The SNES trilogy is defintely the peak of franchise. IV is great, though linear and will seem dated both mechanically and writing wise, but for 1991 few console RPGs could match its scope besides maybe Phantasy Star. The PSP version is the best.
V is the best FF mechanically, and job system is addictive. I'd say the GBA version is best with the sound and restoration patch as it contains a few new jobs as well. The story is dumb, but again, you play V for its mechanics. Quite possibly the last main line FF that was focused on being a game first, and telling a story second.
VI is best played on SNES with a fan translation that fixes some of the official translation's censorings by Nintendo (and the GBA version is basically a slightly re-tweaked revision of the SNES script). You can also apply other patches that fix some of the game's bugs like the Doom/Vanish glitch.

Do not listen to this nigger
>6 is probably the best and best way to play it is on the GBA
Not with that cramped resolution, and the translation is mostly the same as the SNES version.
>SNES version is uncensored but translation feels like a Saturday morning cartoon at times.
Which means fuck all since you can play a fan translation that's far more accurate than the prior SNES and GBA translation.
OP if you play 6, play the SNES version with the better translation. There's also a few patches that fix some of the game's infamous bugs as well.
>X is also pretty great
Opinion fucking discarded. X is overtly linear trash and is basically a dress rehearsal for XIII.

>playing the same translation as the SNES version but with additional load times
Nigger, you're dumb.
