I was playing Diablo 1 the other day on a whim, and I realized that I had forgotten just how creepy it is. The game evokes a sense of dread and loneliness that I think is really lacking in most games, even those that call themselves "horror" games. Diablo 2, while better mechanically, lost some of the fear in its atmosphere, and the less said about Diablo 3, the better.

Everything in Diablo 1 is built to serve the sinister nature of the atmosphere. The slow walk speed, the complex maps, the floors that become slowly more and more fucked up the deeper you go, the fact that there's no companions. It's just YOU. The perpetual fog of war continually obscures what might be around you. And the fact that the game throws in pic related on fucking floor TWO really drives home that ANYTHING could be around the next corner.

Are there any other games like this? Why have so few games really been able to capture it since?

Have you ever played a game and wondered why you should even keep going?

Not because its bad, but because everything seems hopeless, and the "good guys" (the people you play as) go around killing and slaughtering just because they are vampires and fuck humans.

Everything is dire, the whole land is corrupt, youre only safe in cities and even there corrupt people will prey on the weak and helpless, the land of nosgoth is the most JUST setting in videogames.

For example, in the first game, when you wake up as a vampire, theres literal virgins tied around in your tomb just so that you arent alone in death, these people will yell for help and beg you not to kill them as you walk.

Diablo 1 and 2 are equally great I think. They excel in different areas. 1 has a much better atmosphere and general feel, while 2 has much better gameplay and mechanics. I generally find 2 more fun, but when I get in the mood for diablo 1, NOTHING beats it.

It's always bothered me in the STALKER games how many fucking bullets it takes to put down an enemy. It's got these fairly realistic shooting mechanics but it totally kills immersion for me when you have to shoot an entire magazine into someone's chest before they fall down.

7218ec No.15122531

What would be a more direct means of control in a video game? Certainly not a controller or a mouse and keyboard. The only answer could be VR or motion controls, both of which are gimmicks

>>15122469

The game is built around the movement speed. The only place it feels annoying is in town. In the dungeon it makes sense and even adds to the gameplay, considering how often you have to run away in the early game.

OP YOU DIDN'T MENTION THE SOUNDTRACK AND IT'S REALLY GOOD. Diablo 1 is one of my favorite games because it's fun as hell and just because it has such a fantastic atmosphere and consistent feeling throughout the game, everything you said in the OP is spot on. I'd really be interested in games with a similar atmosphere, or at least something that manages to create a such a strong one like Diablo does. I might try Penumbra or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. like some other anons said.

4c633d No.15122901

>>15120663

While not quite on the same level as what you describe OP, I did get some pretty similar vibes from Tibia many years ago. Crawling around in the dark, deep underground, knowing full well that whatever is ahead of you might be able to kill you in an instant (like that time I got hit by a Fire Elemental that was off-screen and promptly NOPED the fuck out), or the fear that you won't be able to escape if you need to run for your life because you will be severely injured and a swarm of respawned enemies will be waiting for you back the way you came, too numerous to fight and physically capable of blocking your passage out. It's terrifying to go alone.

Latecomers that only played 1.10+ with all the bullshit that was introduced. Game was amazing until then.

I'll add Morrowind to the list. It being my first TES game, I was clueless about the game's established lore. Exploring tombs and fighting undead was spooky as fuck. Looting Daedric Shrines to try and get amazing gear while spamming all your consumables to try and survive. Exploring more tombs and realizing that you're in a god damn vampire lair. And the best for last: Sixth House bases. Extremely creepy, not so much tense or scary. Just… creepy. Especially if you've been reading about Corpus and and have seen the different Corpus monsters around. Can bet your sweet ass I crawled my way through these places and panicking whenever I heard or saw some enemy I hadn't seen before.

Man exploring in that game was magical. A lot of it had to do with there not really being any wikis at the time so you learned about stuff through word of mouth. There were so many moments in the first Tomb Raiders that wouldn't be out of place in a survival horror game. They really were great.

Modern Tomb Raiders are a horror of a different kind, where you can feel the creeping death of cultural marxism, feminism and transgenderism crawling up your spine and infecting your mind when exposed to it.

Oh god yes. I also remember having to try to carry your loot bag back to the bank without someone stealing it since you had to leave it on the ground and just keep throwing it because you had so much shit. Had to put a shitload of bags inside bags to hide where the loot is. Fuck I miss this game so much. I don't think there will ever be something as great as that game again. It's literally impossible now, even ignoring shitty modern business practices. The existence of wikis and macros just kind of ruins it.

f8188d No.15123556

Thief The Dark Project.

First time i started the game, it had the tension of when you were a kid didn't want to be found out in Hide&Seek. Don't know for how long i stood behind the first door on the first level of the mansion just listening in on the foot-steps of the guards walking around. But you overcome that tension and sure, let's do this and you beat the mission, nothing scary just tense. Then you start progressing through the game and you hear fucking zombies while sneaking around in caves, you encounter elementals in underground pyramids, wizards, and those fucking red skeletons in that church where everybody suddenly knows your exact position as you stole the eye. Fuck that, i don't know for how long i just ran to a safe location and stood there, doing nothing. I remember i tried to sneak around doing those mission in that cathedral only to be raped by those red skeletons over and over again and because they are faster than you, you couldn't outrun them either.

I don't think there has ever been such a tense game as Thief.

I can kinda see calling 999 a VN but DR is very much a video game. I'm also not sure what you mean by calling Danganronpa westernized either.

I know some stuff about VNs as well but I'd rather just talk about games.

I guess I'll recommend Famicom Tantei Club Pt2 as well (Embed Related). It establishes and sustains a creepy atmosphere from beginning to end, and makes me wish Nintendo would put out some new stuff that isn't as sanitized/"kiddie".

Half-Life 2, for as much as people shit on it, really does capture an atmosphere of emptiness and oppression. The parts before you get your suit in City 17 almost could have been expanded into a whole game on its own (albeit for a different franchise and genre. But that's more my own craving for dystopian cyberpunk). But the whole game feels like you really are on a dead world, empty villages are all long abandoned, people scraping by in absolute squalor, the distinct Soviet aesthetic to everything. Say what you will about the rest of the game, that aspect was masterfully done.

I agree, the interesting part is that is always seemed to me like a last minute addition to make it fit the more linear gameplay.

Most previous builds and even the multiplayer in the retail feature completely different damage stats as far as I remember. The first thing some of the early mods added was changing the damage of weapons.

Clear Sky and CoP did away with the linear weapon progression and made all damages more realistic.
