Even if he didn't and he had a very high paying job (which I doubt), the most optimistic outlook would be that he started gambling at CSGO's release (I assume he fell into it at a much later date) which means ~35000$ in 6 years (so 6k per year).
In both cases he has a problem, he either got into debt because of that or eats nothing but pasta every day to fuel his gambling. That or he's loaded.

I don't think it ever is, the chances of winning rare stuff (i.e stuff that would sell for more than 100$) is usually under a percent. Even then, oftentimes people that have lootbox gambling addiction keep rare stuff they open instead of selling them.
The house always win, especially when the house is selling you :
1) virtual stuff
2) that can be resold to other people through a market you control
3) on which you take a 10% cut on every transaction
I'm honestly surprised no other greedy jew jumped on Valve's marketplace idea. Think about it, someone spends 250$ on keys to get a knife. It didn't cost you anything except an intern's time modeling and texturing this stuff.
Now, the poor sod who got the knife decides to make a profit and selling it 350$ on the marketplace. Someone buys it. Our guy gets 315$ and 35$ goes to Gaben's already full pockets.
Granted, the really expensive stuff gets sold through Paypal or other means but you get the idea.

I think the SteamDB counter is more accurate cause I think I've spent more, but I can't check it since I set my account to private.
Overall though, pretty good, I have like 130 games and 300 (((DLC))), so average I spent around 8 buckaroos per game. Last time I checked though, without all the sales that I (((took advantage of))) my account was worth something like $3-4K.
But tbh I think I'd be pretty peachy with just deleting read: selling my steam account entirely, but I'd have to scrub it the gigantic fucking post history. It's a shame you can't just fucking transfer games, or even sell them.

If I ever buy a game I play it pirated first to see if it's worth spending money on. Mount and blade here in the statistics is probably the best example. I had easily 500 hours in that before buying it which isn't counted in the steam stats. Civ V being so high was when I was between computers and only had linux. Vast majority of it would have been in vanilla. Fallout 4 I'm not even ashamed of because I've modded it to basically be mech warrior and Tera I played with the /vg/ guild a long while back.
