The Kill The Past series is cyberpunk, but Japanese cyberpunk is less 'punk' naturally. Killer 7 is the 4th game in the series a.d probably the best known one in the west, and more of a psychological thriller than a postcyberpunk narrative. The earlier games are two VNs and point and click game basically. Normally I don't play VNs but these have a way nicer system of displaying dialogue and a lot of first person exploration segments as well, so I recommend them even if you don't like VNs.
The first game, The Silver Case is a cool story but most of the cyberpunk stuff is windowdressing. The second game, Flower, Sun and Rain, is more of a side story, and has little to do with the meta plot, it is fun but skippable IMO. The third game is the best: The 25th Ward. It is way more cyberpunk, deals a lot with the emergence of internet communities and chat rooms, transhumanism, some light biotech stuff, the works. It has one of my favorite settings: giant city that the government is not supposed to have any control over, but the federal government of Japan still delivers mail to the city, so the postal workers straight up carry guns and kill people for the government. The game takes place during a cold war between various behind-the-scenes law enforcement groups and the postal service, while the closestthing to a typical cyberpunk protagonist is a freelance journalist you follow in a side story, who looks like a low life but has a soft side for his pet turtle.

Exactly. It is here and that's why cyberpunk has the potential to carry a powerful message on our current state of society (think like Brave New World or 1984) or even on our way of dealing with new media.
I know of no other genre that could talk about the negative effects of this seemingly unstoppable force for new and greater technology better than cyberpunk.
it pisses me off tho that instead of showing how terrible these things are and how they are found in the real world too, cumlickers assume those are its main selling points.
Anything cyber doesn't take it seriously enough to carry across a message that involves more than 'bad bad megacorp I guess (but buy this game anyway)'
At least there's robot gfs.

I'd suggest reading up on Cyberpunk vs Postcyberpunk, if you're interested in narratives conveying meaning in this genre. The 80s had a handful of conceptually interesting stories like the Neuromancer series and Islands in The Net. The 90s cp stories, however, like The Diamond Age and later video games like Deus Ex were about individuals living in high tech but stable societies where they had responsibilities and families and.were focused on finding their place or affecting change from within. The 80s stuff is more about being an outsider and took a lot of liberties with what future societies would look like. Personally I think the old overly-punk stuff, which 2077 is imitating, is just power fantasy edginess, and not that good for telling interesting narratives.

Exactly, everyone seems to be too content with the current state of the world in Cyberpunk 2077. What happened to transnational corporation casting an evil shadow over the whole city? Or to the uncontrolled urbanization, cramped living conditions and rampant overpopulation? For me Cyberpunk is a setting in which something went terribly wrong. The technology progressed massively, but it didn't bring people any joy. Nation states are gone, replaced by corporate dominions. The middle class was decimated . You are either born into luxury as a progeny of some corporate executive, or you live your usually pretty short life in the gutter.

The best way to do it is to have only small parts of the dialog voiced and things like grunts and screams, the bulk of the writing shouldn't be voiced, like in NWN2

That bug was present at launch and is still not fixed.

The third is better than the first and its story is arguably as good or better than the second's. My personal hope, "V" literally lost their original voice, is equipped with voice box tech from the start, its all in the source material. Oh man, that would get me interested.
But that's the current problem with the CP2077. This is all masturbating over what ifs, maybes, and the right talking points being trotted out by the devs, marketing team. We know almost nothing. I already have accepted that it is, a more custom Geralt/Denton/Jenson, with the name "V". Based on how they have talked about character creation, they keep on harping it is an RPG first. But until it is put out there for the public to see, it means nothing.
Anyway, I am tempted to leave these discussions alone, and play my favourite cyberpunk game that hasn't been mentioned yet Final Fantasy 7

I didn't mind the Voice Acting at all in the witcher games, but that's because Geralt is a character on its own which i feel it's what they're trying to do with V, honestly i'd rather they went the full character route if they're gonna voice him.
Who know perhaps they aren't gonna tone down the script just cause they have to record it, doubtful but not outright impossible, i don't want a repeat of fallout 4.

There really aren't very many good cyberpunk games. It's kind of a meme aesthetic. I'd give Bulk Slash, Rez/infinite, Snatcher (Saturn with translation), Ghost in the Shell (PS1), and maybe FF7 a try. Most of the games that fit the theme are autism-sims and definitely aren't about having good game play.

This thread is just making me want an rpg in Necromunda where you play as the Spyrers and fuck things up down in the Hive. I feel like that would be the perfect game. The management of having to climb the political ladder in the upper spires while having to run quests and whatnot in the lower Hive, while probably forming your own connections down there. Maybe could even run some quests out in the wastes. Of course you could even kill some cultists and demons for the emprah, as well as the genestealers.
That would probably be the best "futuristic city" setting available.

