If you're talking about text adventures, you don't even need that because a lot of them let you type only the first 4 characters of a word instead of the whole thing (or even just the first letter for directions). It depends on the "engine", of course. And MUD clients have a lot of scripting capabilities, so you can pretty much do whatever.
Anyway, for text adventures, anything by Infocom, Level 9, and Magnetic Scrolls is worth playing. Some are much harder than others though. Infocom even has a difficulty rating for their games. You'll need the manual too, but those are easy to find.
Oh, there's also the Hobbit/LOTR games by Melbourne House. They did a good Sherlock Holmes game too.
If you want adventure/RPG, check out Eamon for the Apple II. It has a ton of scenarios (over 250!)
