I recently got into 999 and VLR, I loved them both because it was the perfect balance between puzzles and VNs. I want to check out Zero Time Dilemma with is apparently the last game of the series but I seem to remember quite a lot of complaints about the game around its release. I'm the kind of person who can get his memories of past stuff ruined by a terrible ending and this is the kind of stuff people were talking about concerning ZTD.

Should I still look into Zero Time Dilemma or should I just stop at VLR ? Thanks.

ZTD is worth playing until the conclusion, yes barring you don't hate the artstyle, I know some do. Basically, I recommend you uninstall the game when you become able to use the force quit boxes, it goes completely to shit after that.

Did you like Sigma, Phi and Luna? Then you'll like it all the more since Sigma/Phi are pretty much the focus of ZTD while Akane/Junpei and Q-team are more bleh.

The conclusion is honestly the biggest disappointment of an ending to a game I think I have ever witnessed. The quality in writing in the rest of the game was just a massive step down as well. We go from referencing actual scientific theories, conspiracies, thought experiments and such to referencing Back to the Future as a way of explaining a time paradox. Everything else to how the powers work and character's personalities are different for the worse as well. I think it would have been better if this game never got made at all.

Are there any games similar to these two? I loved the puzzles and mystery

I didn't like VLR so I stopped at 999 and have no intention of playing ZTD.

From what you've both said I think I'll just skip ZTD at least for now, it typically sounds like the kind of thing that will sour my memories of past games.

>>15152975

There's a lot of free games that you can find with the principle of finding a way to escape through puzzles/riddles, I remember the genre being very popular at some point. I don't know how many of those have an actual plot though.

I wasn't that down on ZTD before it decided to void literally every stake at play, but I was never really into the psychic powers and stuff. I think I was expecting every team to have a different type of power, but oops they're all the same after all. That was weak, for sure. However, I remember people already bitching about VLR for this (muh schrodinger's cat in particular), and I don't think 999 handled that well in the first place, personally.

>Hey, we're in what seems to be a titanic, we don't know what the hell's happening, but we're fucked in a matter of hours !

>That's all well and good, but did you know there were different types of ice ? Cool science shit !

Really felt like the writer had a nerdgasm after reading a "crazy but true" factoids compendium and decided to write a game around that. I imagine it only bothered me though.

>>15152975

Danganronpa is the obvious one since it's also made by spike chunsoft and the basic premise is similar (colorful cast stranded in a mysterious place turned prison, a mysterious villain toys with lives, people die a lot, part VN, part other thing, in DR's case it's murder mystery/trial instead of escape the room).

You can also check out hotel dusk or the another code games.

I can see ZTD souring 999 since Junpei and Akane are both assholes who don't really go anywhere, but it really did Sigma, Phi and Luna right. While making VLR moot in the same breath. I just don't get what was the writer's intent.

But yeah, if you just want more of Sigma/Phi/Luna, then download this game and do D-team's route. That's the good stuff in the what the fuck cake.

There's a 999 knockoff on 3DS called Parascientific Escape

Are you kidding? Sigma and Phi's character were ruined for the sake of conflict.

yes this really happens

We know it really happens, winning the coin toss is the mandatory start of the game, then you do it again and lose. Don't waste your time bitching about that, you'll have a lot more to work with by the time you reach the end.

The only good ending to this shitty game is the Safe ending, there was no reason for sequels these shitty.

The issue with VLR's ending is that it's a cliffhanger that leads into ZTD. So you can either end the series with a cliffhanger by stopping after VLR or play ZTD and get a shitty conclusion. I think 999 is the best game in the series regardless of this, but it has the added benefit of being a complete story in its own right with a good conclusion.

>D-team's route

Guess which route Uchikoshi actually had creative control over.

It could have really been a great ending to the trilogy had it not been rushed out on a shoestring budget. I will forever blame Japan's lack of good taste for this.

68cb57 No.15167579

reminder that "the mastermind all along was a 112 year old telepathic old jew sitting in a wheelchair pretending to be blind, deaf and mute who is your son who you sent to the past in another timeline who is always just five feet off screen in any situation but is never directly spoken to, referenced or acknowledged even in situations when it would've made sense to do so" is the worst mystery reveal of all time
