Flamethrowers, often useless at long range, but excellent against swarming melee enemies and above all the most fun weapon in video games because of the burning scenery it can provide.

I don't know of many long-ranged flamethrowers which shoot like gigantic fireball infinitely or even ones which leave lava behind for defensive measures.

Still, the flamethrower has especially been the most fun weapon in video games because the flames highly interact with the environment especially in forests. When you want to turn everything black and leave a nice spectacle of flames behind you then you use the flamethrower.

The only acceptable flamethrower is the one which leaves the flames on the ground and walls, otherwise in my book it's not a real flamethrower.

You won't see the acid, lazer, rocket projectiles offer the same spectacle as a good flaming scenery.

Most flamethrowers in games are shit, but there are a few good ones. Vermintide 2 has a decent one, and so does Killing Floor and Enemy Territory. Rising Storm has an excellent flamerthrower and by all accounts handles somewhat realistically. Deep Rock Galactic's flamer is kind of shit, along with most others.

The HL1 shotgun is amazing, 8 rounds, 120 in reserve, can fire both cannons at once for 3x the damage and works at medium range, it is almost as good as the halo combat evolved shotgun, hell i have never seen a shotgun that was as good as these two, most developers go for the extremely short range shotgun meme.

The Boomstick in KF2 is fucking godly, and even better now that you can upgrade it and take it to the end-game. Single or double action, sawn-off so it has a lot of spread at range but at point blank everything will get staggered by it if not immediately one-shotted.

Men Of War Assault Squad 2 had some of the best flamethrowers in videogames. Fucking everything they touched died, their range was realistic, and the flamethrower tanks could even kill other tanks by burning their engine compartment.

Red Orchestra 2 and Rising Storm 2 probably have the most satisfying and powerful flamethrowers in gaming. They have around 50-60m of range and kill basically instantly, they also have some bouncing physics and you can shoot it in a trench or a bunker and it'll fill up the entire room. Insanely powerful in any trench or point clearing work, but not overpowered because despite having very high range, the engagement ranges in RS2 can be up to 100-300m and any rifle, and even a hunting shotgun using buckshot can outrange you.

Great unit, but not as good as SAS PIATs cheesing you by being handheld indirect fire artillery, radio ops having enough range to get free kills on any vehicle that gets detracked, and snipers generally ruining everyones fun on open maps.

Its excusable on the tanks because at least you have to risk the vehicle itself so it isnt a pretty much guaranteed net gain.
