Regarding the topic of the thread. I actually liked him quite a lot, but it is easy to see why some people may not liking. He is being build up as the successor of Dante after all, and that doesn't sit up well with everyone. Add to this that DMC4 was unfinished and Dante got to replay Nero's levels in reverse, fight the same bosses with the exception of the Saviour, which means that Nero not only fights 3 more bosses than Dante, he fights probably the best two in the game (Dante and Credo), and many people were decrying him as an inferior replacement for Dante. Doesn't help Dante's personality in this games was fantastic, and he has many great moments in contrast with Nero.
What some people dislike about him, but I actually quite like, is that while he is cocky and reasonable crazy, he is inexperienced and a bit emotionally unstable, and it shows through the game. His inability to finish off Demons, how he gets flustered with Trish in disguise, his little celebrations whenever he does something cool and other moments of the like. His romantic story can also tip off many people, but I find it to be nice. Kyrie although cute, is not very well developed (still, the moments she share with Nero at the end of the game are very sweet) and it is kind of a cliche motivation for the protagonist. Doesn't help that Nero's backstory is poorly explained, like the fact that he just got that arm relatively recently before the events of DMC4 (which I think is explain in the instruction manual of the game) nor his fear of being seem as a pariah for it, which considering that he doesn't quite fit in his community anyways just makes him even more insecure. The guy probably goes to imageboards to vent and complain about normalfags. Funny enough, he actually has quite in common with Sparda, as he is the only descendent that actually falls in love with a human woman. I also love the interactions between him and Dante. They speak few times, but somehow each time it feels significant and believable. It is pretty well done.
Gameplay wise his problem is that he is a little too simple, compared with Dante. He is very fun to play, but not quite at the level of Dante. DMC5 is a good chance to expand upon his unique fighting style and moveset.

When Credo dies, he clearly shows pity for him, and decide to follow his dying wish, the third and final encounter with Nero you can see that emotional side of his in his body language and the things he says. You get to play the real Dante more in the game than Snake from MGS2, even if it is going through the same levels and bosses that Nero goes through, so it was kind-of redundant gameplay wise but had a similar outcome. Nero was added as the "railroad" to git gud in DMC4. In Easy and Normal you can Buster, but on the higher difficulties it's no longer that easy. The revolver charge I honestly like, since switching between guns and melee with Dante always feels clunky due to his movement speed dropping to a walk when you start shooting.
With Nero it's buffered while fighting, then when you get distance you pull off the triple charge shot and then get back to closing in to fight with melee. It allows you to keep fighting at a higher intensity, making it more fun. Same reason I never use Ebony and Ivory(even though I adore their design) and prefer Coyote-A/Shotgun; it lets me pull off a charged shot at a good spot to keep fighting with the part of the kit that I like.

I hated how slow nero was to play. Playing DMC 3 and then playing as nero was like going from mach 5 speed and slowing all the way down to first gear. Even getting all his shit wasn't nearly enough to make him any fun to play, especially since his gun and all of his attacks were more about charging and playing slower than Dante. After I got past the shitshow that was the dante fight and destroyed sactus, I revved all the way back up to speed and then I got right back to nero's segments. DMC 4 seems more about the Bloody Palace than the actual game, but playing through wasn't unbearable.
DmC was a shitshow and absolutely does not deserve any legs up on any devil may cry game or any character from them; 2, from what I played, is still above that pile of muck. Saying Nero is worse than Donte is a shit opinion to have, because nero at least had a fun gimmick that led to flashing lights on-screen.

People didnt like Nero because he took attention away from Dante, had a weak arc and little motivation except muh Kyrie.
That said, he is considerably better than Donte, and some people dont like Nuro because of the artstyle change and character redesign

Does anyone have that pre-Special Edition DMC4 video where that guy is constantly switching every style ever mid combo in midair to Mechanical Rhythm from Xenoblade Chronicles?