Cyberpunk is in the process of what happened to steampunk. Retards who don't understand anything beyond some minor details and the aesthetic latch on to it and bastardize it, until it reaches the point where the entire concept of "cyberpunk" is diluted to "have drug fueled orgies, dye your hair pink, and glue neon lights onto everything". What. That was one of the things that made it stand out. It was part of how a user plans their loadout, between armor, speed, gadgets and whether they'd be using their see-through sights. Shadowrun isn't an RPG.
It looks like an RPG, plays like an RPG but you can't actually roleplay.
Theres this sidequest in Shadowrun Dragonfall called 'False Flag' where you have to assist smuggling chemicals to a Anti-meta human organisation because a charitable troll wants to learn what they're up to.
So you go there and along the way you get the choice to eliminate the smugglers and take the loot to the Organization yourself and since the smugglers were meta-humans I felt it would seem like bad form for us to show up with them in tow so I killed them and brought the chemicals to the location and heres where the bullshit really begins:
So you enter the facility, you meet the head honcho, Volker Stahl, stereotypical nazi man and no matter how hard you try they will not let you be peaceful, they won't let you take the payment for the shipment yourself and fuck over the questgiver, you can't take the payment and then kill Volker Stahl and get a double reward, the game completely hard locks you into an anti-racist stance which is bullshit because a true RPG wouldn't deny you the right to be a pacifist, a con artist or a racist. A true RPG would let you make the wrong decisions and let you be consistent with the character you're ROLEPLAYING instead of being a preachy piece of shit.

"Soul" cyberpunk looks pretty fucking bland and boring. I hate cyberpunk anime and blade runner, they lack the upbeat tone I think a futuristic "punk-ish" society is supposed to have. Those are just the creators forcing their introvercy into the shit they made.
Soypunk 2077 in the other hand looks too colorful, I agree with that, it looks more like GTA V and it undermines the pessimistic and horror atmosphere which are a central theme in the cyberpunk genre. It's cyber and punk, but not really cyberpunk, more like watch dogs 2.
The perfect cyberpunk imagery only exists in 80's low budget movies. They technically aren't cyberpunk, but they reflect the 80s punk culture combined with futurism as envisioned by the people from those era, which when Neuromancer was written.

Gameplay-wise it's disappointing, honestly. I've always been annoyed when your interaction with the environment is effectively limited to "move forward," and Observer is no different in that regard.
I liked how they integrated that distortion effect as a way of telling your personal state, and while not totally novel it was implemented well. I also appreciated how over-filtered the scanners looked, but I wish they had been utilized more outside of a few important quest targets.
Aesthetic-wise I think it hit the nail on the head. Absolutely a good example of cyberpunk visually, and while the narrative felt kind of derivative, outside of some of the drawn out "stealth" sequences it flowed pretty well. it also definitely appeased my autism for good sound design
What I probably least liked is that the climax felt like a cop-out "ur fuked kido" ending. I get the whole vague non-resolution thing they did, but they didn't do it well at all IMO.

Going back and playing them now, they haven't aged well at all. The systems feel sloppy, chunky and imprecise - and they never had a chance to be refined. Great grand daddy was the likes of Philip K. Dick, who was writing cyberpunk before personal computing took off. He was also flying by the seat of his medication, or lack thereof.
The Ware trilogy kicked off before the Sprawl.
And that's not getting into how movies like Escape From New York, or Westworld were already laying down foundation work. One of which literally inspired Gibson. Referencing an Italian knockoff is fine.
Gibson even laments that when he saw Blade Runner, because it was the Sprawl put onto screen.
Gibson is not the great grand daddy of cyberpunk, he is just wrote the most distilled version of it, making him the poster boy. And whether it is Johnny, Neuromancer, or Mirrorshades, he is always one of the first authors people are introduced to in the genre.

Satellite Reign is the spiritual successor to the Syndicate games. Played better then going back to those games, but something was off with the setting, or design. I didn't stick with it long enough to really recommend it.

I see a lot of people who believe that Cyberpunk 2020 invented the setting.
But in the 1970s there were already writers who wrote about AI, hacking, internet and evil corporations. Cybernegro didn't invent cyberpunk just as Battletech didn't invent mecha.

A lot of people like Dragonfall. And some people like Hong Kong.
What it boils down to is that if it was the combat of Shadowrun Returns that you hated, you're not going to like any of the later games. They refine the combat and improve it slightly, but overall its the same thing. If what you hated was the characters, specific city setting, the lack of a permanent party, etc., then Dragonfall and Hong Kong will be worth a shot.

Cyberpunk is about answering one question:
"How would today's world react to X technology?"
That's why it's usually on the near future and not on the future future.
X could be basically anything:
On Ubik, X is the half-life, and the powers and anti-powers mojo.
On Minority Report, is the prestidigitation.
On Caves of Steel, is about humanoid Androids.
On Blade Runner, is about humanoid Androids.
On the Neuromancer, is the cyberspace.
On the Divine Invation, is about Jesus coming back on a corporate controlled world.
On Shadowrun, is all of that, plus Elfs, Orcs and magic started appearing also.
People associate cyberpunk with "it has to be night" because of Escape from NY and Blade Runner, but on the books that defined the genre never enforced. It's not really about the aesthetics.

