It doesn't really appeal to anything. I almost get the feeling the dev wanted to make a movie for Sony instead, but settled on making just a game. However, contradicting this is the fact that the game's plot gets convoluted by trying to be 2deep4u hipster trash.

The developers admitted they had too many influences, from pretentious shit from Journey by Not-Jenova Chen to Studio Ghibli films. You can watch Muh Deepest Lore! shit about it with theories from cataclysmic event to some angry god killing everyone, while the developers can just say its about the Isolation you deal with the Five Stages of Grief and interpretation.
