Just started playing Gotta Protectors & it got me thinking. Are there any other "New" Nintendo NES games being made? you know, new games but built within NES limitations? I know there's shovel knight & that new Bloodstained game too, but is there anything else?

c69cea No.15044287

Shovel Knight and Bloodstained were not built within NES limitations. They would never run on NES hardware.

The shovel knight developers also hated the NES because they viewed the NES color palette as far too limiting. They're "diversity" cucks that actually got mad that the "racist" NES palette only had 1 shade of dark poopy brown. Not enough to adequately protrayed a "diverse" range of skin colors. OP here. Just going to clear up some autism bait since you guys cannot piece together what I was asking. I wanted to know if there are any other NES Style games, that DON"T run on an NES, but borrow very heavily from the NES. Gotta protectors obviously wouldn't run on an NES, but they used NES colors & tilesets. Shovel knight also is very close to what a 16:9 NES game would look like if it were possible.

TLDR: Stop being autistic & talk about games like Shovel Knight, Gotta Protectors, & Bloodstained Curse of the Moon. I was just asking for new games that look like modern NES titles, not NES Homebrew I could run on a flash cart.

>The NES was only capable of spitting out 54 different colors… and that’s not a lot. The problem for us mainly came in trying to display a gradient in most hues. For example, there isn’t a very useful yellow, the darker spectrum of color is very underrepresented, and

there aren’t many shades that work for displaying a character with a darker skin tone.

Wtf, I love the NES now.

I'm not immediately aware of any good NES homebrew stuff coming out in the future, but there have been a few decent homebrew games in the past coupe years for the NES. Just look up NES Homebrew to find it. Alas, a lot of NES homebrew games look like shit that wouldn't have been approved for the Action 52 collection.

NESmaker is making headway, so we may see a lot of shitty Zelda clones in the near future that will run on an Everdrive. It's sort of a WYSIWYG NES software programming environment. I plan on using it to make a basic JRPG, and to force myself to learn how to use Famitracker, but it's not going to be anywhere as good as Final Fantasy.

On topic, I did enjoy messing around in LAN Master. It's a nice puzzle game with 50 levels of increasing complexity. The developer made a few other games, and they all run fine on an Everdrive.

I've worked with Famitracker before, you only get three by default - the two pulses and a triangle. The other two channels are for noise and DPCM samples only (though you could theoretically get another melodic instrument out of the latter, though that still only leaves you with four 'voices').

If you count romhacks, yes. Those are meant to be playable on the original hardware.

9843ab No.15046114

>>15046078

Yes. Most often, programmers just make a ROM that will play in emulators and on flash drives, but those ROM images can be burned onto a chip and mounted on the appropriate chipboard for the memory mapper the ROM uses, and can then be played in an actual system as if it was a retail game. It just costs a shit-ton of money to produce custom boards and chips if you can't already source the materials you need.

The aforementioned NESmaker allows one to make games that don't require 100% hand-typed coding, using a more WYSIWYG interface, but you can still directly edit code. Kind of like using a 3D printer to make a rapid prototype, and using the printed item as the bae for casting a mold.

How big is the actual market for make games for vintage systems?

Also, I'd like to have some advice. I'm interested in making games of my own, but I want to learn while having to deal with limitations (Since it seems like a lot of developers today don't seem to know the meaning of the word). I currently have Petit Computer on my 3DS (Which runs SmileBasic), but i'd like to know if it would be better to learn how to start programming with that, or with one of the vintage systems? I also have a working KayPro 10 laying around as decoration if I really should start with learning how to do it as bare-bones as possible. In addition, I also have Clickteam Fusion installed on my computer, but I only learned later on how lazy interface-based programming is.

The market itself is pretty damn big. You have the neophytes, who want the thrill of buying a brand new game for the classic consoles they bought, and are trying to get into. You have the classic game enthusiasts, who want something new for the systems they've cherished since childhood. You have the FUCKING TRUST FUND SOY-BASED HIPSTERS, WHO DON'T KNOW THE FUCKING VALUE OF A DOLLAR, AND BUY THE SHIT FOR "MUH NERD CRED". So the market for new games for classic systems is indeed there.

XenoCrisis for Genesis (and Dreamcast) is going to be Alien Syndrome meets Aliens meets Smash TV meets Blaster Master Zero, from what I can tell of the sprite designs, animation, and beta footage.

Is there anywhere online to pirate commercial homebrew roms? I sold most of my consoles and games in favor of emulation and PC games to be honest. The only games I don't play on a PC are waggling (because I have a modded Wii U) and light gun games. Cases where you can actually buy a rom are okay too, but only if the game is good and the developer's not a faggot.

I wonder if darkumbra has that shit, I wouldn't know since I stopped looking there when they added anti-adblock bullshit. Alternatively, entire rom sets, if they get updated with modern stuff. I somehow doubt it though.

I never played this before. This game is fuckin cool. The art is nice.

I turned on my overlay to see if it was capturing screenshots since it displays a small icon when screenshotting is working, but unfortunately when the game is in TV mode it captures an imprint of the overlay which isn't supposed to be captured at all. I don't think TV mode is quite right anyways. It adds chromatic aberration on text/menus and the scanlines are not arching perfectly with straight horizontal lines in the image either so the curvature effect is clearly off. So maybe I should just keep TV mode off. I kinda like scanlines for playing these sorts of games on my OLED TV, but the execution of TV filters in this game is not the best.

They skip a step out of laziness, after the animation frames are blocked out you're supposed to go back in to add detail, using a single sprite to keep elements consistant when you go back in later. This is basic animation, shit that comes naturally.

