Made by a bunch of crazy Poles (a few ex-CDPR) and published by Devolver; both good things.

It's okay. I beat the game, but it still pissed me off constantly. There was just something about the way the game controlled and the mechanics of your dash that just irked the fuck out of me. You can take very little punishment, which is fine, but you're not given any tools to mitigate that other than dashing – which, if I recall right since it's been some time, are limited and have a recharge cooldown or something.
I would need to really replay it again in order to solidly nail down what really irritated me about it, but it had something to do with the fight design. Outside of a single thing that pissed me off throughout the game, the fights were pretty decent and satisfying. Though there are a few places where it spikes in difficulty and youll be left think "oh come the fuck on."

I made sure to do everything in the game I could possibly find to do, including backtracking a lot through town to see if any places opened up when I got back (a lot of the time that didn't pan out).
Like I said, I'd need to replay it to figure out what got under my skin about the game design. From my memory of my impressions, I remember that the latter half of the game actually wasn't too big a deal, and the final boss was a shrug compared to a couple bosses that came earlier in the game.

It's ok. Really wish they had just made firing (the pistol anyhow) automatic to the direction you're aiming, while using the fire button for your more advanced weapon pickups. That way you could more effectively manage your power weapons and ammo. Melee feels pretty good though. Never needed to bother with the "strategic movement" dash move, since it felt fairly intuitive to use and fucked with the pacing of combat, but you could probably set up some nice melee beatdowns that way.
Another thing I'd criticize is how there's really not much in the way of combat between "arena" rooms - so you're just more or less walking from combat zone to combat zone, rather than having a nice variable flow to combat from the start of a level to the finish.
Overall, I enjoyed Apocalypse for the PSX much more as a twin-stick shooter - but I haven't played a more modern one in a while, and Ruiner definitely scratched that itch. So I guess that'd be a recommendation.

Let me qualify that: if all the journos praise some indie SJW shitpile, they'll all believe it well enough if they happen to hear it, but they just don't care. Normalfags only care about massive budget titles or things that get major marketing with multiplayer, full-budget flavors of the month they rage about and can't shut up about for about sixty days and then they drop that game and leave it in the dust. This happens with all the major vidya, like Destiny, TLOU, Overwatch, etc. Shit like Gone Homo they don't actually buy or play, that's only done by pretentious San Fran hipsters. Normalfags in general only rarely get into that kind of stuff, like Life is Strange.

I don't think you can avoid mention of sjw/liberal things these days but the existence of these things doesn't automatically mean it's propaganda. Context + delivery are what I'd base my decision on. Exactly this- it was overambitious. 1 was cool because the story was minimal but it had the "cool" factor going for it with everything being so cryptic and surreal. Plus it made the game more fun to play through with all the weird stuff happening after you get to your car. But, then you got the lame levels/explanations in 2 as attempts to elaborate on things (like the war stages).
Plus there's only so much you can do to innovate on the style of the gameplay. I didn't find the extra abilities in 2 that fun or useful.

The main two creators, designers and programmers on Descent, Mike Kulas and Matt Toschlog, did a lot of the base groundwork on Overload to make it actually feel like a Descent game. Most of the lead gameplay and level design were handled by Luke Schneider, who got a job at Parallax/Outrage for Descent 3 because of his fan-made levels for Descent 2. The artists and writers were former Volition employees from the Freespace days, and the music is all done by Allister Brimble, Dan Wentz, and Jerry Berlongieri, who all did the music for Descent games in the past. So it is an actual 6DoF game by the creators of Descent, one they wanted to make as an 20th year anniversary project.

So, I bought The Vagrant, not really noticing it's an Early Access title. So I don't recommend anybody make the same mistake I did, but it might be one to keep an eye on. It does nothing groundbreaking, lets be clear, and feels very much like a cheap chinese "Not-Dragon's-Crown" knockoff - except that you only have one axis to move on (so, just left and right movement) and it has a more traditional story with a set protagonist. Can't say anything much about the balance so far, but it seems to err on the side of easy as fuck - but I am not far enough into it yet to really see how it fits - nor is the game even finished yet.
I say it might be worth keeping an eye on, because the combat isn't bad for the price. Combos feel pretty good to pull off, and you unlock more of them as you level up and fill out your character skills. Progression seems pretty fast so far, with higher level skill branches being locked behind key-items tied to progression. Unless I have another outlet for my mana points, I get the feeling I'm just going to have a huge pool of them waiting for story unlocks. Maybe it's a placeholder, or there's more to it. But from what I had access to, it still felt pretty good to chain a light-light-heavy attack into a rage uppercut, followed by a series of drop kicks to an enemies head. There's also a cooking mechanic similar to Dragon's Crown at each campfire resting/save spot which will let you use ingredients you find in the field to cook recipes for buffs. Unfortunately, it's not a mini-game or anything cool. You just eat a meal at a restaurant to learn the recipe, then pick it from a list at a campfire if you have the proper materials.
I don't expect it to really develop into anything really good, but if you like Dragon's Crown, it's still very much a similar asthetic to the art style and gameplay that may be worth a look for $2 on sale. Also, there's apparently a couple studio-crossover eastereggs with Battle Chef Brigade.

