Correction: Every Unity game has been doing this for years. Unity has a built-in analytics service that, at least for KSP, was sending more detailed information than Red Shell. At the end of the day though, it's just performance data: Load times, whether or not you have mods installed (which would increase load times), etc. That they have been trying to reduce load times in the latest patch is an indication of their intent.
I guess people singled out KSP because of the EULA change when Take Two bought it, but all Take Two games, their website, Rockstar Social Club, and every other thing they own have that same EULA. They have a unified EULA because they're all intertwined in GTA4/5. All the same, really unprofessional for them to drop that on a title they outright took over. There is no excuse for that, and they'd change that immediately if they really listened to the community like they said. Red Shell is only part of the larger issue.

I'm suspicious that other players in the telemetry space are funding the outrage. Telemetry is now a significant source of revenue for Unity Technologies (if you weren't aware, they sell telemetry as a service to gamedevs and it's in almost all major Unity games made in the last two years) and redshell offering a cheaper alternative that gamedevs were switching to probably pissed them off.
