Yeah, that and my PC speaker when I'd sneak down to play Leisure Suit Larry in the middle of the night. Always forgot how loud that fucking thing was and end up scrambling for something to cover the grill after answering the age verification questions.

I also remember having a physical lock on the PC case that cut off the PS/2 KB & Mouse ports which my dad would "lock down" when I got grounded - but was pretty easy to bypass since it was just a showpiece. Slide the case off, follow the lead from the lock on the front panel to the mobo, and unplug the jumper. Easy as pie.

Not my system - I had a Gateway 2000 386DX, but pic is just for reference since there's underage faggots who've probably never seen locks on PCs before.

Being a young hue poorfag was fun. It was shitty compared to how fast and easy to access internet is today, but it taught us to use it in smarter ways and to enjoy it while not depending on it.

People nowadays go crazy when they lose connection on their phones. I have lots of shit in mine that require no connection at all.

I also NEVER use 3/4G connection, unless there's an emergency and I need to send or receive a message or google something important. People just use it nonstop. The very concept of Pokémon GO was baffling to me since you needed to walk around wasting data like retard.

>you were lucky, my brother and I couldnt use the comp to play vidya until vacations

I think my dad was under the impression that games at that point were so primitive, that just getting them to run at all pretty much required you get a good basic education in computers, and he was more or less right. Especially when I'd fuck something up and then have to figure it out on my own in order to fix it and get back to my games.

Thought about getting my nephew a cheap potato laptop with kind of the same thought process, but computers haven't been like that since before the millennium. Especially not after smart phones. Now most games work out of the box, and if something does go wrong, you just go to "I fucked up.com" and read how to fix it without really understanding why you fucked up or the purpose of the fix.

Still, he's at that age when graphics don't really matter - he just likes playing a game, so I figure if nothing else I could use the potato machine to get him vaccinated with a few decent games and maybe introduce him to the lost art of LAN parties.

Long story short, telecom lobbies ended small ISPs in my country (from ~25% market share to <5%) so we sold the business. Back to dial-up for me… I played pic related on dial-up, as well as Team Fortress Classic, Mechwarrior 4, and a few other goodies.

Did you niggas know that most modems could be muted (meaning no screeching connection sound) by messing with the advanced driver settings? For some models all you had to do was click the mute checkbox in their driver software. But most of us were too dumb at that time to figure it out by ourselves.

Once I figured that out back then, sneaking up late at night to use the internet became a lot easier (another huefag here who only connected after midnight because it was a lot cheaper).

Dial up was fine, I remember even playing games online just fine, it only ever became a problem when I wanted to watch a video that wasn't flash.

Fuck I miss flash.

Being able to have like 15 minute long cartoons not take up a shitload of space was great.

Not to mention watching it on the TV and it going from 800x600 to 720p with the power of VECTOR GRAPHICS

Of course now it'd be fucking HORRIBLE since games are at a minimum 2gb a piece with 20-50 gb downloads being common. And despite optical discs being less expensive than ever you can't use any.

I admittedly kind of miss the novelity of going over to my library and downloading a couple videos to a couple CDs I brought.

And that's another thing I kinda miss, remember when video sharing websites actually you know, let you share videos? It's weird to think my "My Videos" folder is almost exclusively ancient files.

Obviously, but you got a lot of important audio feedback from the modem noises. You could tell if something was going wrong, or if you'd end up with a bad connection prone to dropping just by listening to it negotiate. You really didn't want to start a 12 hour download on an unstable connection with the primitive levels of error correction and no download resume feature.

Related but slightly earlier than this, the best experience modern children will never have is sneakily watching scrambled cable porn. The fine art of keeping the volume low enough that nobody will hear it, but high enough that you can enjoy it, since it's gonna be most of your experience. In reality you end up turning the noise down so low that you aren't quite sure if you're really hearing it or if it's just in your imagination. The visuals consist of waiting and hoping for a moment when the scrambled image comes in relatively clear, and you can convince yourself that you're looking at a breast, or if you're really lucky, a vagina. Of course the colors are never anything more than some weird shades of mixed up primary colors, but you've never seen a real vagina anyway, so maybe that's what they look like. You convince yourself the girl is hot, even though now that you're into it, you're realizing her moans are oddly deep. But hey maybe it's some rough fetish shit. The quickness of the motion that you can make out implies they're really going at it. Switching positions every few seconds, really hammering at each other. The chick is getting on top now, and it's getting clear enough that you can tell she has light hair. Blonde, like that girl in school you have a crush on. Except that girl didn't have a mustache. And that's when you realize you've been jacking it to Hulk Hogan and you've been watching Wrestlemania this whole time.

