There's less than a fortnight left before you'll no longer be able to experience the online portion of Kat's game.
Sharing photos with other players, competing in challenges, stealing their loot in the mine, all gone. Too think that there are suckers out there paying for PSN when Sony can't even be bothered to support a first party title, and one of the most unique on their system, for more than 18 months.
Let's have one last Gravity Rush thread to commemorate Kat's departure.
1413cc No.15135950
A real shame how Sony has treated it, a game they never bothered to promote, didn't even show it's E3 trailer at E3, and sneaked onto store shelves to be ignored. Kat's game is going to go down as a classic, a really wonderful experience and I hope for its own future it gets one last patch to allow the players to unlock the dusty token content offline. Even if it's small side stuff, it's still important and part of what made the whole game something truly outstanding.

Don't let the lack of online deter you, GR1 doesn't have it at all and it's only side content in 2. I'm mostly just frustrated at the injustice of it all.
Both games are still fantastic experiences and have a lot of love put into them, something that is unfortunately rare these days.

I mean, hey, what people say about always-online games also applies to offline games that have online functions, too. Any portion of a game connected to a central server will eventually be shut down. It's a big problem when always-online games are killed off, but I feel as though it's just as much of an injustice when just the online portion of an offline game is killed off.

Gravity Rush was a great game. Gravity Rush 2 sucked pretty bad. The Jirga Para Lhao plotline was total garbage and by the time I got back to Hekseville I didn't even care anymore. The side quests were ass, level up progression is ass, mining is uneventful grindy garbage and I'm pretty sure there's only 1 boss Nevi that you can see mining.
Gravity Rush 2 deserves to die, it's just sad it will bring Kat down with it. All GR needed was a conclusion to the plot of the original game. Fuck Jirga Para Lhao and everything associated.

Anyone know if there's a particular refresh rate/maximum amount of treasure hints you can get within [X amount of time]? Just something I've been curious about, as usually I'd just get a string of four or so at a time, before not getting anything but challenges for maybe twelve hours.
>>15135957
I'd been getting sidetracked with getting through the first game myself. Thankfully I did manage to get through it, and partway into the second half of the second game before going out of town. Finished getting all the Dusty Token rewards about an hour before I left home Monday before last. Still going to have three days when I get back to finish trying to get all the furniture. Probably going to have even more tokens when I get back, assuming my treasure clues managed to get to anyone. I'd been working those for like two weeks straight (some being my own random chest finds, even), and only on the last day or so did I start seeing any messages that another player had used my images to find stuff. Makes me wonder if there's a backlog of those that it has that sort of turn around, or if my server is just that sparse these days.

>A real shame how Sony has treated it, a game they never bothered to promote, didn't even show it's E3 trailer at E3, and sneaked onto store shelves to be ignored.
Sony is pretty stupid, really. Even if some games are niche, if they own the rights to them, you'd think they'd want to be able to at least get their bang for their buck investment-wise. Instead, they have a tendency to drop series (possible series, in some cases) after a generation, if not a single game or two and proceed to do fuck all with them, and have even taken to dumping things that should have remained exclusive (if you own a line of systems, and a set of games, why wouldn't you want to keep them exclusive?) into mobile hell like they're just not worthy of Sony's own systems anymore. And then with Gravity Rush there's both the factor that Sony couldn't be fucked to give the remaster a decent print size (out here anyhow), and then tried to shut off the servers for Gravity Rush 2 after only about a year, as if to say they've had that little faith in it.
>I hope for its own future it gets one last patch to allow the players to unlock the dusty token content offline.
Would be nice, but that would require effort that Sony may not want to clear the studio to do. I was personally hoping maybe in the future a sort of "NG+" with all the tokens on a save file could be shared around (assuming CFW for PS4s can get around save file locks like the PS3), but I've heard that there's no NG+ plus mode anyhow, so sharing a file with all the tokens wouldn't help anyone new playing.
>Even if it's small side stuff, it's still important and part of what made the whole game something truly outstanding.
Agreed, though I'll admit my own experience has been limited since I just got into the games recently. But I really wish that predominantly single player games would stop having content that one could say goes towards one-hundred percenting tethered to a server being available. Also don't really get why they had costumes tied to it, Namely because Kat's other clothes from GR1 can be carried over as save bonuses, though admittedly those ones were from former DLC. Also, why wouldn't Kat keep the "Work Clothes" on her own? Even if she prefers the Shifter style ones, they struck me as comfy "off the clock" wear more than something she'd want to throw out the moment she got another option. Relegating them to a Dusty Token reward just seems a bit odd from that perspective (obviously they wanted to give some incentives to doing the online, but still).
At least you can still find treasure chests on your own, rare though they might be. Though, Ive seen it debated whether or not those will still be around once the servers are dead. Best tell might be for someone to see how they handle (if they handle) with their PS4's internet disconncted.

