It depends on the area, whether or not you have independent stores, and whether or not they aren't just cancer. Directly in my town, there's still pretty much no non-Gamestop game focused stores, but the surrounding towns having less of them has resulted in there being a number of independent stores that are still within reasonable driving distance, a few of them actually good. Multimedia stores also help out some, though prices can go both ways: a lot of the time they're overpriced, but occasionally I'll find something good that's usually a lot for an absurdly low price at them.

Meanwhile, visiting my dad recently, they now have no non-Gamestop game stores where he lives (and they only have a single Gamestop about two towns over). Last one apparently got closed because it didn't meet the criteria the outdoor mall it was in wanted their venues to have after a remodel (and they weren't the only store in that corridor that went under), but their prices were also pretty fucking bad because that state is hipsterville. Thus, if you want to buy games older than seventh gen locally there, you're now stuck with pawn shops that are either asking too much or have fuck all for good games, or having to drive a good 60 miles (30 each way) to reach the next decent sized town with a surviving movie rental store that also sells games on the side. Makes me glad I've got a modded fat PS3 and Wii out there to kill time with and bypass the issue.

Tangentially related, but after having checked a few stores in various states, it puts local prices where I am in perspective a bit. Which isn't to say they're always good, but I find it baffling and appalling that stores in other states can ask about twice what things go for locally where I am, and not only stay in business, but have the locals consider those prices to actually be quite good.

It's the weekend before Bloodborne comes out. I'm visually disabled and can't drive so decide fuck it, I'll walk 20 minutes to GameStop so I don't have to order online. Gamestop's got some sort of policy where the employees get in trouble if they don't harass customers about preorders. Not saying the employees don't share some of the blame for simply working there, but they do seem to have to have to do so if they want to keep working. They don't have to be condescending about what someone's buying though, especially since any purchases are making them money; if I wanted to be told, say, "the original DS [was] just another Pokemon system with nothing else worthwhile on it", I'd go here to get shitposted at.

I don't go there much anyhow, mainly because there's relatively few systems they stock for that still have games I'd like to pick up. Last thing I got there was a $15 copy of 3DDGH for the PS3, and that was actually a good bit cheaper than other places around here for once (typically about $30 elsewhere, and the one place that was cheaper than the average hilariously enough didn't actually have the game, just the case).

Again, where I actually live I've got more (and in some cases, decent) options. i have easy access to a bunch of cheap retro games like sports games, I buy high quality reproduction stickers (about 4-5 bucks each) and re-sell them to gamestop for 30 dollars credit each, give or take. They take SNES, Genesis, NES and if you're smart you can pick quite a few good ones, heat gun the sticker off, goo-gone any remainder and apply the sticker from bottom to top very carefully and since they have no way to test classic games they just take them as is.

There's nothing worth getting from them anymore, except maybe 99 cent sports games for their case (if you like to buy used games online). When they had PS2/GCN/GBA stuff it was possible to grab hidden gems at good prices, and even for games that were actually rare/high demand they kept prices reasonable (nobody wanted to sell for more than what GS would). Without that they only have PS3 games (360 had no games), and virtually all the ones worth buying can be bought off PSN (or at this point, just pirated. PS3 has piracy on final firmware) so there's no real games you'll miss if you don't grab.

When I worked at GameStop, I had the same situation with a kid trying to buy Conker's Bad Fur Day with his mom. You know what my manager did when I had to talk to the mom about the game? Best Buy is there if you want to by a tech thing but have no idea about any of it. If you need a computer for work or school, but have no idea what processors or any of that shit is. If you want a home theater setup, but have no time or patience to learn about any of it. And their tech services are for when those people have their things break. Most people who bring in their computers to get fixed are boomers and shit who don't know how any of it works but have plenty of retirement money.

Best Buy makes almost no money on actual products (at least regarding computers, the profit margin on those is razor thin); they make money with services (like protection plans) and selling accessories that are marked up to an absurd degree (oh you want to hook a monitor up to your new laptop? You'll need an adapter, we have that for only $30).

Whether or not your Best Buy will treat you like shit varies wildly; stores that are managed well have happy customers, and employees who actually want to help can do wonders for a store.

Poorly managed stores and shit employees makes for no interest in actually helping a customer, thus a bad store.

Also if you give shit to an employee for no reason, don't expect much help.
