Bullshit, the battles in the existing games are nothing at all like real historical battles nor is the campaign map gameplay.
They could easily make a more "arcade" ww1 experience just as the have with their other titles, after ww1 then it's certainly impossible, they could maybe go CoH but that wouldn't be TW anymore, but WW1 is perfectly possible, it'd be napoleon but with more firepower and defensive structures, planes and tanks could be special units like in TWW, artillery could be off battle map support like in Fall of the Samurai and other than that you'd control your regiments in the field like usual, just with a loose formation, i honestly don't see the problem at all.
Have field battles change with time like siege battles do in Attila, since each army is essentially siegeing each other, it's all there.
I really thought they'd go for it due to the war's centenary, who asked for three kingdoms?
Early modern is 30 years war and such, think a bridge in time between Medieval and Empire, with religious wars, royal families, colonization, nationalism, trade, etc.
Infinitely more interesting periods than bronze age chinks, that game looks like a mod for attila or something

I struggle to think what army didn't fight in some kind of formation. Assyrians, Persians and Babylonians did as far back as 2000 BC. Maybe Gauls and Celts? But even they quickly learned from the Romans (just not quickly enough) and became tougher opponents as time went on.
My guess is that you'd have to go into nigger Africa to find a people that didn't train to fight in formation. Battles were already a clusterfuck anyway, keeping the men in some kind of unit with a designated leader made command and control at least manageable to some degree.

Unit like formations that the commander could control on the fly? sure you can tell your captains to take their men to more or less a certain position, but nothing at all like what you see in TW games, the closest you'd get would be the Romans and they were the exception not the rule which was one of the reasons they were so succesful.
Point is TW has always been arcade as fuck, much more than a simulation of how a real battle of the time would go, they could easily make an arcade version of ww1 or the early modern period.

I don't think anyone out here has much of a clue how pre-gunpowder battles were fought. Even with Romans, where we have a lot of surviving texts, especially concerning the military, many concepts still elude historians (like how they switched tired front lines with new troops). They can speculate, but we simply can't recreate the mindset that governed such people, and thus have no idea how these battles actually went down.