I agree, I don't think the GR2 servers are particularly demanding or expensive, and with the PS4 having so many successes - I think it's not even a question to fund smaller games with that success, guaranteeing support for older ones going forward. I'm not opposed to franchises being "dropped" as in no more games being made in that franchise, I sort of follow the Treasure design philosophy of don't do sequels, explore everything fully in the idea before moving on - and I think it would benefit the industry if everyone followed that idea.
I think Sony is making a massive mistake by not embracing their Japanese games and studios more closely as the trends are showing that not just SP games, but Japanese SP games are on a massive upswing, with things like all the Yakuza games obliterating expectations.
As for why Kat wouldn't just keep things like the work clothes, it might honestly just be a matter of a lack of time. They probably wanted to make totally unique outfits for every dusty token reward but lacking time they just recycled content. I personally find that unlocking nipples to be something that should be unlocked. More reward once you realize what was gone.

Nice hyperbole. If you'd said that GR1 is more consistently good then I would have agreed, but don't see how it's possible to hate one and love the other, they're very similar at the end of the day.
I don't think the problem with GR2 lies with JPL, precisely, personally, I thought the marketplace area was one of the best in the game. Rather it's that there was never supposed to be a GR2 in the first place; the first game was rushed out to meet the Vita's release, which forced a lot of content to be cut or reworked. There was supposed to be another city after Hekseville which can be still be seen above Neu Hiraleon, and you were obviously supposed to receive the panther power in the penultimate mission. If that final city was Eto where the loose threads would be tied up that doesn't leave enough content on its own for a GR2, which is why I think we got Jirga Para Lhao. Then there's also the fact that the developers clearly felt pressured to add a lot more content for a big budget console release, there's probably as many good missions in GR2 as there are in 1, but there are so many more that are simply tedious. I'm still not sure if it's strictly a matter of quality either, GR2 is filled with detail and charm, but it outstays its welcome, 40 hours is way too long for an action platformer.
If not caring once you reached Hekseville means that you didn't finish the game then you should definitely go back to it. I was also feeling burnt out by the end, but both the Hekseville ending and epilogue are absolutely phenomenal. They reach heights that the first game couldn't have dreamt of, making the issue of which game is better a lot more complicated.

Yeah, that set an incredibly nasty precedent. It's the first step in a chain reaction that will lead to Japan just not making games like OLZ anymore. If console manufacturers feel emboldened to block games that offend SJWs, the Japanese devs looking to hit it big in the west will just stop making those kind of games, and even importing won't save us when there's nothing to import. I'm sure a bunch of goons will see this post and cry about slippery slopes, but they said the same thing about horse armor, Bravely Default's censorship, and 90 other things that turned out exactly as we feared, so fuck them.
As for the original subject of the thread, the precedent of single player games getting fucked over by online shit is nothing new. Future generations will despise emulating games from the PS3 and onwards because they won't get to play it with the game's full functionality. For example, Dragon's Crown will lose the ability to go online someday, and retro gamers of the future will never know the simple joys of slaughtering a killer rabbit with random people you might never see again when you head back to town.

