Try doing business with valve. I work for an advertising firm that hand a small hand in marketing the Steambox back a couple years back. When I say they're lazy as fuck, I mean that to the very heart. Their HR department never gets back to anyone, even when its in their favor.
Steambox would have taken off, it would have been a competitor to the Firestick and Roku. I could even seeing it be a potential hazard to consoles, but Valve is so fucking lazy that they didn't even respond to our requests when we offered to place their advertisements in magazines and websites.
Mind you, they already paid for these to be made - they just didn't get back to us when we said we had potential leads of magazines, websites and even newspapers that had an interests of allowing them to become a sponsor. It was on another level of lazy and unreal.
I know nothing else, I didn't speak to Gabe (or anyone, for that matter) and I didn't get an inside look into their company. Though, this is apparently an issue and a reason why you don't commonly see steam advertising outside of their own client.
Doesn't surprise men that paranoia runs rampant either, their finacial choices are erratic and make no sense.

Purges at Valve are hard to believe, they even got a new bigger office recently just to house more employees. They don't need to fire people due to corrupt and incompetent management, Valve is a private company that prints money. What probably happens is they cull people who aren't up to standards or are simply obsolete after a project is done/failed (happened with some of their hardware people). This guy is probably not as good as he thinks he is. Glassdoor positive reviews always mention the fact that it's a highly competitive work environment because everyone is highly skilled and competent and has high demands for other colleagues. The negative reviews are "muh feelings, toxics" just as this guy is bitching about. They are frustrated they did not make it in there and instead of accepting the fact that they are not good enough they simply blame it on others.

Interesting info, but I'm surprised we don't hear about it more often. Many years ago I remember reading about an ex-employee account. It must have been early 2000's as Half Life 2 was still relevant and valve's lack of titles wasn't as apparent.
At the time everyone was gushing over how Valve was this amazing company that let their workers do whatever they wanted. Teen me didn't know much about economics, but my dad owning a small business made me raise an eyebrow. Any company has costs and revenue. You want more of the latter and less of the first. "At some point these small independent groups must be held accountable somehow, if you're bleeding money the company has to either demand you change your work or let you go" is what I asked myself.
The ex-employee I mentioned said that there WAS an unofficial hierarchy going on, that not every group had the same freedom to do whatever they wanted. At the time I thought "well duh" and moved on. Their lack of releases did not surprised me. And I'm sure if it weren't for steam, Valve would not have survived as a developer alone.
The funniest thing is seeing the soy generation, so openly leftist and outspoken against capitalism, being played as labor force by people who actually know how productivity works and how to make money. I'm no fan of Valve, but kudos for that.

We know Valve is shithole from what we saw as a customers. It doesn't really matter what some ex-employee said.
Valve is slow as fuck to release any features or fix existing problems on Steam. Their main product is not going anywhere and they are just allowing GoG to slowly take their market share.
Their games are just platforms for lootboxes. Dota and CS:Go that is. They managed to kill anything else multiplayer but either lack of content or mismanagement.
Other franchises they own are slowly being either forgotten or destroyed by shitty deals like Hunt Down The Freeman.

My theory is that self-organizing thing is real but with huge caveats
Nearly everything they are doing wrong is done in the background, stuff thats been carried over since many of the old guard worked at Microsoft
They havent figured out how to replace many things properly and are doing stuff hand over fist, but ending up with similar structure as those days
Now this was fine as long it wasnt prominent in the company, when it was in the early stages, problem now is the strong people leading teams have either gone (left Valve) or no longer care and are collecting paychecks (Gabe and veterans)
Its gone so hands off that everything is out of control and directly now depends on this "self-organizing" stuff, leadership isnt taking charge and making people finish games like they did with Half-Life 2 etc upto 2012
