This would require time, effort, and talent to be able to create such a character, which most devs today don't have, which results in the shitty female characters, both main and secondary. This goes with antagonists as well if games like Uncharted 4 are any indication (where they have to use blatant writer's convenience to make the female antagonist almost untouchable and immune to harm while those attacking her (usually male) get shat on constantly). Considering that most western games (and recently with companies like Capcom, Jap devs) create female characters that are supposed to appeal to these SJWs and beta males, the average response to those that do not follow or like these ideals is disgust and/or indifference to these characters and games.
Even back when this topic was new in regards to Zelda, I don't think many would have an issue with playing a female character in a Zelda game (either as zelda herself using both her magic and disguising as Sheik to solve puzzles and sneaking behind enemy lines and such while supporting Link in his journey, or as an original female character like Linkle that has little to no ties to Link), but having Link be female wouldn't make sense as the games are supposed to represent most western medieval heroic tales of the valiant knight going on an epic adventure saving the land and the princess from an evil force. This pisses off the SJW cunts and makes beta males uncomfortable because it shows that the best fantasy games/stories are ones that are based on natural and traditional roles proven true by historical evidence and cultures/religions of old, and as modernists, they must destroy and demonize anything natural and traditional by any means as their (((masters))) have instructed.

Next Zelda game that uses BotW engine should have traditional items but have limited uses and resources requiring you to quest for odd jobs or hunt non-human enemies (no more free weapons). To get around not having things like hookshot and fire rod early on, to sequence break dungeons you rent mercenaries that have this gear already. Mercenaries can be controlled by second player or swapped in place of the first when solo.
Idea I had a long time ago was that Link was apart of a gang of thieves. Everyone in the gang (except Shiek, but only the not-Ganondorf Gerudo male knew) were all guys though. And to mock Link, Link gets to cross-dress in girly disguises. That said could have a deal with Koei-Tecmo to allow a non-canon Linkle DLC mercenary as cross-promo with Hyrule Warriors. Maybe have Lana and Cia mercenaries as well.

Zelda then has to go out on a quest to find the master sword to save Ganon, but because she lacks actual combat skill the game would revolve more around puzzle solving/getting other people to do things for you.

The dev team had planned to put in dating sim elements, and that's why so many girls are thirsty for Link. They eventually dropped the mechanics after realizing that the way the plot was going would invalidate most of the possible endings. But the hints of "bitches love Link" remained in the script.

I'm not 100% sure either way, but the history is convoluted and murky enough for this to be true. Off the top of my head:
>OoT originated as a 64DD game, heavily depending on its then-massive rewritable storage for everything from a detailed persistent world, through kiosk/network-distributed expansions, to rumors of nigh-episodic content
>Master Quest originated as "Ura Zelda" ("Another Zelda"), a dungeons-only remix of OoT akin to the second quests in some older Zeldas, developed after major design on OoT itself was complete.
>MM originated as "Zelda Gaiden" ("Zelda Sidestory"). As Ura Zelda was under development, new levels reusing the assets were made.
>As the 64DD was held back from release for no good fucking reason, OoT began to fragment. At first OoT was to be released as a cart, stripped of its mass storage features, with stuff like Ura and Gaiden released as 64DD expansions. Eventually, Gaiden was released standalone as MM, the 64DD was dropped out as a quick cashgrab for RandNet, and Ura only saw release years later as a bonus ROM on OoT rereleases.

I'd have to look it up to be sure, but other anon's claims are far from unbelievable, given the fact OoT's 32MB cart was half the capacity of a 64DD disk (not to mention the extra 36MB of generic assets in the 64DD's onboard ROM, and the RAM pak doubling the N64's memory to 8MB), so tremendous amounts of something were obviously chopped away.
