CO-OP / GROUP EFFORT GAMES
What are some good games for multiplayer co-op? There's something magical about working together with strangers and forging friendships out of it. Some of my best vidya memories are from diving into games with a bunch of random faggots from /v/ and figuring shit out together.
I stuck with Wurm for years but that has shit player retention and grows stale quickly as a result.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory had a really good co-op mode that I played with a friend in grade school a lot. Would be fun to emulate if you have someone locally you can play with. If you're specifically looking for something to play online, We Were Here is a pretty interesting game but is best played with someone you already know.

I've been playing through Resident Evil 5 with a friend, it's vastly superior with real cooperation and without the idiotic AI. We've also played quite a bit of EDF 4.1, it's much less grindier with two people working through it.
I almost never play co-op online, it's always either frustrating being held down by noobs, or emasculating playing with people much better than you. Not to mention the litany of issues which come from disconnection, ping, or hosting. If it's not splitscreen or LAN, I'm not interested.

I've had a hard time finding local "co-op" games that aren't competitive games in disguise, or have some sort of incentive to work against your teammates at times.
We Were Here was fun but it has no replayability.

There's still plenty of problems, but the whole game just makes more sense in co-op. We want to play 6 after we finish 5, though we want to get through 5's extra missions before that.
I refute the claims that "even bad games are fun with friends", since a well-designed game which is designed for co-op does everything right to challenge your teamwork. The first (and last) time I played Borderlands 2 co-op years ago led me to realize this, it's a pretty bad game from any angle, playing any style. You never really interact or plan, and the second player might as well not be there.

Your first Wurm serb is a great experience, but I wouldn't ever touch it again unless there was something drastically different since it's so repetitive each time, and all the vets know exactly what to do. I think multiplayer games are dead, and it wasn't even bad design that killed it, it was society.

This is why I never like to play with randoms. There's always going to be a large community of people with no life who can play the game like a job, while I can only afford a handful of hours each week. There's no way I can compete with them, so I simply don't. Even playing something entirely co-op like Risk Of Rain or Terraria, there's always this air of competition overpowering the cooperation.
So I just always play singleplayer, or something splitscreen with people who are at the same skill level as me. I might be missing out on some great online games, but I think my disinterest has saved me from wasting all my time and money playing WoW or whatever else.

Risk of Rain is not balanced for more than 2 players. It's barely balanced for 2 players. Co-op Terraria is just autists who read the wikis and just follow instructions so they can do everything while you sit there trying to figure out how to play. Both are bad co-op games.

Foxhole, it's improved alot from it's latest updates but whether or not it's good in it's current state I guess is up for debate.
The game isn't too dead and there's some pretty awesome battles that still happen in it, and honestly it being kind of dead is a good thing because now there are barely any shitters in it.
