Japanese games really need to stop using shit-tier encodings. Anyway. Open up /etc/locale.gen and uncomment or add ja_JP.UTF-8 to the list. Then run:

# locale-gen

Once that's done you have to run your games with a particular environment variable set.

$ export LANG="ja_JP.UTF-8"

$ wine blah.exe

Mojibake is the result of a mismatch to how the actual characters are represented in memory, not missing fonts. What I just listed is the equivalent to applocale, at least for the text. There are other environment variables for affecting how other stuff is rendered like monetary values.

Linux literally is the PS3 of OSes, it has Zero games. Its a vapid box of code and is only good for coding things that are already readymade executables in windows. To make this easier, I recommend setting an alias.

First, as >>15151971 said - generate the japanese locale. Once it's generated, add this to your ~/.bashrc, make it a new line separate from the rest, below anything that is currently on said file:

alias jploc='LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8'

(you can change 'jploc' to anything.)

Once you re-login to your system this alias should now be available. So when you run 'wine setup.exe' it'll run with your regular lang settings, and when you run 'jploc wine setup.exe' it'll use Japanese locale. Do this for all your VNs and such.

Get locale emulator. Applocale is the past, and you're better off with locale emulator now.

Install and right click your nippon games, choose locale emulator and choose japanese lang.

Linux is used in my production machines because of realtime latency support, which is a requirement for my production machines. This is where the scale of nanoseconds are critical. Windows is simply for "large time" people, in the most literal sense, and that's okay.

Not exactly. If it was a font issue but the encoding was right, OP would get a bunch of identical rectangle characters instead.

This is an locale/encoding issue first and foremost, and possibly a font issue if cjkfonts isn't installed, but that can't be confirmed until wine is run with JP locale properly.