On top of that their way of spriting out environments kind of misses the point on why environments tended to be two tone in the NES days, it wasn't limitation, it was for clarity. Definitions of the background and foreground were done by two separate color themes, Castlevania's clashing orange and blue theme, Megaman's complimentary color scheme, and Mario's saturated enviroments were all different styles used to clarify what was and what wasn't. Their picture bit with the black guy, he fucking BLENDS INTO THE BACKGROUND HE'S STANDING ON. That shit doesn't happen in the old NES gems. Characters didn't have skin tones, they had colors. Fucking Trevor Belmont was fucking orange for fuck's sake.

They're haphazard and retarded.

I already beat all the bosses I needed to collect those odallus shards and went to the final area. I beat the woman who darts across the screen with two swords. Then I went to fight the next guy who I had fought before, but I couldn't beat him.

Skull man floats across the screen doing various shit that I can fairly easily dodge, but then he summons this one fucker who throws fire at me and jumps around the screen sometimes pausing in mid-air to throw a bomb down which blows flames across the ground that you have to jump to dodge. Even that fucker is easy the first time he is summoned, but he keeps being summoned stronger and stronger, taking more and more hits to kill. He's fucking me up more than the boss because sometimes you can duck his fire while hitting him, but other times he throws the fire in a different way which hits you. The level 3 sword takes ages to kill him when he's summoned in the strongest yellow form. I think if I just kill the yellow version twice then I'll only have to hit the boss a few more times to kill him, unless the fight is even longer that I think. I eventually gave up and will have to come back to it later.

Oddly I missed the level 2 sword and that ring relic. Got the level 2 armor and level 3 sword, tons of health and backpack upgrades. Only found 2 out of 3 of those hidden marks that look like a windows media player icon. I imagine the guy gives you the final armor upgrade, but if that is found elsewhere then I dunno what he gives. I don't use the weapons very much unless they make hitting a boss easier in some way. Maybe I should use them more as I would be able to keep my distance better and take less hits.

It's not the sort of item I thought it was, I thought it would be like the bracelet or necklace. You just get a better sword and the area of effect of your sword slash is increased enough that you can crouch-slash breakable blocks that you're standing on top of to smash down through them, even though the angle of your slash appears unchanged.

I dunno if the level 2 sword does it since I never found it, but I know the level 3 sword does.

This isn't really that bad. It just comes off as them wanting to have a darker skinned character or nigger in their game and the color palette wasn't good enough for it. It makes sense; sometimes you wanna have a nigger in your game for various reasons. /v/ is basically /polwithvideogames/ though so shit like this is basically white genocide to them but I really can't give a shit too much about this. Speaking of Shovel Knight being virtue signalling cucks. They added a patch to the game that allows you to swap the sex of many of the game's main characters. You can also change their pronouns to male or female regardless of their sex appearance setting, and there's even an "set all to random" option.

Also, I just recently tried it out. I didn't like the WASD+IJKL default, so I set the IJKL buttons to ↑←↓→. But when I did this, it caused the ↓ key to function as the OKAY button and the down button in menus at the same time, always moving the cursor before selecting something. I swapped WASD and ↑←↓→ but wasn't really feeling it. So then I hooked up a controller and bound the buttons to that. When I did this, suddenly jumping caused the sub-weapon to automatically be set to the default. The two problems with buttons doing two things at the same time shouldn't have occured at all. What the fuck were they doing when they made this shit?

>>15066593

Firstly they didn't actually need the extra colors to have a nigger in their game as >>15060636 clearly exemplifies. Secondly, if you think they're not wording things in this way and using these buzzwords

>The final cheater color was needed to help make the cast of Shovel Knight more diverse.

>This was especially problematic when doing the “Pixel My Face” Kickstarter rewards (at a certain pledge tier, backers are immortalized as portraits in the game) since we had backers from all corners of the earth.

>For example, there isn’t a very useful yellow, the darker spectrum of color is very underrepresented, and there aren’t many shades that work for displaying a character with a darker skin tone.

to virtue signal, read the above about pronouns and think again. Now I'm not full "1488 gas the kikes race war now", but their virtue signalling is pretty obvious.

After going back to get items I missed and even getting the last armor upgrade I finally beat that levitating skull face faggot. I was right about the length of the fight. After I killed the strongest yellow version of the guy he summons the second time I only had to hit skull face one more time to kill him. Those guys he summons were easier once I began to pay attention to when and where they spawn. If I ran to the spot where they summon I could wail on 'em at lot before they started moving around which significantly weakened them.

Skull face was the last boss I had to beat before the end boss. The end boss was too difficult so I gave up on him. He blocks attacks, but if I very quickly get behind him right as he's swinging I can strike his back. Then he drops his helmet and does the next stage of the fight where his attacks get more intense, he can even send multiple clones flying across the screen. I managed to wail on him enough to get past stage two, then he reveals his final form, but by that point I don't have enough health left to even begin to deal with that shit. The special attack you can do with the level 3 armor doesn't help much with the first two stages since the guy can usually block it unless it goes off while he''s swinging, but maybe on stage three it would work.

I was also right about the prize you get from that guy with those three hidden markings.

Gave up for a bit then came back and got better (still not gud) at the third stage of the fight which is the final form. Finally, FINALLY, beat the final boss. The weapon items, relics and level 3 armor helped.

Overall a cool game. Great art, music, gameplay, atmosphere. I didn't 100% it though as I missed the level 2 sword, one of the health upgrades, and probably some backpack upgrades too.
