I bought KI on the steam summer sale but it seemed to be a mistake as no one's playing it except the guys who have already logged years on it.
I've followed this game since it was announced, I was excited for it but after IG acquired it my interest gradually faded because it was clear they weren't going to fix any of the game's problems and just kept on adding more of them. Rash was a cool guest character but the other two don't sit well with me. I thought at most only two guests made sense for KI, which were Rash and Joanna Dark from Perfect Dark. But she never showed up and instead we got a stabby boss from Gears of War who died in the first game and the Orbiter from Halo.
Some of this game's original characters are pretty trash too. I mean how many creepy horror-themed girls do you need in a game? They were really phoning it in with their own character designs.

Urien's dark skinned even outside "battle mode", it's just that he taps into the full power of melanin to channel the strength of kangs (it's no coincidence his first stage was in Egypt and the theme is called 'Afro'). But incidentally, it's funny you bring this up because about a hour ago, it struck me to go look around and see if anyone dumped the entire gallery of AE endings. Best I could find was http://www.sfgalleries.net/art/sf5/sf5/ which is a surprise because IIRC this site's a borderline relic by now.
Anywho, it's interesting to note that the endings all seem to be a shitty Udon re-imagining of older endings (that Urien one is his Second Impact ending) while the special illustrations are a lot of legacy illustrations because Capcom can't promise 300+ anything without the smell of bullshit in the air but a lot of the original ones are pretty nice and almost all from Japanese artists.

I hope I didn't make any egregious errors in spending my money. Already had GG, but the others are what I bought yesterday.
While I'm asking for buying advice, help me with a moral quandary: I'm a PC player and I want to play DoA5 because it looks cool now that I know how fighting games work. However, the PC port is missing a couple stages and lacks a few graphical embellishments like the Soft Engine and good particle effects. Team Ninja is also apparently a group of cowards and bootlickers, which makes me hesitant to give them my money.
On the other hand, there don't seem to be any torrents of this game (because it's minced into a million pieces of character DLC and costumes) and it's on sale for about half off, which is a better deal than I'm likely to see for a while. My purchase may also send Team Ninja the message that I like DoA5 and not DoA6 when they look at the Steam analytics.
Am I thinking about this too much?

As far as I know, the PC version is a straight Arcade "port". It has the "Soft Engine" but not the updated version made for the current gen consoles. I wouldn't say "cowards" when talking about DOA5 or PC version, just "lazy" since the arcade version already runs on a modified Windows machine so it's a lot easier to put that version on Steam than redo the stuff you made on PS4/Xone devkits. The loobies thing is kind of fucked up though. Can't you invite someone to play on a 1 vs 1 lobby or you have to rely on ranked for everything?

Last gen versions also don't feature the updated Soft Engine or the new stages. They don't even feature the last two DLC characters, Naotora and Mai. It's a similar setup: two main buttons with long autocombo routes, C is for universal overhead/sweep, characters are very simplified compared to their normal incarnations. The DLC is pretty jewish, too, but given how buggy the game is I don't expect you'll need to worry about that very long.

You have to keep in mind that you won't have the usual target combo/link of L->M->H those games usually have. In KOF you go for the Normal -> command normal -> special move/super. In later KOFs, you can supercancel a special move or in games like XI, XIII and XIV, you can cancel your super move with a higher level super.

Personally I'm not a fan of that new mechanic that goes into a cinematic RPS and apparently neither is anyone halfway competent with the game if all the footage I saw is of any indication. No, that was the point. I have a huge collection of those mobages but would never bother with one, I don't even know how they play out. Besides the occasional good design, those titles are quality art magnets (even if just by sheer numbers) and as a glancer of boorus and Pixiv, it just gets impossible to ignore at some point.
But I did use to play games for waifus, I guess Souls/Yakuza broke that. A good looking grill still catches my eye but I've learned to control that impulse.