Kids who grew up with the internet don't even realize what they're missing.

Christ, yeah. I lived out in the back woods, so we didn't have a cable option. But I'd go over to my cousin's place in town on occasion to spend the night, and we'd watch scrambled porn. Though it was kind of a fucked-up scrambling where the image and audio would come in clear or mostly clear for about three or four seconds, then go scrambled again and cycle like that. It's like… remember those VCRs which had manual tracking knobs, and if you turned it too aggressively one way or another the image would distort? It's like watching a porn on one of those, but some asshole is constantly adjusting the tracking knob back and forth.

Though usually we never had a problem finding porn as kids. I always found a bunch of it on the local BBSs. He had a 486, so I'd pack up diskette boxes full of porn I told my parents were games, and take it over to his place to swap. Plus his buddy's dad ran the local town videostore, so we had an unlimited tap of pornos to watch so long as they weren't rented out that night.

We used to catch a ride across town to the billiards hall, and they'd pay us a few bucks each to clean the tables. We always spent all of the cash there, playing the arcade games, buying smokes, and playing a few games of 9ball. One day were out behind the building cleaning out the brushes and found a large box full of diskettes. Had to have been like 200+ 3 1/2s in there, and all of them were filled with weird fetish and Simpsons porn. It was like finding /d/ in a box.

I remember the third-party editors for Warcraft 2, like PUDDraft. Weren't those done through DLL hacking? That's pretty incredible for the time. Today's modding community is shit compared to yesteryear's.

Flash itself is fine. It's a program to make dumb shit, whatever, it's fine. The problem is making it work alongside a browser. It's a security nightmare.

I guess you kinda' had to be there. I remember rolling around near the Orc Fort as a grandmaster swordsman/grandmaster healer. I could raise the dead with a cut-up shirt. You had a limit of 700 skill points, IIRC, and each point was 1% mastery of a skill. None of that "hit level 99, max every skill, even the shit ones" stuff. UO was fun to dick around and explore in, but in a different way than newer MMOs like Ragnarok Online. They were similar games, in that they were very comfortable. Clean out dungeons, mine for ore, go fishing, or just sit around in town shooting the shit with people.

You may have. I've had it up for years. Very few people have nostalgia for the web of old, much less the drive to make a classic website. A former coworker of mine made the CoolGuy90 site linked to in the links page, and the fake Webring links section. If I can summon the will, I will make a section of the site where you can download old browsers, and TCP for Windows 3, as well as other useful stuff, as the sites I got these files from are dropping like flies.

The BEST place to go for classic computer help and conversation is vogons.com. They helped me get my oldternetworking sorted out when I was building the 486 used to take a lot of my screenshots and such.

I played tons of Quake DM and CTF between 1996-98, with a 28.8K modem. It was fine, so long as I could get onto a relatively close server with under 300 ms ping. I played most often at night, and then the speed improved a bit, sometimes could get near 250 ms pings. That was really smooth and fun.

Before that, I played a bit of Doom over 14.4K modem. This wasn't via Internet but just a local phone call to a friend's house, so it was pretty smooth also.

I didn't like Quake II as much, so didn't bother to play online, and Quake III needed 3D card, so I never got into it. I played all the other games with a plain SVGA card, and they ran well, but Quake II was limited to the lowest resolution (320x240 or whatever) in software mode.

Otherwise, I played a few BBS door games. Tried some MUDs too, but never really got into that.

Sometimes I ended up staying at someone's house for the weekend, and they would have a TRS-80 or something similar without any kind of storage device. No floppy drive, no tape drives, nothing. So the challenge was: how can we do something with this? First step was trying to figure out how this particular BASIC dialect worked, and chances are they even didn't have the manual. So there was a period of experimenting, with various amounts of frustration and confusion. But once that was done, it was pretty quick to make some simple games. BASIC really was much easier than any of the current languages, because it didn't care about fancy object oriented shit and complex data structures (nothing beyond arrays). And it didn't get hung on fancy syntax or trying to impose a particular style. You just got right to the heart of the matter and wrote the game, no fucks given about operating system, compiler, libraries, versions, and other stupid shit. Good time, and I miss them. I don't much feel like making games for modern OS and languages at all. It just seems like too much trouble and no fun.

