The kind of people who would go to Reddit have always existed of course, in proportionally similar numbers. They attach to something thats popular, hive mind, and obsess over it, they've always existed the only difference is now the hordes can distill down into one place from all over the world. Now back before reddit was a factor there were still games marketed towards these people, not as many but some were still there. Now that it is of course most games market towards them.

These are the same people who latch onto fads and celebrity drama. However in the background still theres good game devs who don't give a fuck about all this, just like theres always been, maybe not growing at the same rate, but they are still there. Problem is they're being drowned out by metric fuckloads of shit and trash, as opposed to only the occasional spattering there used to be. So the actual good games are still being made, just not by the companies who need massive profits because they burn all their budget on art assets and marketing, which means they have a smaller presence.

I made the exact same experience with my Guild Wars 1 Guild. My friend who started all this found a GF over the game. They both were addicted to Fractals of the spergs. Later we have switched to LoL for a while which is also shit. She left my friend for a high level LoL player: Good on my friend. She lived in a cripple home due to some heart condition. She was extremely lazy, slept in all day and did nothing but playing MMOs. Later we three guys that were left tried to find shit we can play together. Turns out that finding something that we all three liked was extremely difficult. My friend's taste is not versatile enough to have room for games the baker also liked and weren't too taxing on him and his computer.
