Descent 3 was actually quite sophisticated for its time. It's engine is actually two engines fused in one, one used for in-doors rendering and the other for out-doors, which the game switches between inside transition rooms. Hence the name, Fusion Engine.
>The new technology also allowed the developers to create both indoor and outdoor environments; one of the biggest complaints of Descent II was the fact that it was considered too "tunnely".[5] To this end, the developers created a new technology which featured an indoor portal rendering engine "hooked to a flight-sim-like terrain" engine, collectively called the Fusion Engine.[18] The portal engine permitted designers to create small rooms with complex geometry. These rooms would later be linked together via shared dividing polygons called portals to create a portalized world for the player to fly through.[16] In contrast, the terrain engine, which was initially planned for another game and whose function is to create more polygonal detail as players get closer to the ground and decrease polygons when they are farther away, gave designers the ability to create expansive outdoor terrains. Transitions between both engines were achieved using an external room (with its normal vectors inverted) that could be placed anywhere on the terrain map.[16] With this technique, developers could create hybrid levels where the player could transit from indoor to outdoor areas in real-time and without loading screens.[16][19] Leighton commented that whenever one of these transitions occurs, "the game code [switches] collision detection, rendering, and so on, to use the terrain engine".[16]

I don't know what you're really trying to get at here. That doesn't justify F.E.A.R. making the exact same mistakes and there are good horror games before F.E.A.R., Resident Evil or Silent Hill for example.
>The thing is fear has decent AI / map design
The AI is ok but is mostly just smoke and mirrors using callouts like flashlight or grenade to make you think they're smarter than they are. Half Life 1 did the same thing years before. The map design is fucking terrible with the same bland offices and industrial areas again and again.
>and decent light that actually made shadows when it shone on non static objects and while it moved.
The lighting and graphics are one thing it did well fair enough. I hardly think it can be carried on the back of that. We've not even gone into the weapon limit and the fact that none of the fun guns have anywhere near enough ammo to ever get used so you're limited to generic guns for 99% of the game: the shotgun was good but not good enough to carry it on.

The point is there's nothing technologically advanced or innovative about Dark Messiah and FEAR. Dark Messiah is a very generic game outside of its physics based combat but most of what makes it interesting was already done in other games and the physics work exactly like in Half Life 2 since it's basically a mod for that game. FEAR is a great shooter but the AI does nothing groundbreaking compared to games like Halo CE which did it in a very similar way years before and with better enemy design and variety, and the level design is nothing special compared to similar linear fps like the first Half Life. Also, FEAR expansions are either more of the same or shit, so I don't understand what you mean.

Reminder that 18-19 years olds are the worst posters. They consider themselves "adult" now so they start acting all high and mighty when they are still children in the brain. They think they are invincible and would even support extremist ideologies as long as it will get them into the "cool club". They will continue to do stupid mistakes and rush into everything without lurking about it, eventually flooding the community with trash as long as they aren't bullied for speaking out loud against senior board users.
Until then they will be cheeky about being intruders to the community, and want to seek power in it. Might even change the community entirely without learning anything.

Something a lot of people don't realize is that a lot of devs in the 2000s were making games that looked dated at the time of launch.
But if you want a game that's ahead of its time, here's Achron. It's a RTS that incorporates time travel mechanics into the game. It'd've been popular as shit if not for the fact that it is fugly as shit with bad pathfinding. But the core time travel mechanics are fucking dope as hell.

This, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Things don't just end because a certain date on the calendar rolls in. As a kid I've played a lot of German made strategy games with prerendered isometric graphics made circa turn of the century which people often associate solely with the late 90s.

You're kidding right? Moncolle is one of the biggest things in gaming, yet there's still none other nearly as good as the pioneer franchise MegaTen.
Now to be fair, Shin wasn't the first title but it redefined its franchise. On that note, it may be the very first successful series reboot in video gaming.
As for Persona, it revamped the demon party system with even more creativity. It was also one of the first console RPGs to branch into 2 full separate playthroughs, and one of the first video games to adapt analytical psychology and the tarot as its main themes.

Batman & Robin for PS1. It's a 3D open world sandbox game released before GTA3 etc but I really like the gameplay elements of this game as well. Basically the game has an in-game clock and during the game Mr Freeze and his minions will commit crimes like diamond heists etc all around the city. However, you don't know where or when these crimes will occur. So what you do is you drive around the Gotham City, seek out for clues and analyze the clues with your batcomputer in hopes that they'll reveal the time and location of the next crime. Hopefully you'll make it in time to ambush the baddies and kick their asses.
It all sounds good on paper. Too bad this game also has one of the worst tank controls of its era and somehow the driving is even worse.

Did the same with yakuza.

That's what Underworld Ascendant was propping itself up to be. Too bad the footage so far has been disappointing to put it very lightly.

That would mean it's easy to be a Doom 3 clone since you don't need to put much effort.

Prey had more effort put into it than Doom 3 and Quake 4 combined if you want to stretch your standards that much.

Well sure, but I don't think the time put into designing vagina doors made it a better shooter in the end.

Virtual pet games had always been a bit lackluster, things like tamagotchi, chao garden, and nintendogs were an interesting insight to the genre but were ultimately surface-level and imo failing to emulate the satisfaction of owning and raising a thriving pet.

Special pleading much? All RPGs inherently have RPG elements, and a focus on RPG elements doesn't make it any less first person (which is what you asked for). Duh-doy.

Screeching about oldfags and apologizing cancer on your board is the first step in becoming an application for facebook.
Nothing is fun. Everything is serious business. Even having fun is merely an illusion of fun, deep social manipulations and interactions lead to social changes, taste and character development. Video games are like drugs or medicine. You need daily dose that doesn't contain poison to have enough enjoyment of a hobby you pour your entire life to, even if you choose to ignore it. So you end up becoming extremely precise in your tastes, choices, decisions and what you speak to people. From playing fucking video games.
You always need to have oldfags and long time lurkers on a board not for reputation, but for their knowledge and experience on how idiots can turn a good thing upside down, so they will speak out and ditch the newfag who does the "thing" wrong. And they need to stay honest and not betray the laws they've been living on for a long time, because the desire for traitorous cancerous activity becomes stronger over time. Even imageboard can become reddit if people are weak, new and dishonest. Especially with modern jewish activity.
>monkey ladder experiment
Humans are more complex than animals. You cannot have society without hierarchy. You lead one faggot on top of the ladder and parasitic elements become in control, desire to profit and reconstruct the social environment created for a long time. Although our real danger will come from administration when they will sell out for monetization money and people like you will be name calling anyone against that, it will first begin with displacement of old user base and pouring in a new one.
>They disrespect young users by default
Because you don't deserve respect because you are hormonal run hyperactive fiend who will completely change in a matter of few years. Naive and arrogant to fucking everything. "I am so sick of disrespect, i'l pretend i am the boss now" - typical leftist destructive trait.

Halo CE was uncontested on consoles for years. It was absolutely ahead of its time. The game mechanics (overshield, 2 guns, grenade button) all make sense in context, and for the first time ever aiming was easy with a controller. Sequels kinda shit the bed, though. Firefight is all I really care about after this game.
