He is obviously referring to games with cut ideas that would have made the game cooler. But he really should have phrased the thread to emphasize ideas that were cut in development, because obviously most games are better than their unfinished versions.

Like I guess maybe he means how Crates were added to Crash Bandicoot relatively last minute because the devs realized the levels were sparse without them. So the finished game is better than the non-finished? On the other hand they removed Stormy Ascent, so fewer levels isn't better than more levels, IMO.

I think I have a cobbled-together ISO of Resident Evil 1.5, but I haven't been inspired to burn it and play it on a capable PSX. Other people have given it a runthrough, though, and it seems neat. It's like there's an alternate reality that actually got that version.

I've always thought Sonic X-Treme looked pretty cool, and wanted to see what it might have been other than Sonic Adventure. But on the other hand, if you go back further than that, when it was still going to be on 32X and before that Genesis, it looked a lot worse. So yeah, Sonic Adventure is better than Sonic Mars probably would have been. And a lot better than the very early version that was based on SatAM and going to be some sort of isometric stealth game.

I liked the idea of starting on the top of the police department and working your way down like some horror version of Die Hard. Having the game be about Leon somehow getting into a town that is supposed to be barricaded is just retarded by comparison.

Resident Evil 2 is when the series exploded, but it was never a matter of sequels or survival horror mechanics. It happened because this was the first zombie game, one to successfully recaptured the feel of Romero's movies. Zombies had been contained to niche movies for 20 years and kids simply died to play out a zombie invasion scenario.

Survival horror obviously helps with recreating the dread and isolation of these scenarios. But had the game been a simple shooter, yet with the same amount of detail and worldbuilding, the zombie card would have still made it a breakthrough. The rest is history, devs are worse copycats than the chinese and have kept rehashing the zombie theme for the following 20 years.

Dead Rising went through a bunch of iterations, tons of GUI, model, lighting, texture, and gameplay events in it's 2-year (I think) dev cycle. Some of the stuff looks like it was better than the final build, like Northern Plaza not looking like a shit hole. Look up Dead Rising beta builds on YouTube, there is a guy who pulls models out to view them and goes over older builds and hidden stuff.

Donkey Kong was originally going to be a game based on Popeye but Nintendo couldn't get the rights so they changed Popeye, Olive Oyl, and Bluto into Jumpman (Mario), Paulina, and Donkey Kong.

Sonic The Hedgehog started out as a controllable ball, like in Marble Madness, but the designers couldn't feel a sense of speed with the ball so they eventually settled on designing a character inspired by Mickey Mouse who could properly convey this sense of speed by going through several motions of acceleration before reaching top speed.
