For me this is Fable 2 and 3. I like Albion. I thought the mixing of guns and swords in an industrial revolution setting. The lore was interesting with Heroes becoming basically a mythical thing, and all but dying out completely in 3 (your character can't even cast magic on their own without a fancy glove)

But as cool as the setting was, the games themselves we're still "press A to defeat final boss" stupidity.

I would have loved a more open type game like the first game/TLC but Peter Molyneaux was basically the prototype Todd Howard.

Transistor. I really liked the art style and world, but the gameplay was just servicable, not terrible but not great either. There was also a moment in the game where you could manipulate the weather/atmosphere and I felt it was massive waste to have that been a one-off thing. It would have been maximum comfy if I could have chosen the weather more often in between the battles. Dry leaf filled winds of Autumn, snow, light and heavy rain, fog, etc.

The entire Neptunia series. Seriously, a high tech representation of the console wars with the goddesses of each console represented by a cute girl? It's a great setting for a comedy. Unfortunately, what we got is the grindiest non-MMOs games in existence, and the only Nep games with passable gameplay are the ones that weren't made by Compile Heart.

The whole Aug thing, the tech is advanced enough that brain in a jar tech is possible even at this stage, you never meet an outright inhuman freak type of NPC who's completely robotic or an Aug fetishist who did that to himself and became a fucking war machine with almost no human parts.

If shit like that whole setting hits real life, there's definitely going to be someone like that and given the extensive functionality of the Augs he'd likely be in a criminal group to fund his addiction because of the meds. Instead of that you just get a giant russian guy who's one-note in the second game and only did the extensive augmentation out of revenge or something.

Like you never meet someone who ASKED for this. The whole big deal in the first game is that your character got his augs because of an accident, but never explores anything that parallels him. I didn't expect the games to replicate the whole conspiracy air the original had, but you'd think that with the whole emphasis on the physical problems of cyborg shit you'd have some sort of ultimate end result in the form of a character, and because of that it feels wasted.

The whole "aug apartheid" thing in the second game also provided one of THE WORST sections of the game, which is the third visit back to the hub city, where everything's all martial law with police going murderboner on everyone including you. Not only was it the least designed section of the game, especially with the linear level design being excellent up until that point, but it also really screwed the whole feeling of the game, the feeling of opression it built up and the whole covert spy feeling the game had in it's city missions where you'd sneak into buildings to get information or kill/knock out mafioso before anything could start was the highlight of the first half of the game, but it was fucked up when the whole city became a badly designed warzone for very little reason.

On top of that the games aren't very good at emphasizing threats or characters, so everything just has this impersonal dull "go here do this leave" tone that was only really brightened up by the stealth gameplay.

Also the lethal weapons on enemies without armor take two fucking shots to kill if you go for a headshot, and silencers reduce damage for no reason and defeat the point of using a silencer because your weapon becomes something that can't even dent wet paper with one on.

Lots of fucked potential, but it was made by Ubisoft.

I got both games for free because a friend handed them off to me.

Mankind Divided actually got close, but was too busy making augs look like blacks when in fact most of them chose to get augged. Like you never meet a complete fucking scumbag or a willing freak on the aug side despite the fact that you're in russia for the whole game.

social commentary can be done anytime, but they boil down cyborg problems to "i have to take expensive meds" despite most working actual advanced cyborg limbs that we've made to specifically combat heavy metal fucking poisoning are braces that detect electric impulses from the outside, no bodily additions needed. And I don't think they even use poisoning as an excuse, it's something ethereal like "we weren't meant to do this to ourselves" or "something not entirely understood" soft cop-out bullshit.

I mean the social commentary bullshit is so high that that opression against Augs in MD is called "racist". fucking seriously.

I have a high tolerance for bullshit, it wasn't a breaking point for me, however what WAS was the whole martial law level bullshit, and it stopped being fun because there was never a rest period where you'd normally interact with NPCs, which really showed the flaws in the combat system.

Far cry primal, i've always wanted a game set in the prehistoric age and primal didn't deliver at all, i mean riding mammoths, hunting sabertooths and bashing cavemen with clubs was nice and all, but it's just a fucking far cry game with a skin on it, the little eagle you get is an attack drone after you put a few upgrades on it, you get a bow that can shoot three arrows at once and you can set them in fire for added damage, there's gunpowder barrels and grenades, society is somehow so advanced they actually let women do anything that isn't taking care of the kids and spreading their legs to make even more kids, the animal taming becomes completely irrelevant shortly after you tame the first wolf, it isn't brought up again until the end of the game, killing animals becomes trivial once you upgrade your spear, you can legitimately one shot tigers with it, i feel like this kind of game would be cool if made by an indie studio that wasn't full of soyboys.

For similar reasons why Morrowind is a "good" game (I put "good" in quotes because I know not everyone agrees on this). There are many good concepts, lore, and roleplaying elements in the game, i.e., being able to use speech to overcome the final "boss" in Fallout 2. However there is lackluster execution in terms of the software. Fortunately there are now community patches that will allow for a better experience than what you would normally get, but that does not excuse the game's original flaws. This is true in both the cases of Morrowind and Fallout 1/2.

You forgot to mention, it has a special safety net in case the player is too braindead to "press A to defeat final boss", where even if you stand still and do literally nothing, an NPC will get bored and instakill the boss for you before the fight can start.

Borderlands. The first game wasn't complete shit, but it was rough around the edges. Then 2 came along, fixed the gameplay, and started going full throttle into Commifornia land.

The idea of settlers, treasure hunters, mercenaries, and megacorporations on distant worlds in the far-off future, is an interesting setting ruined by fucking Queebox and Pansy Bitchfraud, with this pet faggot, Captain Cuck.

The biggest missed opportunity with the whole aug-thing was that they didn't make it so that the more aug-shit you install onto yourself, the worse reputation you get amongst humans and at the end you will not only have to fight enemies, but if you had too much augs on you at the end, you would've gone insane aswell.

The thing is, it kinda made sense with the general population being weary of augs due to them freaking out and slaughtering people in the last game. And aug-groups becoming terrorists and blowing up people. But because the writers are hackfrauds they couldn't do something interesting with it being just a manufactured fracturing-point where they wanted full chaos on the streets between augs "feeling oppressed" and non-augs attack them to start some low-heated civil war between non-machines and machines. Only to take away the rights of everyone else. They should've done something with that and along the lines of what quests you accomplished, which way and who you aligned yourself with. I mean, if you as an Aug-cop goes around killing cops and regular humans, the hatred for augs would rise. They unfortunately had nothing of that.

Didn't they start over halfway through development? If I correctly, there's a lot of floating islands in the distance that are literal discarded level architecture that has been re-used for decoration.

Dammit, I'm stil mad about this game. The game that was promised to us looked amazing, and all the cool shit from the concept art that didn't make it into the game is Half-Life 2 levels of infuriating.

That's not gameplay. I'm talking about being able to pick up ammo and money without having to press the USE key, and being able to run diagonally. They also added a semi-autorun, in that you didn't have to keep holding shift to sprint, just keep holding forward after pressing shift once. The interface and player mobility were much better, at the expense of seemingly everything else.

It's amazing what you can do with millions of dollars embezzled from Sega.
