I like the monster collecting/battling aspect, but it's coated in a saccharine teen-girl-notebook-doodles artstyle and even dryer colors than current Pokemon. It seems to rely on gibberish and cutesy nonsense to be quirky and interesting, but it's really just lame.

I'm not sure about "audience complaints" but it says on their website that they removed it because they felt like the dogfighting aspect of the gameplay would not really fit with the cute and carefree aesthetic of the rest of the game.

To be honest, I've been following them even before Double Fine picked them up. I like keeping tabs on underground indie projects and the project lead is a qt and it's always heartwarming to watch someone pour their heart and soul into a project regardless of how cutthroat the industry currently is (hello Brigador devs). She's a self-taught programmer too, pretty impressive since she's able to shit this out with her lowtest husband. I mean how many AGDG devs have made a shippable product now? Four?
I thought the dance battle was a cool idea but it turns out that the animations aren't even late 80's-early 90's dance battle moves so that killed the novelty of it for me. Best thing about the dogfighting in these types of games is that it adds a little bit of dark shit in an otherwise pretty lighthearted game, the contrast is always striking as can be attested by the consecutive successes of the Pokemon franchise.

The style is cute, but the problem is it's still bland and forgettable. A minute after watching the video I already forgot what everything looked like. The designs are too simplified. There's no detail. That's not even discussing how boring and mundane the scene was.