From what my experience so far; The first 5 decks are really well balanced and everyone can uses them no problem/not many flaws. As for the remaining 10 decks, some decks work better with certain characters (doesn't mean they aren't entirely useless to certain characters) Every decks feels pretty ridiculous if you manage to get the whole thing active, but the ones that are the most bullshit set you in a really dangerous position if you try trigger the whole thing. Overall it feels like everything is more situational apposed to match up comparisons.
IMO the best decks overall are Juggernaut, Infinity and Nightmare (as long as it's not used with a zoner or against a zoner). Double Face is also ridiculously good, but you have throw a round on purpose to see it's true bullshit.

It's basically the most insane "SF-esque" game ever, since it has a pretty fast walkspeed, but still has dashes and even chain combos. Take that already pretty wild base then throw on the Gougi system, which allows for a decent amount of freedom in playstyle and making a character play how you like and it's both fun to play but also very, very broken. It's kind of like a modern Breakers Revenge, Fighter's History Dynamite, or even Akatsuki Blitzkampf, it wears what it is on its sleeve but isn't afraid to have stupid shit in there too, which is especially refreshing when most fighting game series nowadays are aiming for refined gameplay without many "design faults".

I'm not really too sure. There aren't many that I've tried or played very extensively. Garou seems kind of cool, but I don't know if I like how combos would work what with all the feint canceling. I haven't given Guilty Gear a proper chance, mostly because the button layouts feel weird to me. The soundtrack is fucking radical though so I definitely wanna check it out. I've played a little bit of Soul Calibur 2 and really enjoy it, even though I don't know what I'm doing too much. It has parries, good movement, and doesn't seem to be long combo/wall-rape oriented like Tekken.
I really wish I could say what I was looking for in a fighting game, but I can't even accurately describe what I like so much about 3rd Strike. I like how parries work and how there's nothing too complex to do/deal with. I also don't know why I like to play Alex. There isn't much that's too great about him and he's pretty disadvantaged all the time. It's definitely satisfying find new ways to make due with what you have, finding some of his hidden strengths, and his moves are pretty cool.

SCVI's stages are a mixed bag so far, on one hand, a bunch of plain forests and fields with nothing going on for it and on the other, you got Sophitia's stage that looks like it came straight from Lord of the Rings. Too many to list, they're basically completely different games with different balance, mechanics (though both are what you could call fundamental KOF), rosters, etc.
I personally find KOF02 to not be fun at all to play, though worth trying to see how you feel, and KOF02UM may just be my favorite KOF game period, next to both versions of 98. here's hoping there proved to be enough interest in it nowadays for it to get updated with rollback netcode

Great game, even with the balance not being the best each character feels great to play and the assists can be as deep or shallow as you want. The netplay isn't very alive though you can find matches on a discord. I personally found just playing against the AI and mashing with friends on it to be fun enough so I never even bothered with the netplay.

Are you sure? I mean what are the examples you think are overlaping? The two new characters are a grappler and a TKD fighter. And it is nothing like SF with four head swaps in one game. So far none of the characters have similar fighting styles, and some have bigger movesets than others too, but it is being developed by one guy. That is a huge ordeal for one person.

Can't rightly say, dunno much of the project and I'm still a bit confused with this because I remember the initial project, dunno if it split in two or the first was discarded. I remember that one had dudes and some Aikido chick with a gun. Anyway, there's like 4 chicks in a gi (Shotos and MK ninjas so fair enough), 3 huge South American looking ones, 2 TKD ones, the buff nip and the one that looks like she's gonna ask to speak with the manager have similar builds and now that one with the juumonji yari looks like its built around the model of the chainsaw chick. Looking at all that, the idea of asset re-using isn't too farfetched. Not saying that's a bad thing per se, especially for a one man independent project.

This game uses some characters from S2G, like the Buff Japanse Mitsuko, Chainsaw Ripper, and the TKD girl with the cleavage She used to have a different costume, I will post it here.
The big girl with body painting is one of his characters, she is an Amazon girl, she is not from South America. The Jumonji-yari girl is a sister of the chainsaw lady, so, that is the reason I guess. The girl with the gun will use Muay Thai, the one with the rose is Sumo.
But since he released the patreon he decided to allow some people to add their OCs for the game. The girl with the black gi, is an OC of his writer, the TKD girl with full dobok is an OC of the main artist, the pink haired girl is an OC of one of his friends, and, as I said, the Brazilians are my OCs.
So, yeah, his old project is not dead, and many girls are from different creators.
But yeah, the game does have plenty of OCs, but, in general, I think the game still works visually.
I think it could be seen as a weird way to develop a game, but at least he was smart enough to not allow any green kangaroos into it.
By the way, the black Brazilian is really a big girl, but the other Brazilian is really short, just more strong. The big girl uses moves based on sports, while the smaller one is a grappler.