Shilling for Star Traders Frontiers. It's like Firefly: the game with a Mount & Blade-esque overworld. You fly around a galaxy map (either the preset canon map or a randomly generated one that you can set parameters for, like system density and inter-connectivty) running into other shitheads going about their business, fueling up, hiring firing and training crew, buying shipping and selling goods as you see fit, and doing storyline shit.
The storyline shit plays itself out whether you involve yourself in it or not, the course of which shapes the galaxy. Factions slap trade embargoes on each other and ramp up military activity or proxy-war piracy dynamically and as the political stage shifts.
Your skillsets and attributes play a big role. Your ship, crew and captain are constantly passing skill saves as you go about daily business, like maintenance checks and disasters, crew infighting and malcontent, and piloting and navigation hazards in deep space. There are three 'mini games' other than the overworld travel, a different one each for ship combat (turn based), crew combat (turn based with an action point system), and a car draw game for exploring, spying, blockading, and patrolling worlds, as well as accessing black markets.
It's comfy, and autistic depending on the difficulty you choose and your playstyle. The difficulty though is also customizable, enabling/disabling the handicaps you or the AI ships/enemies get, permadeath etc.
The game is heavy duty for what it is: i've put 200 hours into it and still love it.

I just came here to shill for this game because I just stumbled upon it and it's blown me away. You're incorrectly comparing to to Dragon's Crown - it's an Odin Sphere clone, not a Dragon's Crown clone. An easy mistake to make due to the Vanillaware art style and the fact that a lot of plebs don't know what Odin Sphere is.
>Unless I have another outlet for my mana points, I get the feeling I'm just going to have a huge pool of them waiting for story unlocks.
You also use mana to enhance your equipment. The "story unlocks" you mentioned are side areas. The items you need in order to continue are in chests. If you're not exploring, you will miss some.
>because the combat isn't bad for the price.
>for the price
Nigga the combat is better than most $30 games and this shit was $1.99. I actually thought the game was going to be hugely defective at that price but it looks like they just have no idea how to price their shit. I haven't played a game with such smooth combat in a long time. I actually gifted it to most of my friends because I felt like I ripped these nips off.
>Can't say anything much about the balance so far, but it seems to err on the side of easy as fuck
What difficulty did you select? I chose very hard, and it seems to be the perfect amount of resistance for me. The monsters can wear you down pretty good, the bosses are acceptably challenging, and the rift bosses will plow your asshole in two. It's the setting I would recommend for people who like these kinds of games. Hard would probably fit most other people. I imagine normal is boring as fuck.

The game tells you every time a new lobby is opened. Games that are full or started are removed from the lobby, and the game is really under populated for how good it is. I haven't played with strangers, but only a long-time friend of mine.

It can be a huge boon to sleeper hits/A/AA games, but the AAA market don't care about longevity and making the game more appealing to the relatively small community that might be created by proper map tools. Rake in millions on the release week and several million more over the next few years, maybe release an HD remake in the next console generation then abandon the game. The idea of actually giving people a reason to play long-term is antithetical to their business model, if you make something so good it remains popular forever you end up competing with your own product. Similar deal as pic related.

Played some Valdis Story Abyssal City, a metroidvania. I want to really recommend it as it is quite ambitious for an indie, especially one that was apparently made by a team of two. However there are a lot of annoyances that pile up. Let's start with the good shit.
>Crisp 2D animation
>Challenging pattern-based bosses
>A skill tree which allows for good variation in builds for each character. Each tree has 15 skills in total, so with the lvl 20 cap (as well as some hidden upgrades to be found in the world) you're forced to make choices
>Equipment with specific perks which encourage build specialization further
>Four playable characters (I'm seven hours into the first and I'd estimate I'm just 75% through barring 100% exploration)
However it's one of those games that try to break from the mold and end up looking like they'd be better off being more conventional. This includes :
<A puzzlingly large lore attached to it, making it seem like some kind of obscure deviantart community's grand epic OC. There's a boomerang guy NPC who later appeared in Shovel Knight for instance. It's not too distracting ingame but it is odd
<Regular enemies are trained to stagger you, and there is no air recovery, only a dodge which works very weirdly, you have to press down, which move cancels, then left or right immediately afterward. It's of little help when enemies dogpile you, as shown in the webm
<To compensate this, the game gives you free revives, however they stop being free for bosses. You get a grade for them similar to something like DMC, and better grades mean permanent stat upgrades. If you use a revive here you essentially might as well reset.
<Level design is quite linear, there are a lot of hidden rooms, but if you're backtracking through an area, you are taking the exact same path no matter what abilities you've unlocked.
<There are NO traversable platforms in the entire game. No jumping down or up any staircase you see, everything that's not background is solid. It's very jarring for a metroidvania and only serves to make backtracking more tedious and restricted
<The map only shows solid blocks which don't really match the actual size of the rooms, only their number of entrances.
I'm probably focusing on my annoyances more than I should, since I do think it's well worth checking out, but the annoyances do stick out like a sore thumb.

