Around 2014 (also around the time that gay dwarves and whatnot started seeping in). It was in response to how op undead and husks were and I stopped playing around this point because the game was already too easy and I absolutely loved the crazy fucking shenanigans that the necromancy would inflict with near unkillable undead.

Now it just feels like each update that the game either puts in boring shit like 'muh elven dancers' or nerfs the fun shit to fight.

Guys, I had a fucking gay idea. I want to start a fortress and name all of my dorfs after various vidya characters; it'd be like 8chanmania but on some kind of batshit crack because characters would be starving, getting married to each other and giving birth, killing each other and going insane, turning into werewolves, and having autistic friendships with other characters to the point where it all becomes a god damn mess of a procedurally generated fanfiction. Once the magic update comes out this is going to be even better because we'll be able to make the worlds so magical that all life and lore is randomly generated and we'll have god damn weird shit happening mixed in with it all.

I think this could potentially make for a fun thread with screencaps of various shit that happens.

Yeah, to make up for the lack of magical worlds with crazy shit at the moment I think settling in a really bizarre location could make things entertaining. I'm honestly not too skilled at DF though and my first step right now is to properly fight off a goblin invasion on my steps to creating a sustainable fortress. Bruh, the game is fucking easy.

It's fucking easy. Let me break this down for you. First of all, all the controls are on display at all times for anything you can access. I've never touched adventurer mode, so I can't speak for that, but in Fortress Mode, anything you can do is literally on the screen. And there's only three things you need to concern yourself with at first.

HOUSE YOUR DWARVES

Open the [d]esignations menu. You use this for about half your interactions with your dwarves. In this case, you want to [d]ig out the side of a mountain. Give yourself a big area, then a bunch of smaller ones attatched to a long hallway. Designate again, using [t]rees and then highlight a bunch of the Os you see outside for wood.

Once you have space, [b]uild (Here's another quarter of what you'll usually be using, the build menu, where you construct things.) a few [w]orkshops. Carpenter, mason, and craftsdwarf are most important right now. Once you set them up, use [q]uery (The last quarter of how you interact with dorfs) to make beds by hovering over the carpenter's workshop.

Figured all that out? Congrats, you've now got an understanding of half the gameplay. Once the beds get made, go back into the [b]uild menu and select the beds, placing them as you like. housing philosophy is sort of beyond me, but you can set up a dorm, whatever.

FEED YOUR DWARVES

Next, find some clay or mud and [b]uild a farm plot. follow the on screen instructions to make it bigger, but be aware it doesn't need to be enormous starting out. Set it for plump helmets. Now build a still and a kitchen, and get your craftsman churning out pots. Pots, mind you, not anything else, because they can hold both seeds and drink, and that's important. Once the farm is growning, the still is brewing, you're pretty much set.

MINE AND FORGE

Build three new workshops: a Metalsmith's forge and two furnaces. The furnaces should be a smelter and a wood furnace. If the first fails, it's because the anvil was moved at some point, just redo it and it should work fine. Once these are set up, set up a hallway into a small room. Then, [d]esignate a down stairs.

Wait for it to be done. [>] down to the next z-level and designate an up/down stairs on the same spot. The u/d stairs can then be expanded as far down as you like. Be aware that things lurk in the dark, but miners tend to be very strong and generally handle themselves pretty well.

Once you have mined a fair bit, set up stockpiles (visible on the main screen) for stone, wood, and food, then Bars and Blocks. Instruct the wood furnace to turn wood to charcoal. Once you've a decent supply of charcoal, you can smelt metals (It only lets you do ones you actually have, don't be daunted by the large list) and then work them into… whatever. I suggest chain shirts and boots, myself.

PRO TIPS

This will get you started, but if you're interested in other stuff in the game read the fucking wiki. This is especially useful when you get into trade and nobles and shit.

Stockpiles are customizable and probably one of your greatest tools.

Mine a lot. Mine out apartments before you need them. Mine out whole floors into complexes you might not even use. A skilled miner is comically useful in battle, because of what mining trains physically. Plus, in time you'll use that space.

Once you know the baby shit you then learn how to record macros with ctrl+r, then use ctrl+s to save them and ctrl+p to replay them.

The result is you can cut the tedious shit such as typing "COKE","ANVIL","BITUM" or selecting 6 different types of underground seeds individually.

Or how about stockpile settings? It also has a primary selector, but no secondary one. Meanwhile the enable/forbid category buttons aren't really used elsewhere, and you have THREE different pairs of buttons, when a "toggle column" would have sufficed.

My point is, the game is over ten, almost 15 years old. The interface is cobbled together from things that worked then. It needs to be simplified and made consistent. And no this isnt a "hurr its too hard" difficult. Its actively user unfriendly. Its fine if youre comfortable with it, but i stopped caring about new versions because i stopped wanting to trudge through a new set of inconsistent menus. If i play again, itll probably be 40d.

The only difference between that sort of game and dwarf fortress is the path of memorization.

Dwarf fortress is heavily long-term memorization for the first hour, then the rest becomes muscle memorization as to what buttons to press.

Godhand, Devil May Cry, and Fighting games may take only 10 minutes to memorize the entire control scheme since, you know, they have up to six buttons and the joystick compared to dwarf fortress which uses nearly the entire keyboard, but take fugging weeks of practice to "git gud" at.

Also, evil tundra fortresses are back in comission now that seeing a tooth doesn't cause the dwarf to contemplate suicide.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the food industry. Here's the thing though: have a more realistic food industry would require having a more realistic approach to biome animals and wildlife in general. Hell, most animal breeding is severely nerfed in DF compared to real life. Just imagine an embark where half of the levels have been completely mined out and covered with mud to allow elk birds to graze. The meat generation could support thousands, and that's excluding birdsplosions and aquarium breeding.