Once you've unlocked all of the areas you will get 8 treasure hunts for each of the 8 regions: Lei Colmosna Marketplace and Downtown, Lei Havina, Lei Elgona, Auldnoir, Pleajeune, Endestria, and Vendecentre every 12 hours. With the patched game you earn 80, 50 unpatched, dusty tokens per treasure hunt so 640 tokens per rotation. All of the hard-online required items are unlocked at 6000 dusty tokens, so login in at least once a day and it'll be possible to unlock all of the hard-online required items in 10 days, 5 days if you can login twice a day, probably even sooner since you'll earn extra tokens from challenges and photos as well.
The online dependent items and their dusty token requirements are:
>10 tokens - Upside-Down Man photo prop
>100 tokens - Salute Gesture
>300 tokens - Worker Outfit
>500 tokens - 'Miner's Technique' Talisman
>1000 tokens - Traffic Cone prop
>2000 tokens - School Uniform 1.0 Outfit
>3000 tokens - 'Fisherman's Recipe' Talisman
>4000 tokens - 'You There' Gesture
>5000 tokens - Shifter 1.0 Outfit
>6000 tokens - 'Unlimited Potential' Talisman
Pics related except for the last showcase the online necessary items. The unlimited talisman grants infinite shifting and the other two talismans offer no unique abilities and it's possible to recreate them from grinding in the gravity mines.
Other 'soft' online items are found as rewards for finding treasure chests are furniture decorations for Kat's house, posing gestures, photo props, and talismans. They are 'soft' online dependent because it's possible for these hidden treasure chests to spawn offline, but unlike the online event the chests are not spawned near you and they do not make a pinging noise when you get close to them. This makes them very difficult to find naturally as you're zooming around the open world so it would require very heavy offline grinding to unlock the 'soft' items. All talismans offer no unique abilities and can all be manually recreated from gravity mine grinding.

The dusty token rewards weren't supposed to be a grind, you could easily get everything playing at a casual pace, I think I finished the game with 10-12k. Gravity Rush 2 is my favorite game in about a decade, followed by the first one. But I'm too much of a shitter to actually beat the mine. Doesn't help that I can only try like twice a day. I really wish all the online content wasn't even there. Sharing photos is nice, but getting points for them doesn't need to be online. Challenging other players is nice, but you should be able to get tokens just by beating certain times. I figure at least I can still try the mines after the servers go down, and the only online stuff I ever find down there is my own stuff from the last time I died anyway. But I wish I could just retry as much as I wanted.
Still, all that is basically endgame stuff anyway. The actual game is single player and great. It just gets dragged down a bit by online stuff. I don't get people saying it's not as good as the first, either. More content isn't bad. I liked the expanded upgrade system, even though the talismans aren't really something I ever felt I had to pay attention to. I liked how JPL was arranged more vertically. The only part I thought dragged was the ending, which the rest of you seem to like. The story is neat and everything but I felt the parts where you're just walking around the castle and not doing actual gameplay went on way too long.
The main thing I like about this series though is that it's one of the only modern games that seems to realize that movement itself should be fun. Far too many modern games forget that. Just moving around here, even with nothing to do, is a lot of fun. If the game was nothing but a scavenger hunt for gems scattered around the place, it would still be fun. And of course that aspect is there, but there's a lot more on top of it.

All the DLC was free when they could have charged for costumes, the last chapter, upgrade currency etc, the DLC chapter was free and the online functions do not require PS+.

