I consider the starter choices to be Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, Fire Emblem 7: Blazing Sword, and Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones. It all depends on what you're interested in. If you want to get attached to the characters easily and enjoy the story, I'd recommend Sacred Stones. If you want the most streamlined and balanced gameplay experience, I'd recommend Fire Emblem 7: Blazing Sword. If you want the utmost basics and have already played a few JRPGs, I'd recommend Mystery of the Emblem. I'd consider ones like Geneology of the Holy War and Radiant Dawn to be played last on the list, at least until you've played a couple others first. I'd also consider them to be the Fire Emblem games the fewest amount of fans have played, so they come up in discussion sparsely.

It's really not that complicated unless you want to really powergame. In my experience, you have to almost deliberately fuck up your pairings to have a bad second generation, and even then it's not difficult. You only really need 3-4 good units to clear the game anyway.

Agreed, but it can be a bit staggering at times, I've always considered Geneology to have the highest entry skill ceiling in terms of shit you need / are required to know. Thracia is definitely more difficult from a pure gameplay perspective, but Geneology just feels archaic at times and it can become a chore to play. It wouldn't be as highly regarded if it didn't have it's signature writing and story already miles higher than any Fire Emblem game. At least in my opinion. It's definitely not a bad game or impossible like he's claiming, it's just lethargic in all senses.

Shining Force is more JRPG than FE is. You have town wandering and buying equipment and talking to people. The first games were made by the people who made Golden Sun, and they feel quite similar, right down to the way you interact with people.

I would also have to add Disgaea and Utawarerumono series. Both are good TRPG series with Disgaea having tons of depth and Uta having a great story to go along with the good gameplay.
Disgaea doesn't have a good story but it makes up for it by having some of the best gameplay when it comes to Tactical RPGs. People will tell you it's all about grinding (you don't have to do this until post game and even then it's a small amount if you play smartly) but it's actually about breaking the game through bullshit strategies and team combinations. I would recommend 4 on the Vita. Make sure to buy used or pirate because NISA.
The first Uta is a eroge on PC and you don't have to play that to get into the newer games on PS4 and Vita. The one to start with is Mask of Deception as Mask of Truth is the sequel. And if you are going to play it, then prepare for lots of reading because it's also a visual novel.
