A bit late to the party on this but I've noticed a recent trend of more manly underage boys in vidya. I'm wondering if there will be any games in the near future like this or if the idea is already worn and while having young boys going on a journey to become a man isn't anything new but it's nice that Japan decided to make a few decent kiddos in light of their recent gayness. Although I wonder if people would prefer if they went all the way and just decided to feature more games of grown men acting like grown men instead of kids. Personally I'm fine with this as long as we get more characters like 9S and Lapichet and I'm wondering if there are some more recent games that also followed this trend.

Rex isn't a soy boy, as much as he is a dumb kid. Remember, early in the game he is the first one to suggest storming a fully fortified military base outright before everyone calls him a retard that will get them all killed. Its not really bravery or will that Rex lacks, he just doesn't really have confidence in himself, or at least not internalized confidence. Like for half the game he is absolutely dedicated to being the "one who can protect everyone", but he can barely protect himself. Jin point out this much in chapter 6, and basically calls Rex an idiot for not being strong enough to really control pyra/ mythra. Rex near the beginning of the game is a naive, idealistic and optimistic kid who is trying to live for everyone else, but by the end of the game, Rex has matured enough to really trust in himself entirely, which allows him to really trust and help others. Again, Addam tells Rex that part of being the Aegis driver is more than doing just what she wants, its really being able to shoulder the whole burden of Pyra and Mythra's insecurities as well as his own.

Not really. Yuri Volte Hyuga is twenty-five in the first Shadow Hearts (also worth mentioning the game was aimed at older players, and rated M out here). But it's true that there's much more prevalence for kid/teenage protagonists in JRPGs, and Yuri (ToV, but both Yuris, really) was a pretty refreshingly enjoyable one.
