What are the best CRPGs, those you'd expect anyone into the genre to play? I'm only a mild fan, but Fallout 1/2 are two of my favorite games, and I'm currently enjoying Baldur's Gate. I backed Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity, and Torment and I'd say that I ordered them in quality with Wasteland 2 being a solid "bad", so I guess the genre is effectively dead. I played DivOS and it didn't feel much like a CRPG at all to me, it felt like a linear tactics game. It seemed of significantly higher quality than other recent attempts at the genre, but it wasn't for me. Oh, and TRANNY was also dogshit.

I have not encountered a full retard quest.
Most of the quests had multiple ways of solving them, aside from the main quest.
Compare this to BG2 where a lot of quests are on rails.
Main plot and themes of even sidequests are really good that touch up on tech vs magic/nature, racial/class disparity, religious themes especially how we tend to deify people and events with layers upon layers of symbolism to the point that it's so far from reality.
Even the humor is good

The inventory system sucked, but everything else UI is pretty straightforward actually.

Other CRPGs didn't have, say, the Black Mountain Mines so bizarrely early in the main quest. Playing (say) a mage that just spams Harm all game, no problemo. Playing quite a few other builds, HAHA FUCK YOU GO LEVEL GRIND.

How nice for you that you never encountered, say, the Siamese Twins quest. And the accompanying reveal that a huge chunk of the entire alignment system is full retard. Making a character with 10 INT in Fallout is kinda' stupid, as many of the games have quests that will grant you one or two points in INT, permanently, but not so much for other SPECIAL categories. Depending on how early or late in the game these opportunities may be, you may not want to dial it down to 8, but stick with 9. Or just use a hex editor and make a god file for dicking around with the game to see what it would be like if Superman was a wastelander.

In many ways, I agree with you. This is why I watch the anime, then read the manga, then read the light novel. The anime is always summarized, cuts out important sections, and ultimately does present the story properly. And in a lot of cases it's simply because of time and budget reasons. Everything's pretty well explained for new players, and the story is centered around characters who weren't in the first two games. Some of the sidequests have more emotional impact if you're familiar with the factions from the old games. I'd say you'll be fine playing New Vegas first, as long as you pay attention.

jokes aside this just reminds me of stuff i've been thinking about with all modern games party writing, east and west. In modern games especially bioware trash you'll find a perfect rainbow of characters from different places and races and creeds but they all get along absolutely perfectly. It's just not exciting or interesting when you actively avoid any potential discord within the party. And in JRPGs i've noticed a trend of more recent ones is just shameless sucking of the protagonists dick and less and less interactions with one another outside of the protagonist