I had a p120 with 32 megs RAM, Debian Linux with no services running (besides crond and syslogd) and the blackbox WM instead of more bloated things. It ran quite smoothly (didn't notice any major slowdowns anyway), but it was a lot grainier than the first Quake game, since that one wasn't stuck at 320x240. It was a slower-paced game too, compared to Q1. And it was obvious the game was designed primarily for 3D cards, since it didn't look as good as Doom, where the textures and sprites were designed for that resolution.

f7d38c (1) No.15180817

That resolution, and colour palette. The last is most important because it was stuck with the same 256 colours total limit as Doom, and much like Heretic and Hexen, chooses a different balance of colours for the overall visual feel, but much more biased to richer few colours.

>So uh, how much… ahem, privacy was there between you two?

About as much as you'd expect from going to a strip club, a donkey show, or a burlesque theater. People have gathered around and shared porn experiences for ages, without the apparent need to whip out their dicks on the spot and have a public circle jerk.

A lot of the stuff on the early internet was extreme fetish stuff that wasn't even so much arousing at it was just astonishing. After all, if porn was what you wanted, then the internet was a pretty shit place for vanilla stuff which took forever to download, was really low resolution, and had the videos often didn't have audio. At the time, you'd be much better off with VHS, Cable, or Hustler/Swank. So really it started off with a disproportionate amount of niche fetish material simply because it was competing for attention from much better sources which had vanilla content more or less covered, but neglected niche fetishes because they didn't sell.

In UO, he said he and his hacker friends would leak their exploits to a mod in the community, basically doing work for free to help them out. One day, the mod got fired around Christmas because they suspected him of "conspiring with hackers" so the hacker guy basically went in on a friday, unspawned everyone's houses and flipped the collective community off. My favorite Flash cartoons were from Killfrog.com. It was one guy but he had a bunch of different series with their own casts of characters, and eventually did a crossover series that was a parody of Survivor, because it was the year 2000. Had games and a chat that always had the same dedicated regulars on it, too. One of his series let you see the beginning and then vote on the ending, which he would then animate.

Actually I'm now seeing that he has a Youtube channel but it only contains a small amount of the stuff I used to watch on his site, and it's not in order or anything.

>Newgrounds is dead

Actually the situation is a little more complicated than that, you see, youtube bribed tons of animators to come over to their platform and crippled newgrounds

Then it adjusted how search and discovery and monetization works in a way that nuked high rewatchability low frequency content (animations) and basically left nearly every animator fucking screwed. Newgrounds is slowly recovering and tom fulp is unclenching his anus when it comes to non "cartoon" animation, so while it's kinda badly FUCKED right now, it's slowly recovering from youtube violating it with a barbed wire dildo and then violating all the animators it basically lifted from them with a barbed wire dildo and essentially forcing them into a career of letsplay type shit.

My dad got a modem in a trade for a car a long time back and I'd find old message boards before internet browsers were a thing.

First game I played online was direct dialing my friend after school and playing C&C1 skirmish. Amazing shit, blew our minds.

Later he went to university and I'd visit him and someone had set up Marathon in the computer lab (they had all Macintosh computers there) and we'd play LAN matches with a bunch of randoms, fucking good shit.

Later, in 99 the first real online game that I got addicted to was EQ, on the Rallos Zek server. My friends and I all played. Loved my Halfling druid for pvp, my one buddy played a Halfling cleric so he could blind and prevent them from bagging their equipment. We got so addicted, and I ended up joining the Army to break the addiction because I was getting depressed that I never did anything, but couldn't quit playing.

After that, I never touched MMO games and I stay away from anything that behaves like a skinnerbox. I feel bad for wow players, at least EQ died off eventually, wow never will.

I stumbled onto some weird sites back then, now everything seems so generic and stale.

There was something like a russian proto-imageboard, it was just one big catalog of images with tags and boy when I found that adult section I don't think I was ever the same.

It had so much cartoon porn and photo morphs that just pales in comparison to what you can easily find today.

Liquidgeneration was another one, although I don't think they had games they had these "sabotage" flashes you could email to people, it would start out looking like an innocent e-card and then start playing porn sounds or shout 'HEY I'M LOOKING AT GAY PORNO'

miniclip and candystand were loads of fun, but I remember some site that had rainyday in the name, had breakout you could play in the browser and a photo morph application that let you stretch and shrink parts of the image

only games I had exposure to before that were either on floppy or cd
