I want to play SH3 and I want it to be as stable as possible. What version should I get? It's on sale on steam and I can torrent anything I can find. Are there any unofficial patches? Is there a GoG version?

I've never actually played it unmodded because a friend of mine insists to play Grey Wolves or whatever it was called, should I try it vanilla?

Are any of the other SH games worth playing?

Oh, and are there any other sub sims worth playing? Cold Waters' m&b style dual map system pissed me off.

believe it or not i actually just reinstalled this a couple months ago on my win7 machine. in short, short of getting an XP machine up and running solely for older games (something i recommend) no, you will not be able to run this in a stable, working way. the biggest problem i found was that it can't handle higher resolutions, since it fucks really badly with the periscope and at best makes using it a nuisance and at worst makes it totally and completely unusable. there are workarounds that i tried, but all of them were unreliable (likely because I have a 3-monitor setup, your mileage may vary). i eventually gave up

grey wolves however is a decent mod, adds a lot of historical fluff that wasn't present in the main game and also adds way more selectable subs, but since i couldn't get terribly far due to the obscenely annoying resolution/periscope issues i couldn't tell you if it makes it a far better game overall. no, in my opinion none of the other SH games are worth playing; they all lack that particular je ne sais qoui that made sh3 everyone's favorite, and the later ones add ubishit uplay bullshit

Get the Grey Wolves modpack, it fixes most bugs and allows you to get the most interesting expansion mods.

Just go hang around on subsim, you'll find what you need, depending on how autistic you want to go with it. Asking so specifically is like asking to wear another man's suit.

One of the versions I had pirated had GWX pre-installed, so that was nice. I just completed my second patrol (listed as third because I docked at a supply ship) with a total of only about 15,000 tons sunk. I'm doing a 1939 start in 2nd flotilla so I don't have any radar or anything. Should I get a type IX or stick with my VIIB until more advanced hulls are available?

I've been just eyeballing torpedoes by adjusting based on the FCS screen (f6 I think). Is this a bad habit? Should I be identifying shit and calculating the speed and angle and having it programmed based on that? Also, am I meant to do search patterns? Currently I find some place on the route map that should have high traffic, make a zigzag route through it on low speed, and every time my batteries top out I dive to use the hydrophone until they're at 50%.

Again, subsim. There are numerous tutorials on TDC and AoB business, also quite a bit on just utube at this point, I believe.

Stick to the VIIs. They are super comfy and can do most things you want them to do just fine.

I like to do an all or nothing approach when it comes to firing solutions. I either let the AI do it for me 100%, or do it all by myself.

Ultimately it comes down to the same thing.

The more challenging part isn't calculating the actual solution. That's easy trigonometry and most of it can be found in some table. You can even make an excel spreadsheet that does it for you.

The real difficulty comes from using your limited sensors to actually gather all the data required.

You need to know the target's mast height to use the stadimeter to get the distance to target, then use the angle to the target over time to determine speed and course. But all of this depends on the identity of the craft and how precisely you used the stadimeter, or how good you are at guessing distances.

Last time I tried playing this it kept crashing on return from your first patrol mission. Maybe I should try to play it again on my loonix.

I love playing with a type II sub and taking it out beyond range of base and going on a suicide mission hunting BB's.
