you shoulda seen it. It was right in the MOTD as rule 1. No girl's allowed. Once in a while there would be one that would challenge it on the server, she would then be mocked, derided, insulted for several minutes at a time until eiher votebanned or admin banning them permanently by their Steam ID. You'd get the occasional one that would hop onto the leet network forums to bitch about it, everyone would respond with porn/shock images circa 2006-2007, and life would go on. Even just joking about it would be a ban.

This was only 10% of what made that server great, focusing on that is pointless as it was a community where you'd have people on at all times, except extremely late like 3-6AM (East coast server btw), but if you were a regular, people would greet you. People told stories of what they did in real life, joked around with each other, and built a genuinely fun community where you'd do something awesome and even the enemy team would congratulate you. This was before steam friends worked so by the time the server disappeared most of the users were left to wander CS independent of each other. Wouldn't have it any other way. Better off as a memory anyway.

Online multiplayer Star Wars Battlefront (Pandemic) maps on PS2/Xbox, especially Rhen Var Citadel, Mos Eisley, and Yavin Arena. Xbox used P2P Xbox Live, but PS2 used GameSpy and you could set up your own server on a PC, and we'd have regular 16 player matches with regulars.

The Silent Cartographer level in Halo. When I was in high school I made friend with a substitute teacher and coaxed them into giving us their teacher level login for the school computers. We had a business course with a retarded nog teacher who would just go in the back office and browse facebook all day. With the teacher account, we all were able to play Tribes and Halo over LAN or if there were just a few of us on we could play Halo campaign but only the Silent Cartographer level for some reason. So much fun was had.

As a big fan of the Night Elves from back during the WC3 days, questing through Teldrassil -> Darkshore -> Ashenvale as a Nelf Druid was a really memorable and aesthetic experience.

Outside of WOW, there was this one 32-player TF2 server that I played on for years. It was always highly populated and many I came to recognize many regulars. The skill level on that server was well above average too. Meet Your Match killed the server and, likewise, my enjoyment of TF2.

The Matrix Online's Mega City, specifically the zone that was just the shitty ghetto part of town. I always remember it being night time there but I think that's just because it's mostly made up of alley ways or underneath overpasses.

All of the mobs of the game were "gangs", so there were some ghetto gangs there, but the worst parts of that zone were filled with vampires and succubi. You can find Neo's apartment there from the first movie.

The music from there is just this constant droning noise during the day or interior parts, and a sick beat during night. The game was made by Monolith so a lot of the samples used in the bgm are samples from Condemned and F.E.A.R.

I sometimes play the single player project repack for WoW 3.3.5 when the nostalgia gets really bad. That helps to make me feel better.

Vanilla WoW, BC and WOTLK were good expansions in general. Very aesthetic, very enjoyable to play in that regard. The world felt like a threat, the mysticism of everything new and exploring, both the world, the gear to get, and your character's abilities.

But anyway, on to the topic of the thread. I severely miss being part of a Napoleonic Wars regiment. I was a member of a rifles regiment, so we often had practice drills on a specifically designed training scene. The scene had everything from shooting ranges to a small, mock battle area. To be totally honest, I preferred it when we had cavalry training with our sister regiment, as the scene was great for cavalry training. I left because I got fed up with using Steam, but I'd have loved to go back to it if I had the chance.

Halo 2, the maps Zanzibar, Ivory Tower, Ascension, and (I think) Headlong. I used to hang out with friends on these maps and either play custom games or just bullshit with chatting and doing glitches. I miss the Halo 2 community as it was, they were super creative with game modes (zombies, Tower of Power, Run From Fatty, I think SWAT before it was a playlist, Paintball, Meteors). And Halo 2 had a "received message" that always made me happy to hear, it was the only community I had in school because I was surrounded by shitty people, Mexicans, and blacks.

Gmod's zombie survival. T'was one of the most popular fan-made gamemode right after TTT. While TTT is fun on its own right, zs is like a jury-rigged No More Room in Hell with emphasis on teamwork. See, this gamemode has it's own rules on its gameplay per wave. In a nutshell, you barricade yourself against zombies, pick a loadout, and survive.