Eh, besides being able to do SDMs(higher level supers) and HSDMs(supers that you can only do with 1/4 of health) outside of MAX mode, and therefore, regular supercancels into SDMs there aren't many differences between the systems. Now of course the balance is drastically different as the presentation (visuals, stages, music) and the additions to many characters (2 literal clones of Kyo, Shingo, King, Kasumi, Jhun, Xiangfei, Bao, Hinako, Lin, Foxy and Heidern)and K9999 deleted from the franchise being replaced by Nameles plus alternate versions of Robert, Kensou and Takuma. If you include the 7 boss characters, it is still the biggest roster KOF ever had both XIV and 2002UM have 58 tournament viable characters..
So, unless you really loved the additions and (H)SDMs or hate Athena, Choi, Billy and Angel or really really hate Vanessa (wtf SNK?) why do you feel that way about vanilla 2002?
As for the tropes cited earlier, sadly, neither Kasumi or Geese who are your token counter based characters are in the vanilla versions of '98 or 2002 so you'll have to deal with Blue Mary who is more of a poke character that has access to some counters. Goro Daimon is a monster in vanilla '98. 2002(UM) Clark might be your jam if you like Alex in 3rd Strike and Ryo has parries as command moves in 2002 onwards. '98 is more simple with grooves and high damage while 2002 is more technical with cancels and combos.

Even if they come from different artists, they still have similar traits, costumes and maybe "silhouettes". I mean, you can't say the ninjas in Mortal Kombat plays the same but also can't deny they look the same in the 2D games. To add, you have two dark haired twintaled characters and their hair being the most prominent characteristics so makes me think if they are related. Also, every character looks to be very fit, serious seasoned figher or some kind of musclebound supersoldier. If you want an all female cast but avoid weebshit although the purple haired chick(along with the other twintail) and kimono girls looks to be inspired from anime or cartoons why not go for the old master trope like Power Instinct or Genkai from YYH? Your blond girl at least had different clothes.
It's just that in a fighting game, first impressions are everything so who cares about the backstory or the reasons that OC has to be in that game? They need to get hooked on immediatly and not feel bored early.

You must be able to see the differences between the characters easily, and while the game might not be close to the levels of Garou or Darkstalkers, it is not bad either. We must remember that this is not a company that have plenty of very talented artists working to create fantastic designs, it is one guy trying to create a game. He is not free of criticism but perspective is important here.
Now, about the muscles, I mean, the game have something five to six female characters that are more muscular than you average female fighter, but we are not talking about something in the level of a female Zangief or Marduk. Many of them are as muscular as a crossfit athlete, too much if compared to a character like Kasumi or Nina Williams, but not really huge. And this is just how he wanted the game to row, girls with more developed bodies to justify their fighting prowess. I see that is personal taste but at least he is not making something that is really ugly or common.
I think that, if there is an opportunity to play in, why not try it? So many people here spent hours on Duty fighter V and Brokken 7 and Injustass 2, why not go for something different from time to time, give it a chance at least.
And I am glad the design for that character was enjoyable. I tried to give her a small connection between Brazil and Germany with her attire. I think it worked.
About the old female master, I do like the idea but we must be honest, no one wants to make that. Genkai from YYH, Sayuri from Senran Kagura and both the Goketsuji and Belti sisters from Power Instinct had the power to get younger, so, no one want old ladies fighting in their games/comics/mangas.