I kinda doubt we will? I feel like a few games sort of explored the floating islands concepts but none did it as intimately as gravity rush all while maintaining a sense of speed and freedom. Gravity Rush is a game which at times evokes the care free feel of the Mega Man Legends games and Tail Concerto and doesn't hesitate to lay around little details in the world which end up evoking imagery that wouldn't be alien to Silent Hill (which was one Toyama's games before getting picked up by Sony)
In some sense I'm happy that this type of game is also one of the best of its kind. Gravity Rush is a truly unique experience and the sequel alone was a miracle that never should have happened. Also if you missed out on some of the imagery around the locales in Gravity Rush, take a closer look at some of the monitors, the signage, statues, etc. There's a surprising amount of environmental story telling at work there.

To be fair, a character that can kill people in real life would be pretty powerful. That's why Evil Otto is the most powerful video game character of all time.
But you raise a legitimate point that since Sony's franchises typically do have more in the way of story than Nintendo franchises, their crossover game should have had more story to it. Instead it had even less story than an average fighting game. They could have done cool stuff like have the entire event organized by Calypso from Twisted Metal, using the Dimensionator from Ratchet & Clank to grab people from different universes, but then at the end we find out he's actually being mind controlled with the Cortex Vortex from Crash Bandicoot, but actually Cortex is being controlled by Specter from Ape Escape with a Pipo Helmet. But no, we got nothing. Polygon Man could have worked for a story, too. The original mascot coming to get these characters that overshadowed him Robbit from Jumping Flash should have been in. He was pretty much intended as the mascot game when first released. But no, it's like they plain ran out of time before they could implement story.
Also, I'm pretty sure that through a series of acquisitions, Sony technically owns Q*Bert. So he should be in, too.

They could have made something that involved 3D platforming, 3D combat, maybe a bit of shooting or RPG elements and like, anything that could fit in a 3D format, since most PlayStation games are always 3D
The story focus in PlayStation games could have also led to a story mod or more character interactions, specially with the variety of characters you can get

The whole thing looks like it was made by ripping the models from their games and just dumping them all in one place (might as well call it XNALara All-Stars) so I imagine story was very low on their to-do list. At least Smash has a somewhat consistent colorful look even if the art styles are distinct like Mario and Zelda.

The PlayStation All-Stars brand was probably intended to be a wide banner with lots of different types of games under it, like Sega All-Stars sorta was. I imagine Battle Royale referred to the Smash Bros ripoff, but they also intended to do racing games and such. But of course they never got that far.
I don't hate the idea of a Smash Bros ripoff. People had been talking about it for years. It's easy and it makes sense. But they fucked it up in very obvious ways, namely the dumb combat system which obviously only existed as a feeble attempt to claim they're not a Smash Bros ripoff, which was never going to work. That and having terrible character selection, which is honestly probably a bigger problem when it comes to sales and therefore sequel potential.

I don't even mind the characters clashing, though. Fair enough. Parappa the Rapper meeting Nathan Drake is going to be dumb, so embrace the dumbness. That's fine. Use that humor in situations like having Sly and Drake meet and show how they're actually very similar characters despite one being deliberately cartoony and one aiming strongly for realism. And IIRC they actually did that one in their penultimate battles in story mode, but there should have been a lot more like that.
Embrace the weirdness of it. Last of Us was about to come out. They knew they were going to market it like hell. Half the characters in the game are only there to market third party games anyway, like Donte, so fine, have Joel and Ellie be the Ice Climbers duo ripoff.

I wouldn't say that some models were taken from their games, because some felt more like just awful recreations, which was the case for Parappa and Spike
Doesn't also help that some characters like Spike and Dante weren't represented properly

It's more that you walk slowly through them with nothing happening for significant portions of the game.

Even then one of the screenshots (bottom left) is obviously the MC about to fight 3 other samurai, and in context many of these screenshots are directly before/after action happening. Like before, I get what you mean, but this isn't a good way to compare these games.

If they ever do make a PSASBR2 (fuck that was a headache) I'd like to see a lot of banter between characters. I think that would be fun. Never even touched the first but i know Kitten is playable on the Vita port.
