not gonna talk about a specific time, im just gonna call it old games.

i mostly prefer them, i feel like they are more fun and have a lot less bullshit in them. most games nowadays are rather shitty, imo.

also helps that i dont care about graphics i guess.

what do u think?

7fac0e No.14998079

Old games are obsolete trash for losers who can't grow up. Now excuse me while I go play Fortnite and DmC.

c8094c No.14998121

I accidentally became a nostalgiafag. I used to get a lot of new games and they all sucked so now I don't bother anymore.

a7fe0f No.14998151

>>14998121

It's not even so much about replaying old games, also about playing old games you never played before. lots of good stuff out there for ppl who dont like the games nowadays as much.

I know a lot more good old games than good new ones, simple as that. I generally tend to make the separation of PS2 and up as new, and would have considered the PS1 generation as new five years ago.

That doesn't mean that there are less good new games, necessarily. It's just far simpler to find good old games. You could download a full pack of every single NES, SNES, Gameboy, GBA, Master System and Genesis game and most likely you could fit it on your PC with little issue (aside maybe GBA, those can go up a bit in size), and that's without mentioning 8 and 16-bit home computers, which are goldmines. You could easily pick up and try out twenty games a day, or at least ten if you're short on free time. Can't do that as easily with new games.

Look I'm not a nostalgiafag, I will play modern games if they're not absolute shit, but there's plenty of old games that are still great. I'm looking forward to Sekiro and Nioh 2, for example. Hell I might even give RDR2 a try if it's not garbage.

The PC library is basically a huge ocean you can disappear in.

>>14998057

Mostly I like older games more, for me the 90s and early 00s were the sweet spot. I still find new games from that era to play and they're almost always surprisingly good. That low fidelity 3D and high fidelity 2D were great.

d2f4f5 No.14998223

New games are safe and consistently below average. Old games where risky. They could either be god-tier or fucking terrible.

712111 No.14998227

I prefer 90s and early 00s games.

There depth was used instead of gimmicks like graphics and

>PRESS X FOR AWESOME

Every RPG had some kind of mechanic to separate it from others, games focused on variety of play, they had many factions if playing war games, or many races if playing an RPG.

The depth of old DOS games is insane but that was possible because they're mostly 2d, when things reach the realm of 3d you have pathing issues, ai issues, clipping issues, mesh issues.

Where in 2d you usually use sprites, asci, or graphics on a 2d field which still simplifies things.

I went back to playing Majesty and Morrowind recently and I'm gaining more enjoyment out of it compared to the many modern games I own or pirate.

What are games with good depth. I've been trying to play old games and keep bumping into ones that feel shallow or unfinished. Especially in RTS'

Starcraft

AoE 2

HoMM

Empire Earth

C&C

But Empire Earth is really fun as far as RTS goes, it starts from the age of cavemen and leads all the way up to scifi where your units become mechs.

You even have aircraft carriers which can make planes.

Drop nukes with bombers.

Use prophets to form volcanoes and earthquakes.

Also planes all have fuel so you have to plan out logistics are risk them dying from running out of fuel.

Also not a RTS but I encourage everyone to play the original X-com, as you get better at the game you find yourself getting more and more tactical with Swat like tactics being used through trial and error.

Open X-com greatly improves it and helps you understand the UI and mechanics much quicker.

Older games are dirt cheap and generally have a ton of content to enjoy. It also feels great to max out a vintage title on modern hardware.

This.

Running Morrowind in Open MW and I have around 7 cells rendered and running at 150-200 FPS.

Not that I prefer them it's just I don't see anything interesting nowadays. Lots of games look generic and bring nothing new to the table nor do they improve previous ideas in any meaningful way. Of all the games shown on this year's E3 I'm only curious about Death Stranding, DMC5 and Cyberpunk 2077 but even then I don't have a console and my PC is very weak so I will most likely not play them any time soon.

most [current year] game I found worth playing are Age of Decadence (finally a decent fallout-like game) and Age of Wonders 3 (comfy turn-based strategy from series I prefer to HOMAM)

On top of it, most of the modern games don't have any modding support and you can only play the main campaign so much before it gets boring.

my favorite current year games are still just advancements of series I already liked, mind you. Yakuza 0 and Bloodborne being the first that come to mind

Depends on how old, if it's atari-level / space invaders-tier games, they're fucking bad, yes they are very historical and did not reach prime time videogames in my opinion.

But that sweet spot of the SNES, mega drive is fantastic for 2d games and the shumps around were evolved in extreme ways.

Then the PS1 (not the n64, that fucking sucked except for f zero X) has some good 3d games, then the PS2, gamecube and even Xbox fucking blew my balls off but along the side of the handhelds also gave the the few last breath of good 2d games. Even pc games have also really great games coming out as well over the decades.

2bd844 No.14998494

I mostly play things that I couldn't play before emulation, and most (not all) new games don't really appeal to me so I don't feel like I'm missing out too much. I won't ever run out of good games that I haven't played even if I only play old games so whatever.

Fuck no, Atari-games are fucking good and fun. They might look simple but there's tons of enjoyment out of it and they are challenging. I mean you can still get people into gaming by letting them play breakout or Asteroids.

Some are bad and some are good. Like nowadays' games.

I enjoy most of my backlog even if I have to see old graphics (which I actually prefer more because it gives me nostalgia), but some people won't play anything that's older than 2010.

**I wanted a friend of mine to play the Yakuza games in release order before going for the latest ones, but he just can't bear PS2-3 graphic.

yakuza 3-5 on ps3 hold up very well though, Yakuza 1 is a bit muddy but i'd argue that yakuza 2 holds up pretty well too. your buddy is a fuckin' goofball

6741b4 No.14998609

All depends on the game. Some old games have aged like milk and I just can't find myself interested in them anymore because they just look so ugly and are empty as hell, some are literal immortal tier and never seem to stop being good. Most new games though are just boring

>Yakuza 1 is a bit muddy but i'd argue that yakuza 2 holds up pretty well too.

Yeah, to me Yakuza 1 felt like the first Hitman. A bit clunky, but with potential and both second games improved the gameplay.

830522 No.14998971

>>14998951

Yakuza 1 is still solid and the gameplay holds up, it's biggest weakness is probably the load times if you're playing on original hardware, in a weird way i'd still say one should play it before kiwami. Plus it was cool to play these games and feel how they evolve by going in release order

And this is why I suggested my friend to play them in release order.

I think that only by doing this one can enjoy these games to the fullest. At least that's in my experience.
