Wrong in a few regards, my understanding isn't probably the best but it's a bit more complex than that.

Mario does not hold objects so much as he holds object slots - if he grabs a box that was marked as object slot 36, then the game despawns that box but makes a note of the slot mario holds, and in normal behaviors will respawn a box next to Mario's position when he throws or drops it. The HOLP updates whenever Mario holds an object and stops updating whenever he releases an item. He enters CCM, grabs the penguin, and releases it at a specific XYZ co-ordinate that carries over to any other map in the game. The HOLP only updates to a new co-ordinate when Mario picks up another item, or the console is turned off, and the HOLP that was set in CCM will be used later in BitFS.

He then proceeds to the top of the stage using the platform raising trick, but in order to get the platforms (plural - since there's one at the bottom, which is used to gain height, and one near the top, which he needs to stand on later) to return to normal, he has to re-enter the stage, which he does by dying in the bowser room.

He then moves next to the Bob-omb, activates it to move towards him, and on the frames it explodes, grabs it. This causes Mario to be holding an object slot that does not exist, because the Bob-omb that was occupying that slot exploded. The next time an object loads into that specific object slot, Mario will be holding a "cloned" version of that object, that will activate at the HOLP when Mario releases it.

Because the game thinks Mario is holding an empty object slot, the game loads the next spawned item into it. This is a flame that comes from the flame spawner right behind him, and Mario immediately releases it - this causes a flame to move to the top of the pole at 3:06, which burns Mario at the top of the pole and allows him to jump off without an A press.

One oddity about HOLPs is that they only update when Mario is rendered, and when Mario takes damage, he flickers for a second. The frames where he's visible and invisible run on a global timer, meaning by pausing and unpausing repeatedly after taking damage, you can have the gameplay effectively only RUN on frames where Mario is invisible. As he lures the first bob-omb that he clones over to the lava, he takes damage from the shocker, then spams pause so that he has enough time to grab the bobomb (which disappears), for it to be replaced by a fire clone, and for him to release it at the HOLP. He then grabs another bobomb and clones it so he can carry it down to the red coin cage star, to get the red coin in the corner (the second one collected). He then proceeds through the course normally as you see, using the fire clone on the pole to avoid pressing A.

At 3:50 he needs to stand on the top platforms to clone the star. He grabs an exploding bob-omb again, then moves towards the 8th red coin. You can see his held object become a flame briefly, then the game unloads the flame - at which point he collects the 8th coin and spawns the star. The star spawns into the object slot that Mario is "holding", and so he spawns a clone of the Star at Mario's position.

The reason they call it a half A press is because in some situations that press is rounded up (one extra press in order to hold it down in an individual level) or rounded down since it's simply held down from the last one (a full game run). In order to describe this they need a term, since a level might require two presses to do individually but only add one to the overall challenge route, thus to keep track of this, they call it a "half" press. I could hold down A through three whole levels. In the whole game run it's a single A press, while in the single segment levels it's counted as 1 A press per level. For the ABC videos, they sort of count for both, because it is usually a video of a single level, but it could also be in the context of a full game run, especially when setup outside the level is involved. It's useful to know these sorts of things, so that's why they came up with the term.