You can't project methods of modern bureaucracy on historical examples that in reality had no comparable control over the economy in the form of governmental specialization(policies) and modern communication technology. The most that the Consuls and Emperors could do is determine the coinage purity and the grain dole. Everything else was basically ancapistan since there were no modern forms of control. One of the reasons why Ceasar crossed the Rubicon is because that ancapistan pushed Roman farmers out of their land with cheaper slaves.

Even when the State wanted to control the economy through price controls due to the worthless currency, ancapistan took over in the form of black market. Which doesn't pay taxes.

From what I recall of his interviews, he's going to have sliders for things like that. He mentioned something like a grimdark slider (that's just what I'm calling it) that adjusts how dark and grim the world will generate, though I don't know how exactly that will change things; he also said there'll be a magic slider that adjusts how much magical fluff is in the world, so you can have low fantasy, extremely low fantasy, or crank it the fuck up so that everything is so fucking magical it starts randomly generating new magical shit.

If he delivers on these promises you should have exactly what you want.

Not even 10 years in and I'm at 16fps. If I disabled children, set visitors to 0, only use stockpiles for perishable food, killed off every animal, set up my industries to only produce the bare minimum to expand, and atom smashed everything that wasn't critical to the fort functioning, I still feel like I'd only buy another 10 years before my FPS dropped below 20. I want to enjoy DF again, but I just can't with this FPS bullshit.

Also, managing stress without The Rapist or DFHack is such a fucking headache. Feels like the setup needed to make sure dwarves aren't constantly stressed due to being away from friends and family would be to have a really solid industry of glassmaking (infinite sand), rock crafting/masonry (infinite obsidian) and bone crafting (infinite bones). Set the whole thing up in a way so that every "non crafter" dwarf would have access to a bunch of workshops that are max level Novice so that they get happy from crafting, but their skills rust down to dabbling and they just keep rotating between the industries to keep themselves happy crafting stuff. And then have every "non military" dwarf that feels the need to fight/martial in squads that train 2 months a year. The most annoying though is that dwarves don't actively seek out to fulfill their social/prayer/entertainment/art/thinking needs even when they have nothing to do. Had a dwarf go from stressed > haggard > depressed and one of her unmet needs was prayer. She was stressed so she'd go in meetings with the mayor every month (which took up most of her time). But she also wanted martial training so I set her up as active marksdwarf with no training orders - aka she shoots at archery targets. But she wants to do crafting so I have her do carpentry. I also can never get dwarves to dance, sing or whatever the fuck they do in temples let alone go there for any reason than to bury the dead underneath as well, its very annoying. I've never had troubles keeping mood up as you've described though. By the time year 2 ends I have a cook spitting out high quality food, booze, legendary common areas, rooms with mastercraft furniture. Food needs a serious nerf in some way or maybe multiple ways. With a couple plots rotating different crops, some animals grazing on underground flora (after piercing the first cave layer and sealing it back up), a male-female pair of egg laying animals, and a legendary chef and brewer, I can:

>avoid anybody feeling like shit (unless something terrible happens to the fort, like dozens dying)

>trade barrels of legendary meals that are worth far more than their weight in legendary crafts

>not worry about mining out quarries needed to mass produce goods that I trade away

>make a stockpile of cooked meals so big that my fortress could stop producing and eat until I get bored of it or experience framerate issues, as it never expires

>make my entire food chain untouchable to invaders

Which is why it needs to be hit with a nerf bat so hard that the challenge hits some sort of difficulty floor.

The following may fix this:

>the soil becomes exhausted after so long and needs to be fertilized with potash, animal dung, etc.

>the existing prepared food dishes expire; cooks can also produce preserved meals which never expire, like fruit preserved in honey or vegetables pickled in brine, but are not as tasty as a full meal

>simple numerical methods (grazing rates are increased, crop yields are decreased, food value is decreased, etc.)

Yes you can, and it is actually pretty easy to make happen. I made a fortress populated by hippopotamus humans for fun once, but I forgot how, it has been years since I pulled it off. But it doesn't require any hacking or any addons, it has to do with embarking in an area that has whatever civilized creature you want, incorporating them into your fortress, ditching the dwarves one way or another, and then getting on with it. It may involve leaving the fortress and then re-activating it, possibly after getting rid of all dwarves in leadership positions. I wish that I could remember the proper sequence, but it is not very difficult to pull off, and there are surely guides on the internet to let you know how.

What the fuck? This is not even close to what I saw when I tried DF. I recall being in some map screen with vague symbols and no description for anything. I somehow managed to click myself into some tiny square area with someone walking back and forth with no clue what to do or how to control anything. There were some hints at the bottom, but when I pressed the keys it did something completely unexpected and I got lost in some black screen menu(?) that covered everything.

Chances are one of the cave layers has a giant underground reservoir of water. But that shouldn't be too concerning. All water is good for is cleaning with soap and giving water to the injured. Both require an operational hospital. Just avoid getting too many people hurt, keep the booze flowing, and chalk up getting down to the underground reservoirs as a long term goal along with a hospital.

I'm trying a new setup (pic related) where the main reservoir in the middle fills up the wells via a U-bend, and any overflow in the main reservoir spills into a 2nd reservoir to prevent flooding.

Simple but effective, I like it. With my reservoirs I tend to just breach a stream and pour it into a cistern and shutting it off with a floodgate once it fills up. Though I've considered doing what you have there and keep a flowing stream of water through so that it could be used for safe indoors fishing.