At the start of the wave, zs was mostly about point-farming as much as you could, since the starting zombies were slow and weak. In Zs, you must first find a place to hunker down against the zombies as in you'll be nailing a prop to block a doorway so the zombies won't get through, and each person gets to choose their own role (dps, fixer, healer), OR ELSE THEY'LL DIE. Each roles has its own risks and rewards, and people are most likely to roam outside the barricades to deal as much damage as they could while it's still somewhat safe

Second wave is were things started to get heated up since this is where the first boss zombies gets spawned, and where the zombies gets better. This is where the playing field gets mostly level, and thus probably why the zombies are starting to get bolder and started to rake up the most kills in this phase. By the way, kill 7 and you get to be a human again.

Third and final wave is where the survivors attempt to outlast the zombies. Sure, they could barricade themselves forever and shoot any zombies that attempts to break their barricade. The catch is that, the barricade has a threshold of damage that it can sustain (depends on the size of the prop), and once they're past that threshold, they are no longer fixable. See, this is why 90% of the matches are won by zombies, they're just too tough at this point. Not to mention that this is where the wave starts to churn out the only ranged attack 'zombie', the poison headcrab, that are able to kill survivors inside their own barricade and wreaking havoc inside their safe zone (i should point out that people that died to zombie attacks get reanimated into a 'fresh dead', a fast but weak zombie, but still has somepretty strong attacks). But that's not a bad thing, no siree, since in the end, everybody gets to be a part of the winning team. Hell, i've only won a round of zs once as a human while still being alive.

There's alot of depth of it that i could've never even got to experience and possibly never will, since most of the Gmod servers dried up these days. Shame too, since it has a small, but dedicated following and it's own maps to play with.

God damn, it was so comfy just chilling around Prontera square, our outside of the south entrance to town. I'm tempted to install it again and give it a go, but I had two accounts and every single class and subclass near maxed out the last time /v/ did this on a custom server. All of the characters on my female account (just to get the Dancer class) were named after Autobots and Decepticons, so people wouldn't think I wasn't a man in disguise. Maxed out a High Wizard, and called it a day. I think I'm permanently done with RO, but I remember it fondly.

Moscow in Tony Hawk's Underground 1. People who played that level typically free skated and talked shit with each other. That level is hands down the best level in any Tony Hawk game, too. Best atmosphere, best lines, and the room was always full.

WotLK was my first real taste of WoW. By that I mean I was competent enough to partake in raids and most of the actual content the game had to offer. I was probably 11-12 at the time of release.

My mom's boyfriend (at the time) bought me a huge expansion guide in print as one of my birthday presents and I read it at least 100 times.

When I was young, exploring Northrend, doing the questlines and leveling up alts felt like such a magical experience - whenever I play MMOs now, I always look for something that reminds me of that time. Obviously I'll never perceive games the way now as I did then, but still.

So I'd say the majority of Northrend gives me that feel. I subbed to Legion for a little while around half a year ago on a new account, and leveling in Northrend literally gave me aids. I'd rather play on Elysium at this point.

i feel like i sorta missed the boat with FF11, i went into the game fresh off planetside1's failure and took the same group of friends into it.

but they were the type to race to max level and ignore everything else, i tried keeping up with them at first ,but as i watched the TNL exp totals mount i realized i just wouldnt have fun at the pace they were setting.

Tbh that's part of the reason i learned not to rush and chase that "end game" illusion. Community is what made the game fun, but i think it was their first mmo, and only my 2nd or 3rd so i didnt really have the words to convince them.

There was a game called Haven And Hearth that was more or less a massive timesink. It all started as woods and mountains and plains, and anything that wasn't that was built by some player or another. The 2D isometric style made finding people hard, and you didn't have access to a current worldmap, so everything had to be found the hard way. Some of the players I ever met found a place they liked and they stayed there, doing farming and occasionally wandering around for materials to make the next big project.

I preferred the woods. I used to put on old rain mp3s and just wander through them, nearly eternally a hobo with shitty stats and an easy-going attitude. Sometimes I stole stuff, sometimes I traded for what I needed, and sometimes I did without.

Sometimes, I really just want to quit my job, get a few things together, and just wander out of my house to see where I end up.

Not a permanent place, but going for Cartographer in Guild Wars and fucking off to the different cool spots around the map was great. It was fun to do.