It's actually a 1v1 fighter with a bunch of assists that fit a niche. Powerful assists have a long cool down while weaker assists come back pretty quickly. Assists can cancel out any attack on hit/block as well as supers. Most assists are made to extend combos and there are only a small few used for oki.
Biggest mechanic of this game is the Vanishing Shield. It's a special type of blocking that nullifies chip damage, prevents cross-ups, and works as a parry that resets both players while giving the shielding player a small frame advantage. It can even be held out indefinitely but must be activated again as soon as it's touched by any attack. The catch? It can make an unsafe attack from the enemy safe because it resets them as well. The input for it is 4E while rolling is 6E. For this reason, if you try to spam it during a meaty assist while the other person crosses you up, you can open yourself up. It makes enemy grabs unbreakable too.
The burst system is important too. It gives plenty of meter, regen, allows you can cancel special moves into a roll, and makes combos untechable if you hit them with a red burst (used only for combos or making an attack safe). The Variable Rush mechanic is something else that's pretty unique as you sacrifice 2 bars to turn invincible and perform a combo on the character. VRs have their own specific moveset and allow you to perform different actions depending on what you press which can end in a good set-up or corner carry. It's similar to the one in The Last Blade 2 but more diverse.
The hooktube vid has some great high-level matches. The game is very combo heavy but they're pretty easy to pull off for the most part and many of the longer combos aren't necessary to win. In fact, you can button mash the Variable Rush and probably get the results you want. It's a pretty fun game with my only complaint being that the OST could be a little better.

My best short answer would be a faster Street Fighter with a hybrid of SFxT gems and MKX variations. The gougi really is a big deal in terms of how it affects matches. You get prebuilt decks of skills that activate based on conditions, such as super armor or the ability to 6-chain normals. If you don't really find the gougi interesting then pass on FEXL because I feel like that's the one thing that really makes the game unique unless you really just have a hard-on for the EX characters.

Honestly I think it would have been better idea for Arika to just make an Fighting Layer HD first before trying to make a new game. If they had the source code from the original all they had to do was pretty it up, make all the special CPUs/Bosses secret playable characters, throw in training and online play with lobbies. Then boom, you would have giving something fans they've been wanting for years, it probably would have been less expensive and it could have been used as litmus test for publishers to actually get some outside funding for FEXL.

It's a very good game, although different from the XX games in some big ways, which veterans didn't always appreciate. The YRC system allows for really stupid neutral (even though using YRCs like that is a trap) decisions, and the inclusion of PRCs allow for a lot of stupid mistakes to go unpunished. Danger Time is also pretty dumb, even if it is funny.
The balance is very good, barring a couple of outliers in either direction (Johnny & I-No don't need to be as good as they are, Pot and Axl don't need to be as bad). Even a "bad" character like Pot has two degenerate uses of YRC, though, so even the "low tiers" are far from unplayable.
On the other hand, it has the best tutorial on the market and the grayfix are gorgeous. Story mode is fun, and digital figure mode is a great addition to keep you grinding for $W. Ultimately, whether you enjoy it or not comes down to whether or not you want it to be a sequel to +R, which it isn't, or a new and different installment in the GG series, which it is.

I agree, I was just making the point that the real nuance of the game compared to other games out right now is the gougi. If the gougi just aren't interesting enough, and for some people they won't be, then they may just not get much out of the game especially for the price it's going for and with the array of pretty good fighters out at the moment. I would wait until we see more concrete information about future updates/additions before saying "yeah, it's worth buying right now", assuming Arika lives long enough to actually keep working on the game.

It's a mess of bugs held together with duct tape and chicken wire. The community is composed of BB players, UNIST player, and RWBY fans (They're apparently "transphobic" by other peoples' standards, which would be a good thing if they also didn't think frame data was worthless). The game is being updated/sold piecemeal and there are jarring gaps on the roster because of it. Most characters' signature normals are locked behind two or three hits of autocombos (lol neutral) or simply not present at all (lol source material).
One of the (((community figureheads))) recently came forward with 3,000 words of apologist sophistry asking you to forgive ArcSys's bullshit because the game is LITERALLY SO GOOD GUYS, YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW, UGH. You should be GRATEFUL the devs are giving you the chance to pay $85 for a complete roster of reused assets and constant patches!
All of this would be fun/funny, of course, had it not been bought as a headliner for EVO and thus meant to be Taken Seriously™.