They are all very valid, though. They are also all things that stick out because the game highlights them in some way. Like the odd move cancel/dash/dodge move is used a lot in the platforming sections, and some of those require some tight timing. The map is horrendous when you consider they want you to explore, and come back to things later. You also don't get much in the way of mobility options until late in the game. Some things I would add.
<resets in boss battles detract from your score
<at the same time, getting less than S-ranks, or close, for every boss will fuck you up
<game really wants you to explore everywhere because some characters and things are gated behind progress they used to be gated behind time, thank fuck that changed
<weird/wonky hit boxes, try jumping over the yeti or raven and notice how the jump goes. Interaction between the character and enemy starts a bit outside of the character graphic. I only really noticed it with one specific enemy, however
<in order to get all the weapons in the game you need at least one play through where you don't upgrade your other weapons to the max or use the materials to buy extra levels. Again, you only need to do this once for each character's weapons
<the combination of RPG and action means it is very, very possible to absolutely break the game
<despite the timer, focus attacks and assist attacks get more powerful as you use them
I like the game, however. The combat is fun, breaking the game is fun in its own way and it is clear from the S-rank requirements that they want you to. Some are just too damn easy to break. You want to break the game as Gilda? Put all your points into intelligence and then get the talent that increases your other stats a portion of your intelligence then grab the accessory that increases your other stats by a portion of your luck. When you use her ability to quick change magic, you will fill the screen. You don't do jack shit for damage with that attack, but you can do it. You can also give her three or four jumps, and make it so her jump attack damage is increased. All in the same build, and since you already beat the game to unlock her, chances are you don't need a character this ridiculous, even with all of her attacks being magical one of her weapons drains magic upon hitting.

Been putting time into Fight'n Rage lately. It's a good time if you're into Final Fight/Streets of Rage. Noticed a lot of the enemy movesets are based on Street Fighter characters, too. M. Bison, Balrog, Dudley, Adon. Trying to take a different path every playthrough because you can get different levels based on your route. Mostly playing the ninja dude because he's fast and has some pretty legit moves. Was playing the minotaur at first since he's basically just Mike Haggar. It's got sort of a parry system which is cool. Some of the bosses take a couple runs for it to really sink in how you handle them. I guess there's other modes where you can use any enemy/boss characters that you unlock (bought with ingame currency earned exclusively from actually playing the game).

Also AM2R is not "one of the best metroid games" by a long shot, it's very small and tries to distract you from that fact by constantly throwing shinespark tests and sections that don't belong in metroid at you. In super and zero mission the shinespark was the emergent cherry on top. In AM2R it's are YOU badass enough at shinesparking to get this collectible?! Don't want to be a pleb now, don't you?!!.
AM2R knows how to pander to a certain audience and make a fan out of them, but if you think it's "one of the best metroids", you are fucking mental.

It's not so much an issue with management as it is the change in allegiances of management. In the 19th and early 20th century Managers and Workers were seen as having shared interests, often people would work at a given business for decades or even their whole working life, so had a shared interest in keeping it healthy, whereas financiers were essentially viewed in the same fashion as Jews, nomadic, profiteering, etc. This was called corporatism and was the basis for fascism. In the later 20th century managers came to be more and more pulled into the circle of said shareholders/financiers, often being payed partially in dividends, getting bonuses for bowing to the whims of shareholders, etc. Between that and higher-ups tendencies to also bounce around between different companies they have less interest in keeping workers on their side/happy.
As for the tendency of managers to jump in without prior experience, it's a symptom of modern obsession with credentials. Everyone has to spend years getting a fucking degree where before they'd be taken on as an apprentice and work their way up from there. This creates an iron barrier where those who come in with lower credentials or (very rarely) come in on some kind of apprenticeship are hardly ever promoted to management even after years of experience, or at least not the upper levels of management.

Only on sale. It's was a kikestarter project, so only the first two stages actually feel like they're from a complete game. Everything else is unfinished, or unpolished, because they weren't using that to demo and advertise for more crowdbux. And due to the nature of stretch goals, a lot of the content is just throw-away one-offs added in because they promised - but didn't balance the game for or account for in level design. Some of the later DLC shit like Friends to the End and the Beach/Ninja/MSF levels actually redesign stages for their gameplay changes, but that kind of attention to design is missing from earlier DLC where you run through the same stages just with a different set of powers.
So it's a goddamned mess, but still worth the price of admission - so long as that price is low, or free.

So I eventually reached a point where I literally couldn't kill enemies fast enough.
At the end of the day though, it did quickly became apparent the replayability was squarely based on scoring, which I don't care for at all, so I just abandoned the idea of liking it, whether the battery was fucked by performance or not.
