I use a dell visor. $200 and works fine for flight sim.

WMR headsets are pretty good now, compatible with most if not all of the steam platforms, and built in tracking.
Bought a Dell visor too for 200. They're still on sale on amazon. Acer one aint bad either

i'll go with rift or windows mixed reality since they're the cheapest (with WMR being even more cheap) with their tracking just being the front mostly and they had seated experience/small rooms in mind.

from what i've been reading; anything steamvr works with WMR. that means dell vr headsets will work too, but still read on it more

Fucking hell the price of those keeps going up. It was 265 last week, and now it's 288. I've been waiting for it to go under 250 on an international seller but that shit just hasn't happened. Biggest problem is that these headsets are made for women with smaller IPDs. WMR headsets have an IPD set to 63mm while male average sits at 71mm. Headaches and blur for everyone with eyes the normal distance apart. Only the samsung variant has a hardware adjustment for it which goes 60-72mm.

Any game where you get to sit in an interior of a vehicle really REQUIRES vr, this can't be understated because the freedom and the feedback you get from the VR headset makes the game so much more than just a simple Racing/Flying sim.
The Nurburgring for example takes between 6-10 minutes to complete depending on the car and driver skill. Without VR the Nurburgring is a pain to drive and can fatigue you after only 1 lap with a pad and a single monitor.
With VR however I was able to do 1-3 hour stints of continuous driving Online Daily for a week without getting bored. That's equivalent to between 6-30 back to back laps a day without breaks.
The fact is VR just makes driving games better, it makes you better at playing them. It makes it more fun.

So that you don't have to take your hands off the HOTAS to look around the cockpit and keep your eyes on a target. Your movements are amplified, so turning your head slightly to the right (which allows you to keep looking at the screen without any issues) would turn your character's head further to the right. Literally every not-shit head tracking program allows you to change the curves too, so if you think it's too sensitive or too stiff you can just play around with it and see what works best for you.
It's a whole lot of fun and feels more natural than anything else.

The Rift's NSA+Windows only. The devkits at least worked on Mac, but the CV1's been strictly Windows only.
WMR's Windows 10+assrape only.
The Vive's currently Windows only, but Mac support's in the works.

Well to be technical.
It's by design. The drivers would have only worked with Steam running if they went Valve like they were originally going to.
The one positive side to it is that I'd assume that they won't be a shitty broken mess without steam running

i played DCS World (the Huey module) for a few hours with the Vive and it was alright. Pretty cool for looking around the cockpit and makes it way easier to scope out a landing site, check your gauges, that sort of thing. it's limited (as with any other VR game in my experience) by the fact that you can't use your actual hands for anything, so when you need to flip switches, adjust your radio frequencies or whatever you are dragged out of the immersion by reaching out then realizing you need to use your other hand for the mouse
honestly i'd just recommend what >>15030088 said and use a headtracker; at least that way your head/face won't get super sweaty and you don't have to wear a 3lb weight on the top of your head

drivers aren't build into the OS, the problem with those W10 exclusive software is that M$ makes it rely on their w10 ecosystem of pajeet apps and also UWP as 2 extra layers between the hardware and you, say before connecting to the internet, their shitty games have first to run through UWP and then through their Xbox Live app, the People app, and other shit, and if you unisntall a single one of those the game just crashes; but they can remove that requirement at will as proven with the W10 exclusive games they later released to Steam.

They're doing some registry fuckery, as seen by the fact that haptic feedback JUST got released, but was in the bleeding edge version of W10 for WMRS.
They're doing some shit at an OS level, and that's both a good and a bad thing, the good thing is, calls and resources can be called close to the hardware level, the bad is, shit can break with a trivial update that windows 10 just loves to force down your throat.

Don't buy anything less than G25, that'll set you back $100 for a used one. The G29 is pretty good for the money. "Professional" grade equipment goes upwards of $2000, but you can DIY one for less than $500.
Prebuilt motion chairs are upwards of $2500 for the simplest setup, just a frame, an underseat gimbal and two short-travel actuators to rock it back-forth-left-right giving it 2 Degrees of Freedom, pretty limited too but good enough to feel the road. Reasonably extensive setup will be anywhere between $20 000 and $60 000. As for 6DoF setups, I don't even fucking know, they're so rare they're all custom made basically you might as well just attach a seat to a robot arm and that will set you back $100 000. But you can DIY one for a small fraciton of the price: with a junkyard nearby you can get a chair-rocker 2DoF system basically for free, and a 6DoF system is manageable for under $3000. It ain't gonna look pretty, though, you wouldn't be able to show it off in /bst/ without every underage faggot laughing at you.
