Try as I might I just can't get into these games enough to finish them. I always get to a point where all of my interest immediately evaporates and I drop them sometime around the 70 hour mark.

Been playing tales since the beginning, Eternia probably got me most into them though.
Bersaria was a great game, miles ahead of Zestria, though not quite a Vesperia. Velvet might not be the most original character, but she's one of the best protagonists since Yuri for the sheer nature of not being a vapid idiot like 95% of other Tales protagonists. Only real problem I had with Bersaria was Denuvo. The crafting system is a bit tedious but nothing compared to the RNG machine that was Zestria's.
Hearts R was pretty amazing though, they should do more like that, even if the cast was one of the worst.

You can't trust anyone who says Abyss is good. Everything about that game blows except for Luke's backstory and Guy, and when the twist about Luke gets revealed you still have another 30 hours of game left to slog through with the same retards who are only in your party because the game says they should be, and they act like it too. They never seem to actually give a shit about the problems that're going on, because you're too busy trekking across the world to actually try and get home and by the time that happens, whoops the ground is falling to pieces, better go patch up magic Plot Devices because we don't want bad things to happen. All the girls except Tear are Asuka-level bottom of the barrel trash fires. I was pissed off like you wouldn't believe when Natalia decided to headbutt her way into your party despite never doing a damn thing to contribute before that point.
The game suffers from the Fullmetal Alchemist problem, in which all of the main characters are basically insufferable, turning the entire experience into a narrative slog through wet cow manure. You're never given a reason to care about any of these people, in Abyss, or FMA, the game just tells you to put up with it because they're all so COMPLEX AND TRAGIC. The side characters with less to them, like Guy, wind up stronger and more interesting because you just can't stand to be around the MC. On top of that, the world has the spotlight in all the wrong places. All the books lying around hint at a setting with so many more gears turning in the background than you'll ever have a part in, because you're too busy healing McGuffins and fighting Bad Dude Van's Personal Army With No Real Motivation.

I heard they recently changed the main director of the Tales games after Berseria. I don't have much hope that the newest one will be good but it would be nice if it was. Many things in the older games have really been phased out over time. Like there isn't much of a reason to explore and talk to NPCs now that you can just see sidequests on the minimap or things like the Wonder Chef have been phased out. Secret mystic artes are usually not earned through side quests anymore too. Towns have also gotten less interesting designs in both and theme. Like in Symphonia and Abyss some of the towns were pretty interesting to explore but now they're now just a hub to move the plot so you can get back into the combat as quickly as possible. The biggest insult I've seen is how Xillia and Berseria handle dungeons, if you can even call them that. They're all just flat and boring. I would expect a cave to look boring and flat for the most part but it's still not fun to explore like dungeon in earlier games.

What does that even mean? On the note of Berseria, I like how they made every face button its own attack instead of having a dedicated button for normal attacks and special moves. This was also a good move because the direction you held while doing certain attacks could cause the attack to move in the direction for easier crowd control. You could now have access to 16 artes without even getting into shortcuts.
One thing I didn't like about Berseria is how many mechanics are locked behind certain fights you go through during the plot. In Graces F, most of the mechanics are available from the start so if you know what you're doing you can play in a flexible manner. Meanwhile in Berseria, you are very restricted in how you play because most of the mechanics are locked for most of the game. Also the SG system takes advantage of the momentum you can get from the CC system in some of the other Tales games but unlike the CC system it sucks once you lose some of your gauge. In Destiny DC or Graces, you can still do a few attacks with base CC. Meanwhile in Berseria you can only do 1-2 attacks while praying you stun the foe so you can actually fight with your whole moveset. It's even like this late game.

Sure, he's still a cunt, but you're forgetting that he's a spoiled prince who first got "kidnapped" only to be pampered and sheltered to the point of regressing into the state of a baby who can't stand things not going his way and being completely oblivious as to how the outside world is.
The redemption arc is weak and forced as fuck, but at least it has some merits.
I'm not going to claim the game has some outstanding writing or something, but it's consistent in most parts.

Natalia is tough to handle since the arrows can be quite a snag. I main Anise a best while my co-op partner used Guy. Fun times.
And don't forget that Luke as in the replica is merely 7 years old. Replicas start off with no mental development (see Florian), so Luke is actually quite competent to be able to speak, write and fight decently while being seven years old, and spending those seven years captive in Baticul.
What's most consistent so far in Abyss would be the world building. I really liked the whole deal about Fonons and Capacity Cores and what-the-nots. The game did an interesting job when explaining the 'rules' of how the magic (fonic blahblah) works - why Jade's magic hurts enemies but doesn't hurt allies in battle, how the resonances work, etc. It was a considerable departure from the classic jrpg "power of love/friendship" or "it just werks" stuff.

Xillia 2 is a mixed bag. The combat is good and allows you to play in a pretty stylish way if you know what you're doing. The main thing people don't like about Xillia 2 is the pacing due to you having to constantly do side quests to get through the story. It's not a bad game though so getting it for cheap might be fine.

Personally I would say Eternia, Symphonia, Destiny DC, Vesperia, and Graces F. I would put Symphonia and Eternia in the same boat as having an interesting world to explore with some fun characters and decent combat. Destiny DC has the best 2D combat but is moon only. Vesperia replaced Symphonia as "Baby's first Tales" but don't let that bother you as it's still a great game that does many things well. Graces F, however, doesn't do many things well. But damn it has one of the most satisfying combat systems in the series with many great additions to make fighting never boring.

This exactly, which is why it's the greatest Tales the world has ever seen. Every other unique element of the franchise (skits, characters, etc etc) is icing on the cake. The combat is the sponge, and Graces F has the ultimate bestest supreme final giga goodlyness combat of the ultimatum. That's why it's the best. Ignoring, of course, that is also has the best skits.

I only played ToP. I did not even finish it since i was confused about where to go next and the story felt too similar to Chrono Trigger. I did enjoy the combat and i really liked the battle theme so it was not a bad game. I think i was midway in the game (AGES since i played but i stopped when i traveled in time and was in a confusing dungeon)

I'm pretty sure even the most hardcore of Tales fans will admit that Phantasia is heavily flawed. It's barely even playable in its first couple of incarnations, and I sincerely hope you didn't genuinely attempt to play the GBA release.
The only moderately playable version is the PSP re-release but it's never been translated and never will be because Bamco unceremoniously hates their international audience.

I enjoyed Phantasia PS1 regardless, and on co-op to boot. Partner used Cless while I used Mint at first (lol) then Arche and finally Suzu. Spells stopped time, co-op partners needed to waste an accesory slot, and items were abusable to hell and beyond, but it was still a fun ride overall. I would've liked to be able to play the PSP version fully translated, but sadly it'll be impossible for the time being.

I've played SNES, PS1 and GBA versions of ToP, only one I actually finished was SNES one. I was mad at absolute 0 for cancelling the psp, and I now make a point to play everything in japanese. It's the best feeling not being hostage to translations anymore.
Now if only I could get out of my depression and actually play the games
