The always online stunt is the primary reason the Xbone lost this gen.

Sony will release a PS5 that is just a more powerful PS4, and which is backwards compatible with all past Playstation games via a streaming subscription service. They will continue to copy Nintendo in any way possible while pretending it's new, AKA the Apple approach to innovation and design.

MS will end up forging some kind of partnership with a chink company to expand their market in to China while continuing to build their GamePass™ bullshit to try and be the Netflix of games.

Nintendo will realise they hit paydirt with the Switch and make another more powerful version, fully backwards compatible, and their subscription service will offer their back catalogue of retro games instead of selling individual Virtual Console titles. Other than that they won't change much. They will branch out with offering partnerships to more third parties to use Nintendo franchises in both tie ins (like Fox in Starlink) or outright niche genre games (like Hyrule Warriors).

Outside of tentpole titles exclusive to platforms, third party titles will become less demanding so they can be spread more evenly across consoles, PC, and even Switch and mobile (since Switch is basically Android hardware anyway).

Google will finally release their gaming console and it will be a shitty streaming box with the kind of always on big brother shit that Microsoft could only dream of. And still nobody will buy it.

Consoles will be region locked again as mandated by EU's shithole internet laws. Any attempt to access a foreign IP address on a VPN will result in a hardware ban and bricked system.

This gen was so bad I don't think I would even bother getting another console, but here's what I think is coming:

At best we will see 3DS/DS games get ported to the Switch and perhaps you can flip the Switch vertically in tabletop mode to have both screens in the correct position. Party chat killed my enjoyment of online games. Before, I enjoyed COD solely because it took so little effort to make people rage (teamkilling, stealing care package, cornertrapping, etc). Now, however, everyone is in their own party chat, making every match feel like i play against bots. In my opinion, Game chat should be forced in every lobby, becausr party chat is cancer.

I actually think Nintendo has a shot at being THE console for the first time since the early 90's. Switch is doing well. Sony and Microsoft are both kind of floundering. Another thing I could see happening is Microsoft possibly trying to become a first AND third party publisher, teaming up with Nintendo or Valve or whoever to put some of their exclusives on the Switch and PC to have crossplay with the Xbox versions, but not having anything to do with Sony for obvious reasons. It seems a bit farfetched, but it sounds like that's the direction Microsoft is trying to go. Making headway by putting their software on every platform besides PlayStation including their own, instead of fighting the uphill battle with their own hardware and walled garden. That might make their hardware not sell good, but it would definitely help their software sales, it's a risky and ambitious prospect and I'd quite admire it if it actually came to fruition.

"Xbox" won't exist anymore. The next "Xbox" is going to be the equivilent to a Steam Machine. It's going to be a PC with a version of Windows that functions like Steam's Big Screen. They themselves cannot figure out why they still make Xbox anymore, and they're trying to run the Windows 10 marketplace now anyway. It'd just be supporting their own marketplace. This is probably the thing most likely to happen, due to their own statements, and how they've been "testing the waters". When they began releasing new Gears of War games on Windows 10, it was clear they were preparing. They'll under perform because they'll have a small base and their primary competitor will be Steam.

The next Playstation will come out so late that it may not even be considered part of the next gen, but the generation after that. Sony has the PS4 in so many homes right now, and their PS4 Pro scheme was eaten right the fuck up. They'll just make more sequels of their own IPs. Their drive to bring new features to a console will drop when Microsoft "technically" drops consoles (but not really). Any big announcements would probably be VR related. They probably won't release a new handheld because mobile gaming has become a giant they cannot compete with anymore, so they'll just release more gayming phones.

The next Nintendo is a wild card and I won't pretend to have any idea what they'll do. They'll probably release a console that's as strong as the current gen and backwards compatible with the Switch (to compete with the number of PS4s out there that will still be supported). They'll call it something gay like the Switcharoo. The Switcharoo will simultaneously completely replace their handheld division as they merge into one platform. They'll eventually release and support Labo VR, where you fold a box into a head mount to rest the screen on while you hold a controller and play games in (probably optional) VR. This would seem like their most logical course of action, because it'd consolidate all of their games whilst competing against the PS4 Pro. On the other hand, they're just as liable to release another waggler, so, whatever.

Fucking yes, IV blew my mind at the time it came out. Same with Crysis. And FO3. Sprawling open worlds. Fully dynamic physics. The ability to save literally as you were in the spot which you stood, rather than set/load some parameters at fixed points across a game world's map. 10 years later and they're still up there as the most technically advanced games of all time, rivalled only by their successors and contemporaries.
