Looking for good disc burners for CD games, specifically Dreamcast and Playstation with CD audio

>Just emulate, nigger

Emulation is inaccurate, and when going to a social gathering, it's easier to convince people to play a real console.

What's the best CD burner and software setup, /v/. I've tried a few things but I still get buggy audio tracks on both PS1 and Dreamcast.

Just use anything that isn't Window's standard disc burner and stick to the lowest write speeds you can get. Outside of a certain cutscene hickup in the second Ratchet and Clank game everything played perfectly.

Don't buy cheap by the lot discs, try to get the ones that look thicker, are made in Taiwan or Japan and not in China, i remember i used to be able to buy discs that were full black like some original Playstation discs, and for some reason they were extremely reliable, they could get super scratched but they would work as if nothing happened.

And slowburn your games but not too slow, 4x is about fine, though out of the hundreds or maybe thusand of discs i burned through the 90's and early 2000's the failure rate was high, around 5 to 10%, sometimes human error, power outages, computer crashing, faulty media, etc. Once you get a good copy treasure it.

Look up the redump wiki, they list drives capable of dumping those, and probably also those capable of burning those too.

For CDs CDmage is the thing I've seen recommended in many place because it has a few functions for audio dumpers.*

Though I can concur that for DC real console is better burning CDs means CDI dumps thus it's automatically garbage, so you're stuck with shitty solutions unless you' shell out for an ODE.

For PS1 I don't see any real reason to use the real thing though but whatever it's your decison.

890909 No.15040889

For my PS2 discs I always used a bog standard LG H10N (iirc). Even a laptop drive worked okay, BUT what mattered in my case was the program.

I have no idea why but my PS2 is picky as fuck. Games burnt with Alcohol 120% work right out. Anything else (imgburn, k3b, brasero) tends to give the red screen.

For PS1 CDs on the PS2, the program doesn't matter but the type of disc does. Cheap ones don't cut it. Some of the most effective were old TDKs and standard Maxell CDs. At one point I thought it could be due to the weight distribution. Some cheap CDs that have a 'flowery' non-symmetrical pattern cut out in the top fail to work properly, but flat discs with symmetrical look work well - and putting a small sticker on a flat disc makes it fail again. So it could be something about that.

I also burn PS1 discs with A120% since it can pick and store subchannel data in MDF/MDS files.

As for DC I have no idea. I got a model 1 with busted disc drive so I'm hoping to stick an ODE someday.

405d40 No.15040917

I remember speaking with an ex hardware engineer guy in his 60s a year or two ago. I think he said discs with gold alloy in them last pretty much forever, but modern cheap ones are shitty and degrade naturally. The difference is $2 per disc, instead of $20 for a stack of 100.

Additionally, copy protection is defeated by having a pivoted laser that can read/write between the grooves that normal data is placed on.

I've had poor luck with internal PC CD/DVD-RWs, even after upgrading, flashing older firmware, etc. The results are a mess. However using an old Thinkpad T42's DVD/CD-RW I've had very good success. My PC's drive is a Lite-On, a good brand but apparently even they make garbage hardware these days. I've heard good things about external drives but I haven't seen anyone do much exploration of good drives. I think it would be a good idea to try an external one. For older systems you may have better luck burning at a slower speed, so don't necessarily target a drive with the highest speed. Maybe a 24x one or slower (12-16x?)

Maybe check that out, couldn't tell you a specific drive though I've had good results with Samsung and Asus drives.

b09539 No.15045548

>>15045502

They do but unless something has changed the support is imperfect on PS2, and it only applies to PS2 games, PS1 is just loaded in a crappy emulator instead of using the proper backcompatibility which is also partially emulated actually

DC uses the same method as the SD to serial adapter for HDDs which used to be pretty shit but that has likely changed since 3 years ago, there's also that $250-300 adapter that's a souped up GDemu with HDD support but why would you spend that much over a GDemu.