I know, that's what I exactly meant. Cyberpunk is simply a pessimistic portrayal of the society's reaction to technological progress, and the people's reaction as portrayed by a cyberpunk story should be anti-authotarianism, or in other word punk. A good aesthetic is necessary to convey this combination of downbeat pessimism and upbeat anti-authotarianism, which why I think the currently popular neon lit aesthetics and slow paced cinematography don't really fit the idea of cyberpunk.

Hong Kong was just a shittier version of Dragonfall with minor improvements to the cybernetics and weapons.
The stories were less interesting, the antagonist was basically introduced right at the end. The level design was not as interesting, the side characters and the hub were retarded.
In comparison, Dragonfall was pro antifa yet was better in mostly every way.

The "punk" in cyberpunk is supposed to mean society is shit. High crime rates, extreme wealth inequality, low social cohesion - think early 80s London or New York, but with advanced tech and plutocracy. It is downbeat all the way through.

Satellite Reign unfortunately runs like total ass on most PCs because it's a halfassed game made by halfassed devs who used Unity. It also has an infuriating "everything respawns" mechanic so you fucking up a bank only for it to "respawn" a few hours later really puts you in a shit mood, although I guess that's what happens when you're on an "open world" kind of deal.

There's some dialogue choices early in the game where you can suggest that you were 'close' to the Decker girl that get's offed in the beginning - but it seems to serve no actual purpose other than to flesh out your character's background.
It's in the first bunch of conversations with Dietrich when you first get back to the hideout after the prologue.

Philip K. Dick in 1968 (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) He pretty much wrote about everything else too. He is considered to be one of the proto-cyberpunk writers, Robert A. Heinlein (The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress (1966)) is another. All the popular cyberpunk writers you hear about basically got their inspiration from them. Kikepedia is braindead retarded when it comes to establishing the origin of Cyberpunk as the Metropolis novel from 1925 predates its stated "origin point" by some 35 years. I would imagine there are works earlier than that which fit the Cyberpunk mold and most likely loosely describe the internet.

Play Deus Ex Invisible War, or at least watch a playthrough, the game itself is cumbersome to play even with patches and there are many issues with the game itself, but there's some Deus Ex hidden in there, great predictive concepts, fucking amazing one liners, enjoyable characters.
Play the original System Shock, it's great although somewhat cumbersome, I personally prefer it to System Shock 2, but I really want an engine port, the coming official remake looks like complete shit, It has the original designers but I'm legitimately confused, it doesn't even look like they understand their own game.
I Have No Mouth and I must scream is kind of Cyberpunk, it's a great game and among the best adventure games, the story is better than almost all games that journos jerk off for their stories these days and the VA and character of AM are top notch, AM's VA is the guy who wrote him and he perfectly understood and encapsulated AM in ever fibre of his being with that voice acting.
Syndicate is great, I haven't played it in years but I could easily recommend this shit, it's real time tactical Cyberpunk where you blow shit up.
Shadowrun Snes was pretty fun, I can recommend it but at the same time it's archaic and cumbersome at many points.
Bloodnet is Cyberpunk vampires, but it's so painful to play that I can't recommend it, it's great to watch or read about though, and it's painful that there was never a sequel that built off the setting/concept.
Perfect Dark is a great FPS in the style of now a long dead strain of FPS, The weapons are varied, the levels are varied and for the time the multiplayer was extremely varied, there's an emulator that allows you to play it running at 60fps with mouse aim, and it's great. The story falters at many points and the main character is a blatant mary sue.
Brigador looks great has a great setting and is cyberpunk with mechs, it's a great enjoyable game, but it's kind of difficult and unfortunately a lot of people give up quite early.
Shin Megami Tensei 2 is cyberpunk with digital demons, it has a great setting of Tokyo Millenium which is the thousand year kingdom of god with a cyberpunk setting, unfortunately it's only available through snes emulation in english, there was a vastly superior PSX version produced but it has no fan translation, real shame because the smooth transitions are a great addition.
I'm definitely missing a bunch but I'm just forgetting them, I kind of wish that Cyberpunk had more games though, and I'm dreading 2077 since I fear it will bring a new wave of shitty Cyberpunk, and honestly the game doesn't look good itself.

>Cyberpunk always had both pessimism and optimism. Cyberpunk that is unrelentingly dark is trying way too hard.
Agreed, and I would argue that overly dark cyberpunk isn't really cyberpunk at all, but something else. Cyberpunk is derivative of noir paperback novels from the 30's through the 50's. It's not supposed to be "dark" so much as it's supposed to be more down-to-earth than most other fiction. It's got a layer of grit and grime on it, but it's not inherently pessimistic - just realistic.
