According to the latest Steam survey only 0.22% of all Steam users are on Windows XP. This is about the same number as the number of users for Linux Ubuntu 16.04, 17.10 and 18.04 added up.

Actually about that.

>Wine (originally an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator") is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, macOS, & BSD. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop.

Still good luck learning Linux and running it. It definitely will be pain in the ass but at least after EVE online learning curve you will actually get extremely good system.

Bruh, when it comes to software side of things then you have shit tons of programs that are respecting your freedoms. Maybe bother doing some research on your own. I will help you out a little bit, start using startpage.com and https://github.com/asciimoo/searx/wiki/Searx-instances . For shitposting purpose and other such things which in generally needs relative low amount of CPU/GPU processing power then you should look into investing into a 100% freedums respecting laptop as this is the closest thing you can have that can run both modern distribution (Based on Linux, Unix or BSD) and pajeet softwares. For anything games related you better own a separate computer instead that can run Windows 7, XP or 10 if it's really that necessary and you better pirate it bruh, it's not like microshit will lose 60 american freedoms dollar because you own a unauthorized copy of macroshit products from some "pirate" sites. You can safely ignore all the "hurr durr pirates are stealing muh shekels" whining as long you don't get any actual angry mail from your money sniffeling ISP. So if you decide to install 3 different OS on your games computer better reserve 1 hard drive with enough partition spess for OS related purpose only such as updates or additional library. Then reserve another hard drive for all your games, the advances of this? Makes shit easier to backup on wangblows. Once you got a laptop use that for documentation and low CPU programs only, no games at all you won't and don't need it for that, which also means you can safely choose any loonix/BSD/unix distribution of your choice. Linux also has the advance that blacking up shit is much easier. Once you have done that you have a relative safe gaming PC and another PC/Laptop for more discrete information.

TL;DR (for lazy niggers):

Search Engines:

Either startpage.com or https://github.com/asciimoo/searx/wiki/Searx-instances

100% freedums laptop:

Something about Lenuvo/Thinkpad (aka chinkpad), better ask the /tech/ board on their tech finance/support thread for more information, also ask them about librecore which will remove some botnets. I don't have enough information on my own to help you with that.

Protip:

You can use Libre Office or Word for copy&pasting xbox huge text, better get used to it.

be more specific. a lot of people throw this term around and have no idea what it means. if you mean all support, ever, to the point where win7 simply won't run anything modern, then you need to remember that XP came out seventeen years ago and is still functional, if not ideal for modern games (but who plays those)

if you mean official support -IE updates - then who cares; nobody with a brain has installed a single update for 7 in years since they announced their telemetry bullshit. there's a pirate "distro" i guess you'd call it of XP that runs about 10x better and has maybe a third the footprint of the "official" so I would assume 7 will eventually get the same treatment, and with Linux slowly gaining more popularity vis a vis Vulkan i wouldn't be surprised to see a gaymen competitor to windows before too long

Because being locked out of your Steam account simply for not using an OS that you didn't need is a horrible precedent whether it affected 2 or 2 million users.

There are also, at peak hours, nearly 15 million Steam users online. That means there are over 30,000 computers running Steam on XP at peak hours. This is not indicative of total users as it's only concurrent users. If every one of those users during peak hours played one game that had 0 players, that game would enter the top 20 actively played games on Steam (Killing Floor 2 is #11 with a peak of 28,755 peak players today). 30,000 sales can also be the complete difference in shutting down or succeeding when it comes to independent developers - a $15 game made by one person over the span of 6 years can live comfortably on 30,000 sales (aka Axiom Verge).

Valve is really fucking up by creating a user base that wanted to purchase games from them but instead have to pirate games that still run fine on their systems despite Steam refusing to. They simultaneously sent a message out to the world that they are not above doing this. People who use Steam with Linux are probably shitting their pants right now, and people using Windows 7 are put on notice, what with it declining rapidly over the past few months. Steam is losing user confidence and has become the "service problem".

>People who use Steam with Linux are probably shitting their pants right now

While it has certainly left me uneasy, the situation is not the same at all. XP is an ancient proprietary OS that's not getting any support at all since many years ago. It is likely some Chromium features have started not working on XP, and fixing this would involve navigating Chromium/Blink's byzantine gynormous code to patch it, something probably only Google knows how to do at this point, and probably maintain their own fork because it is unlikely Google would want to accept those patches upstream. This is just too much effort for what amounts an obsolete OS, and I would argue very few machines that still work nowadays and can be used for some basic gaming can not run Windows 7 at all. Chances are the people running XP right now also have another more powerful machine with Windows 7 or 10, and XP is just their secondary machine, and at worst they won't be able to play when someone else is using their real machine, or when they are away from it

So while it's not a good move, I can understand why they did it, and I can also understand it is unlikely they will drop support for GNU/Linux altogether (it is likely they will drop some Ubuntus when they go out of LTS), because Chromium supports it very well, and it is relatively easy to maintain stuff for a libre OS that's being actively (and even enthusiastically) developed.

you're thinking of the claim that 40% of machines running windows use xp still, and that's not home machines for the most part. it has to do with system critical machines that run proprietary software, much like milling machines that still run DOS.

There are some legitimate reasons to use Windows 10. It has better Multi-Monitor Support for example. You can alter the DPI settings separately for each monitor, which is great if your monitors have different resolutions. You don't really need to upgrade for a new CPU, though. Every new Intel CPU is technically compatible with Windows 7, some motherboard manufacturers however don't release any proper Chipset drivers for anything below Windows 10.
