute shit in this game. It would be nice if we had more weapons than sword and bow. Also, the sword should swing in an actual arc instead of a short ranged hitscan on your cursor. But I guess the crappy minecraft engine won't allow this. Minetest could be a different story if someone cared enough to put the work in. There is a lot of untapped potential in minecraft and it's clones. They could be like Terraria and Dwarf Fortress in 3d.

Assburger town (the spawn town) has gotten pretty built up, and its connected to Port Pine (2nd town) by rail now, but not all the rail has been set down for the last bit of the railway. The spawn mines reaches the underground ocean and some big dfcaverns, lots of interesting stuff down there.
Performance seems to have improved since host switched to a different database and LuaJIT, you guys might wanna get on now. We don't have many settlements outside of the spawn yet and someone could get around to colonizing the distant areas already.

You can't pick up the animated blocks without the mod either, and that grass will block water regardless unless its in the flow_through group (which is added by dynamic liquids). In that webm I think you did destroy a source block, it just moved very fast.

That's not what I'm talking about. By "animated", i mean the water is constantly changing between source blocks (flat and can be picked up) and flowing blocks. (slanted and can't be picked up) A pool of water that's had a few blocks removed will wave around for ages and probably never stop, so if you want to pick up some water you have to wait until a given block turns into a source block.

I don't think you understand the problem here, it's that it works too well.
I don't have to put much effort into anything, and that makes the game lose interest.
My problem with things like sprint is the exact same reason i hate in Ace of spades.
Because it breaks the flow of the game in such a way where building is thrown out the window for other things.
Add the fact that the server had spawn right next to a FUCKING PRE GENERATED VILLAGE makes the entire challenge lose itself.

Teleport is cancer, it takes away from the need to form coherent paths and track where you've been.
Part of what made minecraft good was the risk involved and knowing you'd have to walk all the way back to retreve your items.
Theres so little in the progression system of minecraft that this slower paced way of doing things balances it out.
It's not like terraria where theres fuck load of things to do.
Minecraft is sold on it's survival and building.
Not on a huge progression system, it might be fine if you add mods that have massive fucking progression, but in vanilla it's just fucking dumb.

I think the sprint mod comes with stamina but only for sprinting. Seems like it can be turned it off in its settings file through changing some values (makes it impossible to drain stamina/run out of stamina).

I think you need to extend it a bit for non-default mods but it could be reworked to be more interesting.

You have to add support for non-default mods manually but it isn't too complicated according to the developer:

Optional technic support would have to be added to the mod. Alternatively you could just read the technic manual on the internet.
