Every RPG had some kind of mechanic to separate it from others, games focused on variety of play, they had many factions if playing war games, or many races if playing an RPG.
The depth of old DOS games is insane but that was possible because they're mostly 2d, when things reach the realm of 3d you have pathing issues, ai issues, clipping issues, mesh issues.
Where in 2d you usually use sprites, asci, or graphics on a 2d field which still simplifies things.
I went back to playing Majesty and Morrowind recently and I'm gaining more enjoyment out of it compared to the many modern games I own or pirate.
